So my feeling was right: She didn't die. Still, the whole thing is something of a stretch. Of course, I'm still anxious to see how it develops.

She's part cat. Always lands on her feet, more or less.

And wow, actual dialogue!

You were supposed to catch her guy. You aren't going to win the superheroine, ninja and/or robot girl by wincing.

Actually, you probably shouldn't catch robots, they're heavy.

If BlondeEngineer is a Robot/AI/Android... I'm curious to know if this is indeed the same 'World' as QC... and if there'll be any crossover plotlines/characters.

That said, the significant physical drama and absence of extensive dialogue (Four words in fifteen panels!!) leads me to believe we're not in Kansas... er... Northampton anymore.

Could be Kansas in another universe. Either the physical laws are different (cartoon physics?), or Alice is not human. But even if she is a milspec grade robot, that impact would cause damage.

I very much hope that the two comics don't cross over, simply because a crossover would potentially lead to canon confusion and also could dilute the feel of one or the other comic (at the moment, they feel quite different).

It's weird, but just in the few panels I've seen, I get a more 'early thirties professional' than a 'mid-twenties college town' feel from the characters.

Could be 'cause one of 'em is apparently playing engineer on a wind turbine, duh.

I think she's human (or at least humanoid), but has some degree of invulnerability.

However she did it, she's trying to hide it, given her 'fell not flew' statement. From that, I'm assuming that her 'fall' looked unnatural in someway to that guy. Anti-gravity coils, maybe? Hanners' robot sister/backup?

Why do you think she's trying to hide anything? If she can't fly, but is invulnerable (or at least considerably more durable than most), she's telling the truth.

Because the guy specifically stated 'fly'. He didn't say 'invulnerable' but 'fly'. That suggested that the alleged fall looked wrong somehow.

Right, and if she didn't fly but simply fell, then she wasn't hiding anything. If she knew she would be able to land, then she wouldn't fall like a fragile human would, but would adjust herself while falling to land on her feet. That being said...he wasn't looking while she fell, he was cringing and looking away.

I'm not sure that something supernatural is explicitly stated. If she knew that she was somehow invulnerable, or had the power of flight, why would she be wearing a harness in the first place? If she is of average height, then might we assume that she is falling less than 5 meters? Although we do not see the tree line, we immediately assume that the previous panel shows a perfectly orthographic view of the turbine. She might only be falling from the height of a medium height tree when her tether breaks. You can absolutely be unscathed when falling from those heights.

These are all valid points.

The harness thing can be hand-waved away as being 'keeping her cover'.

Commercial power-generation wind turbines are typically in the 300-foot height range but much smaller units exist and are in use, especially for one-building-only applications and the like. To be honest, that turbine didn't look much more than 10 meters (33 feet) at most. However, even that fall onto loose earth will leave Alice with an interesting selection of bruises and the possibility of long-bone compound fractures. I'd be shocked at her being able to stand up so quickly instead of just lying there, groaning in pain.

Another angle: Will we see a post-fall freak-out when Alice realises that, yes, she did just fall a considerable distance and isn't even slightly hurt? She wouldn't be the first character in the history of fiction who only learnt that they were special when dire circumstance brought their special talents out of subconscious inhibition.

I estimated the total height to 60 meters, and 30 meters from where the rope snapped, based on Alice's size compared to the turbine. Admittedly, the perspective makes this calculation imprecise, but it is a typical medium size wind turbine. Something supernatural is going on, or it might just be Arthur C. Clarke's 3rd law kicking in:
Quote
Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic.
If so, we might expect a very high-tech, futuristic setting for the comic. But QC is also in the same setting, so what is the difference? Perhaps Jeph just is into futuristic high-tech?

EDIT: Also, the two people we have seen so far, appear to be in their thirties. We might expect them to be married (not necessarily to each other), and with children. They are probably maintenance workers on the wind turbine, or perhaps saboteurs that (for some reason) do not like wind turbines. Typically, wind turbines are positioned on top of hills, distant from any habitation. I would guess they have a car somewhere, but why did they not drive all the way up to the turbine?

Okay - Scenario Building.

Alice and the as-yet-unnamed guy are power workers who were engaged in maintenance on one of the turbines. Their van/pick-up is parked out-of-sight (these sites can be huge and there might be a maintenance building somewhere where they left the vehicle before walking over to the turbine needing work). Alice's companion went into the woods to look for something - maybe a maintenance cover that either blew off in a storm (it happens) or was blown off by debris coming out when the turbine overheated and seized up due to extremely high revs (also happens). He comes back just in time to see Alice's harness cable snap.

Also, as long as we're in pure speculation land, the use of the sound effect WHUD suggests (to me, anyway) something that is very hard hitting something else that is very hard.  She may have almost flown, but she's made of sterner stuff than your average human.

WHUD is an appropriate sound for dropping a pork roast or flank steak onto the kitchen counter but then again it would not being going all that fast.
Maybe a WHUMP is a bit more meaty sound?

What would be the correct  onomatopoeia [pl] for a 68kg bag of mostly water hitting various solid and semi solid surfaces at speed?

Yeah, as silly as it sounds, WHUMP more sounds like a human hitting the ground, WHUD sounds like a more solid object.

I guess I'd have gone with SPLAT, but obviously she didn't go SPLAT.

Dear lord this may be the silliest conversation I've had all day.

I think more of a WHAP sound.  Kind of like the sound of a belly flop from the high dive but far more intense.

I aim to please but usually hit the funny bone instead
 [either annoy or tickle]

Yeah WHAP is a kind of wet yet dull slap, like a wet towel sound.

I take WHUD to be a portmanteau of WHAM and THUD.

Noononononono. Whud is the noise that giant hammer makes.

WHUD is the sound that Superman makes when he lands quickly without pulling up.
