Guest appearances
« on: 26 Nov 2010, 01:22 »

I've looked through the last 10 pages of threads (about a year and a half), and I couldn't find a thread dedicated to this topic - there were a few individual instances, but I thought there was a thread I could resurrect.  So maybe it's time to make one?

At any rate, check out what's selling at Shortpacked!

PC World gave those models a two-star rating - a "DO NOT BUY WILL CAUSE PHYSICAL DAMAGE" recommendation.

...And is that Jeph in the background of panel two?

Kinda short for Jeph, but it could be.  After all, Willis can only draw a certain number of people before he repeats himself...

Oh, there's MUCH more. Especially during the Speed Beer arc.

EDIT: Let's see if I can track these down...
  • 171 - Lil' Sis and Clango from Diesel Sweeties
  • 511 - Davin and PeeJee (or is that Nancy?) from Something Positive
  • 519 - Amy and Shelley from Scary Go Round
  • 653 - (Technically) McPedro from Girls With Slingshots (he's on Raven's t-shirt)
  • 855 - Eve from AppleGeeks
  • 1246 - SEVERAL "Cameos": Rich Stevens, Meredith Gran; Holly Laing (?), Jon Rosenberg (?); Wil Wheaton, Rene Engstrom, Jon Rosenberg
  • 1389 - The Speed Beer Arc: Jeph states he drew some of his friends in the background - including, once again, Wesley Crusher Wil Wheaton.
  • 1391 - MOAR CAMEOS!  Jamie and Hazel from Girls with Slingshots; Kimiko Ross from Dresden Kodak; Eve Ning from Octopus Pie; Anders von Silfersked (?) from Anders Loves Maria; Indie-rock Pete(?) from Diesel Sweeties; Jam (Angela) from Wasted Talents; Conrad and Ananth from Johnny Wander; there are at least two other characters that I can't quite ID.
  • 1550 - Amber O'Malley from Shortpacked! (Dave Willis did a "parallel strip" where Faye said her line in a different coffee shop)
(This list obviously does NOT include guest strips, by the way.)

Anyone who wants to help out with some of the others, feel free.

EDIT: I'm not entirely sure who Jeph was talking about in 1246. I still say the third panel looks more like Danielle and Randy...

Actually, I was thinking more the other way 'round, appearances by QC characters in other strips.

And I finally found the thread I meant to resurrect.  I don't think there's a way to merge the two, though.

Kim from Dresden Codak was also on IRC with Pintsize and his AnthroPC friends, than tweeted at Marten about it.  Later, she and Hanners had a lengthy Twitter exchange.

Just posting to point out that the Vertigo comic 'House of Mystery' has a back up feature this month (I picked mine up yesterday) in which the character is watching a building collapse from inside Coffee of Doom and Marten and Faye are in panel on the sidewalk.  Gene Ha must be a fan.

OK, this one's a stretch...

Shortpacked has been in a coffeehouse for the last three days.  Today, we see a bit more of it - the wall color, the plant by the door, the chalkboard...

They've been in CoD before, too!

There's a comic with Marten, Faye and Dora in Coffeeright Theft; I think it's a version of CoD myself.  There's a blackboard (even though unused), and the walls are the right colour.  And the line: "We pay extra to be hated"!

hmm, interesting. I didn't read Shortpacked back then (and still haven't gone back to read the archives). I suppose it's likely that it's a tribute to CoD, just kind of an alternate universe version.

Resurected (again).  (Re-resurrected?  For this thread, re-re-re-resurrected!)

Jeph did a Weregeek guest strip today.  He mentioned it in the newspost.

The guy far right in the last panel looks like Marten, but I'm pretty sure it's Jeph's take of one of Weregeek's protagonists.

It would be strange if what Nicki mentions in that strip actually happens.

"Yeah, I came up with a robot VR thing for seniors and adults to play with so they can feel young again."

"Where'd you come up with the idea?"

"Oh, an old copy of Questionable Content Volume 4."

I'm not sure if Overbeck was aware, but a technology like this already exists, though it's quite basic at this stage. It's known as beaming.

Ressurrection!

They're in the coffee shop again in today's Shortpacked.  Note especially the hair on the person behind the counter in the first panel, and the glasses behind the register.
