resomolutions for a brand new dovey
« on: 31 Dec 2010, 10:39 »

i know we all hate list threads around here and blah blee bloo blah blah but honestly, i really love both making resolutions for the new year and looking back on old resolutions to see how successful i was, and i think a bunch of you really like doing that too whether you want to admit it or not so here's the resolutions thread, and here's last year's thread for reference.

my resolutions for 2010 were:

get into graduate school beginning september 2010 and, subsequently, finally move out of parent's house for good
i did this! i'm in a great criminology program in vancouver and i absolutely never shut the fuck up about living in vancouver. life's good.
learn to use my new camera
i did this too but i haven't had a lot of time for photography since moving. oh well!
go to the united states next summer
yeah i went to chicago with some jerks
stay in shape
got real good at running, started going to the gym, got freakish she-hulk muscles
quit smoking for good
i did this too!
be less of a hypocrite and start recognizing and being okay with when i am wrong about something
no i still suck at this
get over social phobia and be more assertive and confident when dealing with people
this too
finish knitting all unfinished projects
oh my god with my schedule you got to be kidding
start drawing again
nope
learn to parallel park
i have no fucking clue how to do this
floss more often
absolutely not. man this list started out so well and then kind of took a turn for the worst all of a sudden! i guess 50% or so ain't too bad.

and resolutions for 2011:

get my GPA up to a 4.0 again
get a secure volunteer position in the city
save up enough money to move out of this apartment and into a newer, bigger, better apartment
save up enough money to also take another trip to america, hopefully san francisco
get my full driver's license
be nice to everyone, all the time, because no matter how easy it may be to pass judgment on someone there will eventually come a time when you will really appreciate them and be truly glad they are your friend
floss more often
run a half marathon
don't take up smoking again
start building a decent collection of "adult" clothes, aka anything but yet more fucking t-shirts
see the city and enjoy life more

now i want to hear yours! go go resolutions thread. let's go

Ooh - resolutions for a brand new decade. Let's be tragically optimistic and say by 2020 I will have:

A couple of little-me's scampering round the place. Maybe bolt onto that a patchy, ill-advised marriage of some sort.
A house with a fully paid off mortgage. Not a luxury mason, just a decent house somewhere pleasant.
A job that, whilst interesting, doesn't involve trapsing round the shit-holes of the world.
All my limbs still attached along with full use of my body and its senses.
Still look alright naked as, after all, I will be past my prime by the time I'm 34.
Get get my black belt one these sunny days.
Get into photography.

And, one that I always say but never do - learn to play the guitar.

With a bit of hard work and a bit of luck, none of that is asking too much, is it?

i think my only real 2010 resolution was to not blackout while drinking anymore, which i failed like 6 or 7 times

i think for 2011 my list is (so far):

- get a job
- get back in school
- get in shape
- drink responsibly
- be less of an emotionless husk of a human being

Get back into fighting shape
Finish Junior year at Texas State with good grades.
Move into an apartment
Find gainful employment
Work on my social issues.

If I accomplish these things, I will feel quite satisfied.

2010:

1) Get a job.
Kind of. I had consistent work for a couple of months, need to get something more long-term.
2) Write more, I waste a shitload of time online, I could be using hours of it each day writing with no real impact on my online interactions.
Took a creative writing class, wrote a short story and several poems. I don't write as much as I would like to, but it is an improvement
3) Write at least one song.
Nope.
4) Practice playing guitar with other people.
Some, though not as much as I want to.
5) Be an awesome older brother. My little brother is actually turning out to be pretty damn cool some of the time, I should return the favor.
Hit and miss

As before, a girlfriend would be nice, but I've got priorities and a somewhat realistic outlook on life.
Got this one.

2011:
Gain weight, at least to 180 pounds, hopefully more.
Write more
Write a song, practice with other musicians more regularly
Get a damn job
Finish my Associate's.

Making resolutions is always really depressing for me because I always let myself down. So um.

-Stay in School
-Stay just as compulsive with hair changes, but make increasingly better ones. Find favorite haircut
-Be happier.
-don't whine so much
-save more money so I can go traveling farther this summer
-get to the yukon
-continue to stay on top of updating my photoblog.
-Be Safer

Get into a shape other than pear and/or bouncy ball.

My resolution is to get a job before the end of Janurary and continually have a job until I move back to AZ, then when that happens, I want to have a job out here, and possibly my own apartment and a welsh corgi that I am going to name after one of the primarchs from 40K.

Welp, didn't move back to AZ, got a job in February, have a job still.
Do not have a corgi named Rogal Dorn, but I am working on that.

2010: I resolve to do my best to stay alive during 2010 and go back to school. That's all.
I'm still alive and I'm back in school, so yay!

For 2011:
- Try to keep doing as well in school as I did my first quarter back.
- Finish my grad application.
- Don't get fired from my job.
- Continue supporting myself.
- Work out more this year than I did last year.

Here were last year's resolutions!

-spend more time doing degree-related reading and less time doing internet-related reading
-learn to skate backwards well enough that I can play defence
-get a job at easter that is not in a supermarket, and save up some money from it
-cook proper meals to prevent repeat of fainting incident
-FIX A BOAT (ALSO IN ENGLAND)(IT'S THE SAME BOAT)

Well, I dropped out of uni. So that one didn't go very well.
I didn't learn to skate backwards well enough to play defence because I left the team, but I can skate backwards.
At Easter I worked for the college on the telephone campaign and earned lots of moneys (which I then spent)
I can cook, and have only fainted twice since.
Did not fix boat.

This year's resolutions:
-be the best goddamn au pair in the whole world
-learn French/Norwegian/Both
-go to at least two folk festivals
-go back to university
-finish knitting the jumper I started in like 2007
Logged
There's this really handy "other thing" I'm going to write as a footnote to my abstract that I can probably explore these issues in. I think I'll call it my "dissertation."

Last year was like this:

1. Get a job, you hippie. (Oh hey, I did! Worked at a new bookstore in town for like three months and got laid off because they weren't making any money. Thank god my volunteer soundman gig at the bar is turning into an actual thing, though it probably wouldn't hurt to also find a day gig.)
2. Start an actual band, with actual people in it. (This happened! We are still going strong! I am telling people how to play my songs! We are playing shows!)
3. Graduate and get my degree. (Yerp derp.)
4. Record other people's music for a try. (Sadly never got to do this, due to a dearth of like-minded musicians in town.)
5. Attend the 2nd Annual PRFBBQ in Chicago, Summer 2010. (GREATEST FUCKING WEEKEND OF MY LIFE)
6. Continue to get in shape. (Welp. I think I've gained back the weight I lost last year and then some. My fat ass needs to get back on the bike more often.)
7. Be more sociable, in general. (This year I actually felt like I had a large group of friends to hang out with rather than girlfriend + two or three people.)
8. Figure out what I'm going to do after college. (Move to Chicago God Damnit)

Here's the new shit.

1. Move to Chicago
2. Find more gainful employment so I can save up to move there (or just save up Like A Boss)
3. Lose some fucking weight again, fatty

In last year's thread I resolved:

I plan to finally get around to developing the iphone game I've been planning.

My current avatar came out of that effort. Unfortunately I kind of gave up on that project a couple months ago, but now I'm working on a new iphone game that I'm halfway finished with already. My plan is to release this new game in February, so I guess that's a resolution for 2011.

Also I really want to take another trip to London this summer, so I'll say that's my other resolution. Beyond that, I generally don't make resolutions; I have lots of future plans, but I change plans so often that I prefer to keep them to myself. live in the moment, go with the flow, etc etc

I suppose I could resolve to post less. Everybody breaks their New Year's resolutions right away, right?

I thought I had all my resolutions from last year covered, but it seems I didn't:

1. Be Happy
I am basing this off the fact that I have mostly happy memories of the last year, rather than sad memories, so I say tick this one off
2. Learn at least one new skill
I think I did this. I learned how to do counted cross stitch? I feel like I have learned new skills, but can't actually think of anything.
3. Draw more, and maybe try improving
I drew for a while, and tried new things with that so I think I started improving. Stopped again, though.
4. Make more things (that will tie in with 2)
I made some socks! And embroidery! And some deformed prototype toys before giving up on that! Hopefully if we move into a bigger place next year I will have more room to try crafty things.
5. Keep going to the gym
Ha. Ha Ha Ha.
6. Cook more
I kind of was a bit hit and miss with this. I cooked more than I did last year, but still ate a lot of take away food. Again, move to a bigger place and hopefully I will cook more.

2011
1. Be Happy Again
2. Buy Nicer Things
3. Water The Plants and Don't Let Them Die
4. Save Money Regularly (I have already been doing this, so it is more a reminder to keep it up)
5. Get You Goddamn Tattoo Already.

i didn't post in last year's thread and i have no idea what my resolutions were! i will assume that i succeeded fantastically.

for 2011 i would like to
a) save more money! i am incredibly lucky to have graduated from college, own my own car, and have a good-paying job with absolutely no debt. i'd like to keep things that way! financial security is a really big deal to me so i want to save as much as i can while i am still young and don't have anyone else to be responsible for financially.
b) maybe occasionally get off my fat ass and do something that could remotely be considered exercise! i work in an office/corporate-type job and i work a LOT of hours, so when i get home after working an 11-12 hour day all i want to do is watch netflix and go to bed. i am not really getting fat (yet) but i am certainly maintaining my flab.
c) stop wasting so much time on the internet. do things! play the piano that i got for free that's gathering dust in the living room! read the books that are stacked in towering piles that i haven't gotten around to yet! go outside!
d) visit friends who have moved far away. this is my first year out of college and it hasn't been as difficult as it's made out to be, but it's definitely an adjustment, having to get used to my friends living three states away instead of three minutes.

here's to a new decade!

(edit: dang it shut up NEW DECADE HOORAY)

Yay! Being on a forum makes last year's so much easier to remember. Man, I really dropped the chain this year, last year I did so well!

For 2010:
- Re-learn how to ride a bike without being terrified
Um, not really. I mean, I rode it to a place once, maybe twice, still terrified. I think it is because the bike is so old and broken.

- Continue fixing up my rusty ol' vintage bike so that it's awesome
Yeah I didn't do anything aside from put on a flowery seat cover. But I did buy a bike helmet!

- Be the best girlfriend I possibly can
I guess I have? I am still with the same guy, so.... win?

- Have some fantastic roadtrips and weekends away
I think we did this. We stayed in hotels three times so I guess that counts as an actual trip. One of those times we went there in a plane so it doesn't really count as a roadtrip.

- Do a lot of decorating and furniture/house restorations/awesomefying
Hm, I guess I did. I painted a few things and went to Ikea and moved into a sweet old house that I adored because it was falling apart and everyone in it was unimaginably awesome. But then The Shittest Thing In 2010 happened and the rest of us split up and Nick and I had to move to a house that I dislike.

- Have a nice 25th Birthday and an actual party where maybe people will come
Oh hey, I did this! It was fun, I think. People actually came, which is amazing.

- Make better friends of the people I already know and love
I guess I didn't work very hard on this. I am a hermit at heart and I have turned down so many invitations.

- Spend less money on junk, and consequently pay off my credit card debt and try to get some form of savings together
I didn't do this either because my laptops both died and I needed to take out a loan to buy a new computer. I have consolidated all my debt though and should have it paid off by 2013 at the latest.... eesh.

- Get another promotion
I can't remember if I did or not. I think I did? Was that in 2010? I think so. I'm now Production Coordinator rather than Production Assistant/Office Bitch (even though I am still really Office Bitch) and I make 5k a year more. Woo!

This year I also sacked up and spent a bunch of money on doctors and specialists and tests and stupid diets to sort of my health and stomach problems once and for all, after suffering for ten years on and off. After many months I am now pretty excellent and only need to take pro-biotic capsules every day or so, and have Vitamin B injections every month. I also haven't had a cold or virus or anything since I have been healthy, when previously I would catch something new every few weeks.

So anyway. I don't really know what to do this year. Maybe...

- Keep my job, that would be great (I have been slacking off)
- Move out with Max to a sweet sweet new place
- Either sack up and fix my bike properly or save up for a new one
- Keep growing my hair even though it shits me constantly, I really want to see how it looks long
- Learn to sew better, maybe make some clothes
- Stop buying so much crap and learn how to buy food properly. Buy from the greengrocer rather than the supermarket.
- Learning how to make more than like, 5 dishes would be helpful too. Also take lunch to work more often.
- Walk and cycle more places instead of carring or bussing. (This will depend on where we move though.)
- Make my blog decent, try to blog several times a week
- Maintain my weight since I'm actually putting it on now that I'm healthy
- Save. Some. Money. (This will never happen.)

Although I have not posted any New Year's Resolutions in this forum
before, they have tended to be the same every year:

Lose weight and eat healthier
Exercise more
Play the guitar more
Stop smoking.

Every year, I start out doing fairly well, but then things kind of
go to pot.  I lose weight, then gain it all back,
I start exercising, then it sort of slows down and stops,
I start playing the guitar more, and then sort of stop,
and I quit smoking, only to start up again (this happens several
time a year, most years).

However, this past year, due to some crappy blood test results, and
some snarky comments from my kindly old physician (actually she is my
kindly young physician - all old physicians my age have already retired)
I have been doing pretty well for the last six months; partly, I figure
this is due to eating healthier and partly due to exercising more
consistently.  I have lost a bunch of weight (and am keeping it off at
this point), I have been  exercising pretty regularly (stationary bicycle,
albeit with relatively low resistance), and I am playing the guitar more
regularly.  However, at this point in time, I am still smoking, although
I will probably quit again after the new year.

Good luck with your New Year's (and New Decade's) Resolutions.

Athbhliain faoi mhaise daoibh!

Ok so

Quote from: me last year
MMX:
- Keep this job, do it well, aim for it to turn into permanent position after the 6 mth contract finishes up.
- Finish writing something.  Anything.  A short story, complete game idea/dialogue, a song, whatever.  Just finish something!
- Try to learn how to not haemorrhage so much money all the got-dang time.
- Go to either Japan or the US with Han.  Maybe both if possible.

I failed pretty much everything bar #1, but that one is pretty important, I guess?

New ones:
- FINISH WRITING SOMETHING
- run more often, goal of being able to run solidly for half to a full hour (ie: run home directly from work)
- swear less

I really only have a couple of very general resolutions for the next year (get into a PhD program, eat/live/exercise healthier), but I like the idea of making a decade-long set of resolutions.  Ten years from today, I will be 30 years old, and by then I hope to:

- Get a doctorate
- Be close to getting tenure (or at least be in a secure academic job)
- Be published academically, and maybe poetry-wise, too
- Have and/or adopt kids
- Either be in a secure LTR or be married (either is cool)
- Have been back to Europe
- Purchase a house
- Not be fat... between the ages of 20 and 30, my dad gained like 100 lbs.  I do not want to do that.  So I resolve to maintain healthy habits.

Happy end of the old year, guys!

Continue to ignore resolutions - experience has shown that they generally turn out to be less important than what actually goes down in the year.  However, in spite of that:

  • Continue to not be dead.

And towards that aim:

  • Lose some more weight
  • Get better at eating healthily (in particular, resist drift back towards junk food)

my resolution is to go to the gym on a regular schedule and that's the only resolution i have. i figure if i start being physically active, my diet is honestly decent enough (read: soup-, salad-, vegetable- and sandwich-filled) that if i actually attempt to exercise away the calories i do eat in a week, my body will resolve itself down to a decent shape and weight. that's how it's always worked before. and i think part and parcel with that is my mental health improving, which will lead probably to better performance in class, etc. etc. etc. time to be a well rounded person, thanks 2011. thanks for nothing 2010

This is the first year I've done resolutions so I figured I'd stick to a fairly simple list:
1. Lose 5 lbs of fat
2. Work out 3x per week
3. Maintain my 4.0 at college
4. Get a girlfriend

And one for the decade ahead:
5. Buy a boat(live near place I can live in aforementioned boat)

last year my resolution went something like
Quote
Stop Drinking

I'm actually happy about how long I managed to not drink. I didn't have a booze between Jan and April, which I thought was pretty cool, I caved because well it was so much easier than not.

This year, I'm thinking my main new year's is going to be "eat meat only once a week". I don't want to be vegetarian, because I don't 100% believe in the vegetarian cause or whatever, but just because I think that's the healthier thing to do.

Also, I'm writing at 5 in the morning whilst drunk. I will come back to this message tomorrow.

HAPPY NEW YEAR ALL OF YOU!

Ten year goals:
Have a PHD

One year goals:
Move out
HD average
Sack up and get shit done

There is no good reason why any of this shouldn't come to pass. It's my responsibility to make this happen and it'll be my fault if I let myself down. Not recognising that has been why I've fucked up so much in the past.

oh my god i made resolutions for 2010 what have i done

anyway here they are

get into photography (maybe)
haha no
do better in school (my grades still blow)
work in progress, though my grades are getting better so HEY
form a NEW band, hopefully play a few shows and get a demo out
haha no though im gonna start trying to write solo ambient music whatever if i can get a delay pedal or a loop pedal. i dunno im working on this still :c
get at least a valid learners permit, hopefully my full license (i have never needed it and to this day i still do not need it)
so i totes got a permit but i still cant drive. my college frands are gonna teach me though i think so maybe i can do this!
become even more rad
i think i got more rad? do you guys think im rad?
continue getting better at cello
im better but i didnt make much progress this fall. gotta stop slackin aw man.
ask out the lady at the coffee shop
she totes has a boyfrand but we hang out now and are friends and whatever so ill settle for that.

so i guess 2010 went well. oh well, 2010 is fucking passe now. for 2011 i guess these are things that i want to do.

actually do this thing where i want to play solo ambient music and maybe form a band again! whoo!
continue this thing where i dont suck at school anymore
get a motherfucking job
then get a motherfucking apartment so i dont have to move home for the summer
be more adult and less shitty (more rad?)
i give up on girls (reverse logic)
actually finish the 5 or whatever books that i have started and then read more because reading is cool
get at least kind of in goddamn shape because goddamnit i am out of shape

so hopefully 2011 will be cool and turning 20 will be cool to. oh god that sounds old

Ok so I didn't make any resolutions last year so maybe I will try this year?

1) Get my driver's license. I only have 17 more hours to get on my learner's permit and if I don't get my licence by June I have to do another 100 hours so Fuck. That.
2) Lose some weight. Ideally I'd like to lose about 20kg but that probably isn't going to happen in a year unless I go vegan or something (not going to happen). Basically I'm just going to have to start eating healthier and actually exercising instead of, you know, not exercising. Might join a gym, who knows.
3) Get started on my sleeves.

1) Done!
2) I don't know if I've lost any weight but I certainly started going to the gym and working out regularly and have gotten much, much fitter and everyone says I've lost weight and am bulking up and whatever so that's cool? I'm putting this down as a half done because I certainly haven't lost 20kg.
3) Totally done! and getting the colour done in a month or so!!!

I fucking rule.

Ok so new New Year's Resolutions I guess.
1) Figure out what I want to do with my life and get started on doing it. It might be opening up that comic shop I've been talking about or going back to uni. Either way I'm sick of being completely at a loss of where my life is going at 24 years old.
2) Continue to lose weight and get fit or whatever.
3) Quit smoking.
4) Get my band's album recorded and released.
5) Learn Mandarin (again).

I usually don't do them, but what the hell, why not have a go. Just for the year though, no idea what I'll want by the end of a decade.

- by, say, September, actually goddamn finish the play I started in 2009, and apply to direct it in 2012, as well as doing some other fun writing
- go to sleep at earlier hours whenever I have to be at uni the next day, because uniformly staying up til 2am is a terrible idea for learning ability
- move out (this plan has nearly come to fruition already) and make enough money to live out of home without dying
- occasionally get some exercise
- maintain an HD average
- try really hard to relax and not feel obligated to keep my family happy all the time at the expense of my own happiness
- don't ignore most of my friends when drowning in work, and make time for some goddamn fun and laziness and silliness

I dind't have any resolutions for 2010, but it still turned out to be exceptionally great.

So my only resolution for 2011 is to keep up what I've been doing.

1. Read the books I have before buying new ones.
2. Get less lazy with studying etc.
3. Talk to somebody not from my family at least once a day.
4. Learn Japanese.
5. Brush my teeth more often.

1. Their number doubled. I guess. There's a second stack, at least.
2. haha
3. haha
4. kinda sorta slowly
5. YESSSSSS

For 2011:
1. Don't drop out of uni.
2. Talk to people.
3. Write something longer than half a word page.

Also I think this year I may actually try to turn a short story I wrote a few years ago into a comic. I've been meaning to do it for years, maybe now it's time to actually happen.

I didn't participate in last year's thread, I believe I was actually out of commission internet-wise at that point. That's okay though because I didn't make any resolutions. This year's:

- Treat people better
- Stop getting hung up on absolutely the wrong people
- Become a better musician (I work at this every single day)
- Actually write some full songs

Far too new to have posted in the last thread so no accounting to resolutions that I didn't really make.

But resolutions can be a good thing so here goes.

1) Train properly for Paris-Brest-Paris.
2) Make sure I eat properly on every singe long ride without exception.
3) Complete the Bryan Chapman Memorial ride, it will make PBP seem much easier.
4) Get down to a 25 minute 10 mile time trial (and here ends my cycling nonsense)
5) Expand my range of cooking, the current repetoire is getting a bit boring and all of this money spent on kitchen equipment needs to be for more than nothing.
6) Draw that bloody comic man or dear god I will make you suffer.
7) Change the world for the better, even if it's only a little but.

That ought to keep me busy for a moment.

Lose More weight
Turns out eating right and drinking water has been helping. I best keep it up

Get Better Grades
My grades are in a sad state, and soon I will need to change schools to further my degree. Better study more, slack off less, and knock the remaining classes out of the park

Be Productive with my Endeavors
I have a lot of ideas that I am leaving half finished.  I wanna work on these a lot more and try to finish a few of them, like making my comic, finishing some of my stories, and starting the band.

Save Money
I always seem to have a lack of money, I want to more to work towards moving out of my families house

Right well, I never do resolutions but I'm going to make some:

I'm going to move in with my girlfriend.
I'm going to get married (that may have to wait until 2012 thugh).
I'm going to do more solo theatrework.
I'm going to finish my novel.
I'm going to buy a new state of the art PC/Mac/laptop.
I'm going to take up meditation.
I'm going to take up learning French again, then once that's going alright will take up German again.

I'm sure there are loads others but I've been up since yesterday celebrating and have taken a shit load of drugs so there, yeah? Piss off. Also, the world's probably going to end next year so this is pointless. I've booked MY place on the boat to Africa, have you?

Tania, was looking up dermatillomania and was amazed as I seem to do all that stuff but have never had a name put to it. Didn't even know it was a thing.

it took me a very long time to understand it as a quite serious problem, and i think it takes a long time for other people with similar impulse control disorders too because everyone knows it's normal to absent mindedly pick at pimples or old scabs every so often, yet there's a massive difference between doing that and actually compulsively and constantly picking at your skin and doing permanent damage every single day, all the time, which is the boat i am in. apparently it's not all that uncommon among people with ocd. i don't know how i'm going to stop but i need to finally find a way to get this shit under control because being ashamed of your skin and your scars and the way you look all the time really sucks.

Goals for 2k10.
1. Climb V9. Should be feasible if I keep goin like I'm goin.

Kinda. One or two of the 8's I sent were FA'd as 9's and downgraded because my friend is a sandbagging douchebag

2. Have sex with at least 3, but no more than 8 different people I haven't fucked before.
Seven. I think. Swag me the fuck out.

3. There was something important that I was excited about doing when I showered this morning, but I no longer remember what it was.
Still don't remember what it was.

4. Have this year be at least 45% less complex than the last 2-3 have been.

Oh man 2010 was so much better than 207, 2008, and 2009. If things continue in this pattern 2011 should be a really good year for me.

Resolutions:

1. Don't do drugs.
2. Get back to V7/V8 fitness, this is fucked how weak I am and I think I finally healed from the injury.
3. Motivate my friends to print this little chapbook of our pomes from Greece.
4.Go to less parties.
5. Quality over quantity fucking this year. Ideally a combination of the two. I would like to be having really really good sex maybe 2-3 times a week minimum. Preferably with one person, but if I gotta stick my dick in 150 different girls in 2011 to make that work it is a sacrifice I am willing to make.
6. Regain the lost respect I used to have on this board.
7. Swag.

I was gonna just make a bunch of jokes here but today I will be serious on the internet.
