Huh. I regularly do a similar half-salute thing as Maurice is doing in panel 1. Am I... am I gay now?

Marten's dad, I'm not sure. But someone who says "Charmed" and "darling" probably has or is faking an accent.

Aww I say "darling" all the time without an accent.

This is of absolutely no significance whatsoever, but I was just idly wondering how Maurice pronounces his name. To rhyme with "Morris", the way I've always heard it used in real life, or to rhyme with the French-style "more-REECE", like Barry Corbin's character in Northern Exposure (which always sounded weird to me)?

If the "Maurice Marcel" theory is correct, probably the latter.

I don't think you mean it rhymes with Morris.  I think you mean people pronounce it as if it were Morris.  I've actually never heard it pronounced that way, but then everyone I know who goes by Maurice is actually named Mauricio, so the "EES" thing may just be a carry-over from the Spanish pronunciation.

Ummm.. no.  In her business, you have GOT to be able remember names!

Shouting out the wrong one at an inappropriate (or even an appropriate) time could be costly!

Besides, you don't want to leave a paper trail!

...Or maybe his name is Maurice Marcel. =D

Oh.  My.  God.

I'd heard of Marcel irons (a type of curling iron) before (my wife was a hair stylist back when she could stand working with the public).  I did a little research, and found this;

"In 1890 two Frenchmen, Maurice Lentheric and Marcel Grateau, used hot-air drying and heated curling tongs to make deep, long-lasting Marcel waves."

Think he was named for two historical French hairdressers?

Think I'm reading too much into this?

Think I'd better get back to grading midterms...

Using a hand gestures does not make you gay.
Desiring sexual relations with members of your own gender makes you gay.

Yeah, but I'm British, so I've always heard it pronounced Morris. Which is why its pronunciation in Northern Exposure always jarred a little.

Sir Michael Caine's real name is Maurice Micklewhite. Not many people know that. Perhaps that should be the new character's name.

OK, small precaution here:
Zombiedude, I'm sure what Near Lurker just posted was about Katy Perry, and not about your mom.

I'm not certain this is really useful, but you never know, misunderstandings can start pretty fast.

Not meaning to sound abrasive, but that particular attempt at joking was a bit... flawed. This kind of joke can be too easily related to a category of discriminatory clichés that are better left to history. Yes, I know you didn't mean it that way, but you should try a less tired form of jokes. And I'm pretty sure ackronnick's answer was just a "take things at face value" kind of sarcasm, most likely meant to convey something along the line of what I just said.

Also, thank you Jeph for making Dora's hair black again!  The blond just looked unnatural to me.

Anyway, got to say, really liking the facial expressions in the last few comics. Looking great.

Oh, I get it now.  Your mom's confused... she did realize it was a girl singing, right?

I mean, not liking it just proves you're not a lesbian, right?  Right?

I think it's actually a sophisticated reversal of the whole "all boys prefer lesbian porn" trope: If your child doesn't like the idea of two girls kissing, he can't be into girls at all.
Or something.
That combined with abject failure to take into account personal musical taste (ie that her child might actually have some) would explain it also.
