I think I just broke my sewing machine. I was sewing (drunk) and I was doing kind of some heavy work, (6 layers of flannel) I probably should have loosened the tension some, but... I am drunk.  The motor stopped making the needle move and is making a whining noise when I push the peddle.  I cleaned out the bit by the bobbin which didn't help.  I'll look at it tomorrow when I am sober, but I am a bit worried.  It was a cheap machine and it is years old.

Hope you find out tomorrow it's just jammed or something. I'm not very responsible about a lot of things, house and yard work, diet, dental hygiene and other stuff, but I've followed a rule pretty closely not to use tools, work around electricity or do anything requiring some skill after even a glass of wine.

Why in God's name would you ever using a sewing machine while drunk?

I mean, obvious safety issues aside, who knows what mad contraptions you would construct...If it were me, I'd probably end up sewing a kevlar vest onto a baby's onesie or something...I don't even have kids.

...I don't even have a sewing machine...it's on my birthday wishlist, I hope the wife realizes my perpetual hints...

My good buddy from Iran wanted us to finish a quarter of whisky together. I got to one glass and a half and then I couldn't stomach it. I'm such a fucking amateur, huh? Meanwhile, he downed 6 glasses and I didn't even notice any intoxication. He's the scrawniest little pansy I've ever met but boy can he drink.  :psyduck:

I mean, I wasn't falling down drunk, just a little past buzzed.  I was making a skirt, and I had already done the math part so it was just sewing straight lines and installing a zipper. I confess it is far from the neatest sipper installation I have done, but I don't really care for this skirt.  I have used a sewing machine since I was very young so feeding fabric under a presser foot is muscle memory at this point. I am not sure how I could manage to hurt myself.  I don't think you could catch your finger under the needle unless you were trying.

Reply to ankhtahr, from the You better not be sober thread.

Quote
celticgeek: You like Laphroaig? Have you tried the Laphroaig Quarter Cask? I much prefer it over ordinary Laphroaig, the taste is even stronger, but not the taste of alcohol. I brought a bottle to a Whisky meeting at the 29C3, and there were many people who liked it most. Though I preferred the 14 years old Talisker Distillers Edition someone was kind enough to bring.

And what is not to like about mead?

I really like Laphroaig.  I normally drink their 10 year old, but I have had quarter cask, cask strength, and 15 year old.  And I liked them all.  I do buy the quarter cask and cask strength every so often.  They do taste better.
I have tried Talisker, and I should like it more, being a McLeod, and all, but I just prefer Laphroaig, even over the other Islay single malts I have tried.

There is nothing not to like about mead, except a batch my daughter made several years ago, which tasted JUST TERRIBLE!  (Don't tell her though, even if she thought it was pretty terrible, also.)

I don't drink much. Maybe a glass scotch every other week or something.

Also because my budget is rather limited I can't afford very good scotch. The Laphroaig Quarter Cask has grown my favourite due to that, as its Price/Value ratio is fantastic.

I'm not a beer fan anyway. The only beer I tolerate is "Flensburger Pilsener", or short "Flens". It's from a small town close to the Danish border, and my grandparents live there. The beer is quite nice I think.

Better a box of beer than a box of wine. :parrot:

I've been slowly tapping into my bottle of absinthe...it is DELICIOUS. It's labelled "Le Tourment Vert" which I assume is french for "The Green Torture". Heh.

Also, it's The Green Torment. According to google anyway.

Currently, a bunch of Flying Dog and Anchor beers, some Oersoep, De Molen, Fantôme and a few others. There's not much in my beer closet at the moment since Christmas and New Year's (and soon my birthday) have(/will) cut quite a hole in my collection.

I mean, weed is enjoyable enough but I don't want to smell that shit for the next week.
Not that I smoke much or even a little, since I don't smoke and can't roll cigarettes I really only smoke when someone else brings the stuff.

And also because it's expensive and I really don't like coffeeshops.

I find it rather putrid...but of course, my dog has tried on more than one occasion to eat a live skunk, and each time he gets an open mouthful of their spray. Imagine dog-breath mixed with essence of skunk...those would be effective smelling salts.

You can actually get a skunk as a pet, they remove the scent glands though. I'm told that they're like cats but not assholes.

pet skunks are actually really good animals! the problem is that there's no rabies vaccination for skunks developed yet, so in places where rabies vaccinations are mandatory (i.e. most places) it's illegal to own a pet that isn't vaccinated (not to mention wild animal laws)

some states will let you with a special permit, other states won't let you at all. if you do have one you have to be reallllly careful letting other people handle them, because if they get bit then the skunk gets put down to be checked for rabies.

not to say that they necessarily will - kind of like any other animal, they only bite if they're feeling threatened. you have to raise them from babies (and, yes, have their scent gland removed) and basically have them in pretty much constant contact with you at all times. i was really this one woman's story who said that she tucked her shirt into the waist of her pants and put the baby skunk down her shirt, and it would curl up and go to sleep against her stomach, which just oh my gosh just sounds like the most adorable thing ever, i mean look at this thing:

(confession: i really love skunks and they are above and beyond my favourite animal. mmhmm, yep, yep, yep.)

thread related: this pot i just got is fucking great and makes me feel like i'm on shrooms. also, i'm seeing my therapist in an hour so i shouldn't have smoked but oh well

Therapists are good people.
Well, mine is. Helps that he's only ~5.5 years older than me, specialized in autism spectrum disorders and a metalhead too.

Also drinking Weihenstephaner Korbinian. Delicious brew from a brewery that's been active without pause since 1040. Their almost 1 foot high glass is gorgeous too and makes you feel like you're drinking way more than the 0.5 liter of beer that it holds.

I don't think my therapist minds if I stare at his shoes instead of his face when we're discussing difficult topics. Or he's wise enough not to bother bringing it up anyway.
