Let's get it out of the way: I suspect your horrid suspicion would involve Padma and Marten making teh kisses in front of Elliot.
Nope! Something even worse.
Butts?

Hanners did call it. And it'll come true!

I had something witty to say here, but I've got nothing.

Perhaps next time, Padma will not aim for the nose...

Well, that was dumb.

...Padma announcing she swings the other way?
She was certainly swinging, that's for sure.

A punch.

Gah, I'll leave it to the archive geeks. :)

Anyway, after I got over being startled, it was pretty funny.

For those confused about what is going on, remember the first time they met.

Also, is that at long last another glimpse of cross-neck guy in the second panel? Looks like it could be!

For comic #2043...

1. Aw, guess Elliot was not there to meet up for dancing :-( .

2. Is that supposed to be our yet unnamed "neck-scar dude" from The Secret Bakery next to Padma in panel #2?

3. Padma in panel #3 looks great art-wise.  And Padma also looks good with her longer hair-down.  Though I still favor the hair-up look.

4. @pwhodges...  I am pretty sure Faye's glasses are broken, looking at how the glasses' halves are angling outward like that upon impact.  Poor Faye, looks like she needs a new pair of glasses now.  Also traded in her drunk bubbles for dazed stars.  The look on her punched face made me laugh, though.

5. Perhaps I am overthinking (or more likely brain-numb thinking) this, but I think it is a pretty clever way to induce a change in Faye's look too, since we have been seeing lots of character looks' changes in recent.  Perhaps Faye will get a non-square glasses this time around...?

6. Hanners at the ready with pepper-spray also made me laugh.  And apparrently Jeph's favorite panel draw too.

7. I will never tire of Dune references in this web-comic.  Long live the Fighters!

8. Funny sign in the background.

NO

- Loitering
- Skateboarding
- Puking
- Peeing
- Fucking <= (aw, no "fun" in a public alley after dancing? disappointing)

- thanks!

9. @TheoGB...  The Faye & Padma fight-gag started back at Number 1857: An Auspicious Meeting, continued in Number 1928: Is that Krav Maga?, and now here in #2043.  The fight-gag between them is to show Faye & Padma's friendly rivalry (with leanings more towards the "friend" part) with each other, giving our southern punching belle someone to relate to easily by nature.

Archive Jockey, away!  *flies off leaving a rainbow flight exhaust trail*

I have only one criticism of Comic 2042 and I offer it somewhat hesitantly, because of Jeph's accounting of how it came to be, but here goes. A character secondary to that installment's events will pop on for one panel and vanish thereafter. Most of the time it's one of the AnPCs, who will deliver a line and vanish, even though the scene never shifts. This time it's Hanners. Her reax, even wordless, to whatever Faye's trying to do to Elliott would have added to this episode. Instead, it looks like she ran off; there are "camera" angles in 2042 which could have included her at least incidentally. As I said, I offer this criticism hesitantly because of Jeph's mentions on Twitter and Tumblr as to how 2042 almost didn't happen. I should also mention in fairness that I think Faye's antics in 2041, immediately preceding, are a good example of how to do what I'm talking about ... And Jeph handled it particularly well in one strip, post-"Dorapocalypse," in which the gang plus Veronica are walking along and encounter Sven. Hanners' background reax (and Tai's), though only incidental to the action, help make that strip.

EDIT: Then again, maybe we'll find out in 2043 that Hanners DID run off, still thinking Elliott is a knife killer or something. Or not. :?
I guess today's last panel has healed your soul. :)

Hm... first episode of Rorouni Kenshin comes to mind. With Kaoru pulling something very similar.

My thoughts:
Judging by the angle of the individual glasses in panel 4, those spectacles are definitely unusable for the remainder of the evening.

Padma is not only rude for punching Faye, she's also rude for not even saying hello before doing it. (I mean, come on!)

Hanner's expression in the last panel made my day. Immensely well done.

Padma = Elisa Maza?

Starting an evening on such an embarassing note doesn't necessarily ruin it. We might still get to see some dancing. Don't give up hope!

10. @Soulsynger...  Was not that fast, I had 4-ish "Warning - new replies" while writing my initial post  .

- #2043's Dune reference was Padma going, "Eeeeeee...Chah!"  This was the referencing the 1984 Dune movie where the Fremen warriors were using (movie) sonic-weapons instead of (novel's) crysknives to penetrate the personal force-fields of the Imperium's soldiers.

- Also, Elisa Maza of Disney's Gargoyles rocked.  /highfive Soulsynger

Well, Padma is rocking that dress and with the hair done but OW. I remembered their first meeting and sparring as soon as I saw the comic but still, full force punch to the face seems silly even if you're expecting to be blocked. Faye's glasses look very much broken, if her nose isn't too. Seems she's popper the drunk bubbles too.

That does look like Scarneck guy, maybe we'll find out his name.

Warning - while you were typing a new reply has been posted. You may wish to review your post.

Oh bugger... My theory: The stars above Faye's head are lighting up the whole area.

See pendrake's excellent post, especially the last paragraph, concerning the ongoing fight-gag between Faye and Padma.

Faye took a high-velocity fist to the nose. Said nose will at least be bloodied by that impact, and most likely broken. That'll mean a trip to the emergency room, and Faye's in no condition to go by herself. So ends Marten's evening.

Also there´s Jephs comment on Padmas Weirding Way (in capitals?^^)

Whoever came up with the stupid sound-modules... well, that´s been discussed ad nauseam.
Hand-to-hand combat with knives and moving faster than the enemy can see woulda been more fun imho :/

What did I tell you about not giving up hope? What part of keeping the faith doest thou not getteth? xD
(And I know, I know its unlikely ... still ... I went iceskating with a couple of friends once. My then girlfriend fell and cracked her chin on the ice. We had to call an ambulance. The two of us drove to the hospital, she got stitches. We went back to our friends after that and still had a fun night drinking and cracking wise about it. :-D)

Oh bugger... My theory: The stars above Faye's head are lighting up the whole area.
The physical repercussions of those stars actually being just that just made me giggle. Imagine three tiny balls of giant mass floating next to Faye's head... gruesome, I know, but still fun to imagine.

@Border Reiver - Jinkies!

I remembered the initial fight scene, but forgot only Angus was there, which explains why Marten was so shocked, he probably didn't know this was their thing.  Also, anyone think that Faye perhaps still could have countered if she hadn't just promised to abstain from violence?

I think Marten was surprised that a punch was thrown and it didn't land on him.

also...

I had this same experience in martial arts, I just made the assumption that a 350 pound man trying to do a jump kick would end with my sparring partner moving before I got there.... No such luck. Sadly the kick landed squarely on my 185 pound college roommate...

When my Uncle Ed was a kid, one of his buddies dared him to put hi finger on a rock and let him hit it with a hammer.

Ed put his finger on the rock, and his buddy hit it with a hammer.

The guy asked him why he didn't move it and Ed said "I didn't think you were really going to hit it! Why did you hit it!?!?"

His buddy said "I thought you were gonna move!!!!!"

Ed lived the rest of life with nine fingers and one stump.

Sure enough, Faye's shirt in panels 1 & 2 = #445863; In panel 4 = #007272.

Also, I'm definitely disappointed in the lack of Elliot today.  There's still a chance he was close enough to hear the ruckus and investigate, but I'm not getting my hopes up.  Oh well, hilarity did ensue, which is all I really expect at the end of the day.  Tomorrow should be interesting: any chance Hannelore will call Padma a butt?

YOU WERE SUPPOSED TO BLOCK IT!

That should be the mandatory replacement text when a spammer hits a post in this forum.  :-D

Heh! - I prefer that you don't see them at all.  As an indication of what it could be like, I'll mention that the blocking software used on this forum prevents a new spammer signing up about every 15 minutes.

Ouch! Poor Faye... And queue Marten feeling guilty that he told her she couldn't use any violence tonight.

Still, this gives them some time together while they wait at the hospital. Hopefully Marten will be able to get out of Faye why she was drinking (so early) in the first place.
I wonder if Padma will come along as well, because she feels/is guilty for hitting her...

As for the shirt-color and lighting change in the last panel, I say it's because Padma's sudden movement triggered a motion sensor, lighting up the whole corner.  :-)

Now see, Padma, this is why sparring belongs in the guan, dojo, gym etc., not the street. And in a nice dress too? Girl, you should know better.

zomg CALLED IT.  Sort of.

I'm looking forward to some Padma/Faye drunken boxing.

Only Faye was the drunken, Padma was the boxing.

good GRIEF can't Marten catch a break with a nice night dancing with a rather hot looking chick?  Sheesh...

It has been established that Padma suffers from incidences of heightened density. This has to be one of those where it just goes click:brain_offline.

I wonder why that is. She doesn't usually seem that socially awkward.

I'm sure he meant "Padma/drunken Faye boxing". :-D

Padma hit her so hard her shirt changed color.

...You know, I didn't even notice this until you mentioned it and I fired up WhatColor.

Sure enough, Faye's shirt in panels 1 & 2 = #445863; In panel 4 = #007272.

Hmm. The change may be due to the fact they are now in a relatively well lit area in comparison to the street scene of the first panel.
The change in Faye's shirt color may be due to the fact that light is coming in from a different angle, when she is lying in the ground.
Some tl;dr;

Edit: OTOH that would not explain the change in the color of the building walls from panel two to panel four.  :psyduck:

Wild Padma uses Mach Punch!! It's super effective!!

No, she's got to be Dark/Steel. Or maybe Dark/Fighting: either way, it would be awesome to see. :-D

Hmmm... If the's Dark, or even just part Dark, she'll be immune to Hannelore (who is clearly Psychic)...  :-D

I'm surprised no one has mentioned another reason why Padma shouldn't be fighting in that dress:  She might flash someone.  In the third panel it almost looks like she lept in the air to deliver her punch, which could have given Marten a glimpse of her panties.

Interesting to see Padma's clothes have a theme.  Her dress has a similar pattern to the one she was wearing when she first met Momo and invited Marten on the hike(starting at 2009), although in a different colour.

Let's not forget her signature move, Future Sight.  Also, even though I'm pretty sure that Hanners isn't part Fighting (I'm guessing Psychic/Ice myself), we do have evidence that suggests she knows at least one decent Fighting type move in order to trump Faye just in case she ever snaps and goes on a killing spree.

Was my first guess... but there already seems to be one source of light with distribution similar to that of your average motion sensor triggered door light... even in the panels preceeding the last one.

And also Padma's punch would've had to have triggered an entire array of lights (in a very wide circle around the gang) to bring forth that amount of lucidity...

I doubt he would be looking that way in any efficient angle to see anything even remotely worth seeing ... at that exact right moment.
Reflex dictates us to look at things moving toward us, he'd more likely be watching Padma's fist.

Why is everyone so obsessed with the character's pants/panties lately? :-D

The more I see of Elliot, the more I like him. Incoming fictional character rush! What can I say? I like big, awkward dudes.

And in a nice dress too? Girl, you should know better.

Really? She's seems to miss social cues quite often from what I've seen. At least where males are concerned.

I'm surprised how many people are saying it seems out of Padma's character. I mean, we don't really know much about her character yet.

I'm guessing you don't find Tai as adorable as I do, then?

Probably not. Haha.

Also, anyone think that Faye perhaps still could have countered if she hadn't just promised to abstain from violence?

That was my first thought, too. Even drunk, I would have figured Faye to be one to at least block. Or attempt to, at any rate.
