I recently saw a rusty delivery truck on the back of which the driver had etched "Trust Jesus." Only the t had become warn, leaving only the words "rust Jesus." I took a picture with my phone but it didn't come out well.

I don't understand that comics comic... at all. It seems like it is just thinly veiled sexism, the veil here being a self-observing gloss consisting of arch, snide comments over whose favourite character is best. The lady who runs Forbidden Planet in Bristol, and who is what can only be described as a giga-encyclopaedic font of comic book knowledge, is (strangely enough) a lady. I imagine she would have some very apt, curt words to insert here, but that is her remit, not mine.

My normally very ineloquent friend said today "Describing them (gamers) as female is defining the term gamer as solely masculine, a pretentious and incorrect term as there are many gamers that are already a female, or both." The same thing certainly applies to "geek girls". You can be a geek and a girl without the preface, games and geek culture are not solely masculine.

The issue is really the other way around. That sort of terminology implies that "girl" is a monoculture, and all girls are basically interchangeable.

Yeah, the gender and hostility angles make it come across as a bit awkward and weird even if that dark haired guy isn't necessarily intended to be sympathetic.

Anyway though, I did once have a conversation about Tony Stark is a few years ago when the movie was first announced that sorta reminded me of that comic, if only because it's always a touch jarring to remember what weird place in pop culture some super heroes have. Iron Man and Thor in particular are odd ones. To comic fans, they're straight up A-listers. To everyone else, they've been sort of an afterthought, even compared to otherwise comparably popular DC characters like the Flash and Green Lantern. After all they-- and hell, Aquaman-- at least had a stint on Super Friends and Justice League to get them some exposure. It makes talking to less involved fans kind of odd because it's possible to have a great deal of affection for quite a few characters without ever really having read any comics at all. That's not a bad thing, but it is kinda confusing at times.

Didn't Iron Man have his own cartoon show for a little while, in the same vein (and by the same company) as "Hulk" and "spiderman"?

Yes, you're thinking of the mid 90's Iron Man cartoon which is unsurprisingly awful. More recently there's the French Armoured Adventures series which is suprisingly good.

Let's be honest. If the idea ever struck him, I see no particular reason Tony Stark would not go "Fuck it. Blue hair today."

Marvel tried their hand at animation several times over the years, but it was pretty unusual for a show to make it beyond 20 episodes and they didn't really do a particularly good job of repackaging shows and keeping them on the air like DC did. They had their most success when packaging things around Spider-Man or the Fantastic Four but even there they had some missteps. For example, at one point in the '80s they ended up making a Fantastic Four season where they replaced the Human Torch with a robot named H.E.R.B.I.E. due to licensing reasons. Hilarity ensued. Really, until the X-men animated series hit in the '90s I'd say that Marvel didn't really have anything that could rightly be called an unqualified success.

By contrast, the Super Friends/Justice League brand slowly banged out 100 episodes (many of them an hour long) over a decade or so. Maybe it wasn't great stuff, but 10+ years of Saturday morning cartoons helped DC maintain brand recognition, if nothing else. That's why I have an uncle who used to make Apache Chief jokes but probably can't name a Marvel villain who isn't Magneto or the Green Goblin. Life is weird sometimes.

All I know is that without Bruce Timm and Paul Dini doing their thing on Batman and later a Superman series. I would know nothing about, and not care that I knew nothing about... DC characters.

their toons were amazing. I still watch them when I get the chance.

That's probably for the best. The Batman series was the best thing that happened to him in the '90s, and personally it's my favorite depiction of the character in general. The weirdly timeless '40s and noir inspired atmosphere was perfect because Bruce and the Joker are already silly enough ideas without putting stuff like this on the cover:

Bane looks so silly that a lot of people don't even immediately notice the dinosaur.

Don't read Knightfall, it's kind of stupid. Whereas they killed off Wonder Woman and Superman, the only bad thing that happened to Batman was that his spine got wrecked. Though I loved Jean Paul Valley's outfit, he was my favorite batman action figure when I was a wee tyke.
