Places that I've been to that offer wine wipe the rim with a cloth in between offering sips. I mean it's not really sanitizing but better than nothing. And it's never required so if you have some aversion to drinking after other people, have a cold or something you can always skip that part at take the wafer for communion. The idea is to make the ritual offering, not force people to bathe in germs.

The Orthodox churches use bread, not wafer, and dunk it in the wine so that you take both together rather more hygienically.

I'm Catholic. When I was young we went to my aunt's Episcopal church once.  It was pretty much the same deal with minor differences here and there like using actual bread instead of the wafer.  It always confused me, in my younger years, that there were different kinds of Christianity.  Its all dedicated to the same person/deity.  It wasn't until I learned about Martin Luther and the schisms in school that it came down to, essentially, different philosophies and politics.

My wife is eastern orthodox (yay 2 Christmases and new years and occasionally Easter!).  We went to midnight easter mass at a local orthodox church (I forget if it was serbian or croatian, but my wife was able to keep up with the words).  There was a lot more rules and procedures than I am used to.  I also found it strange that they dipped a cube of bread in wine and then put it on your tongue.  Not to say its bad, just different from the wafer I am used to.

I remember when we were going to start going to Catholic church, so we can be in good standing to have a priest marry us.  A couple of nights before going, I showed her the Dane Cook comedy central stand up about going to church.  To this day whenever we go to catholic mass and the priest starts with the peace lines we snicker and elbow each other.

I read all of DoA a while back so I could take part in this thread, then I tried reading the other stuff and got a couple years in and...just didn't really wanna read anymore. I still read DoA more or less every day (sometimes I forget and have to catch up but rarely more than a week, mostly because I'll see someone posted here and that reminds me).

I must admit I do question the (almost constant) recycling of stories and characters.
And what seems to be a need to utterly change what has become familiar.
(Case in point, "Shortpacked". I really liked Shortpacked, but then he went and changed the *main cast* while keeping the venue the same, and Supercar, and I must admit I wanted it to end.
The varying versions of It's Walky (or Joyce and Walky... (I don't even know if I've seen all of them due to the way they are presented online)) were alright, but just got a bit ridiculous.

He does seem to like sticking with a theme.

Hey, something has just occurred to me that might explain why Joyce is being so difficult at Jacob's church.

We know that Joyce has a very mild compulsive disorder. She doesn't like foods that contain mixtures of components that she can't easily separate into their constituent parts. She doesn't like them to the point where her family have known her to go without food rather than confront something like that.

Now, add on top of that the indoctrination she has had since childhood and just try to imagine how badly it would impact upon her being forced to confront forms of worship that are so different up close and personal, especially things that might also impinge on phobias she might have about germs and the like. It would be bad, I think. Maybe even meltdown bad.

It's just interesting that she can look past the hateful shit about LGBT people and come to her own conclusion, but that she's so stuck on grape juice.

She only confronted her feelings about LGBT people after Becky came out to her. Her life long friend and sister in everything but blood. And that wasn't exactly smooth and easy. But she has embraced it now. Joyce doesn't deal all that well with change in general. The way she was brought up prized doing things a certain way. She's being forced to deal with many of her preconceived notions being wrong. And in this case she's understood worship to be done a certain way and embraces that entirely. She genuinely enjoys going to church and participating in services as we've seen time and again. And now here's Jacob, a man she admires and maybe even likes and he's doing it all wrong in her eyes. Just one more case of 'everything I'd understood up till now is being challenged'. And she's not really been able to take the time to process all the changes in between, so yeah.. She's more than a little freaked out.

I'm thinking that Leslie is going to have the shock of her life: Maybe Anna is going to tell her that she was originally thinking of having a random night of meaningless sex with her before tossing her out in the morning like yesterday's garbage. However, after upsetting Mindy as badly as she did, she just want her to go and not bother her. She has some standards and someone who makes Mindy cry falls below them!

Oddly enough, if there were ever two characters in Dumbing of Age who could beneficially go on a journey of self-improvement together, I think it would be Joe and Sarah. Sarah is better at empathising than Joe but Joe is the sort of guy who would probably help her not always look for the bad in everyone and everything around her.

Well, Jacob and Joyce are being very flirty in today's strip (10/31), aren't they?

At the risk of jumping the gun so high that I land on the Moon, I can't help but wonder how Carol Brown might react to Joyce having a black, Episcopalian boyfriend? I mean, which one would she be most offended by?

I, for one, never imagined that I'd be shipping Jacob with Joyce as strongly as I am after 11/19's strip. There are huge issues standing in the way of course, most of them under the heading of 'Raidah' and I don't think that they can be trivialised. Not least of the reasons is that, whilst I can see Joyce shoving Jacob towards Sarah, I can't see her having the mindset to think "I am better for Jacob than Raidah" and then actively seeking to subvert the relationship.

That said, I do like Becky in today's strip. She's over the 'Joyce' hump in many ways, seeing that Joyce's 'type', gender issues aside, is a very different person from her. She still feels the ache but she's more focussed on her shock at just what is Joyce's type. Maybe she's wondering if she really understood her sister's romatic preferences at all!

I love 11/23's strip for two distinct reasons: Firstly, it reminds us just how screwed up are Joe's self-esteem and his perception of what 'healthy' relationships with women are supposed to be like. Secondly because I find the prospect of Joyce spending a morning window-shopping in the Boy Mall funny for some reason. :-D

I wonder she'll subconsciously put on a show of her own? After all, she is down there for a date with a treadmill!

What will be interesting is if she starts 'subconsciously' flirting with Jacob again...

One would imagine that Joe will SO call her on it!
THAT will be fun...

I'm expecting Joyce to get extra jumpy around Jacob and maybe Joe, now that a part of her mind seems to have recognised that:
  • She's a hetrosexual woman;
  • There is a part of her that is very, very interested in well-constructed male bodies.
Something tells me that Sarah is going to have to deal with being a mentor for a girl going through the mental end of puberty for the next while!

Now... as you all probably already know...
I *hate* shipping (I even dislike the term...)

But if I were forced to choose... of the two of them...?
Joyce and Joe would be a better fit.
I don't see much growth in Joyce/Jacob, other than Joyce (Eek!) learning a different way to church.
(Or Jacob vice versa)

Whereas Joe /Joyce would have FAR more scope for lots of character development and a ton more comedic possibilities.

And, you know, s'still a comic!

(Unless, of course, Willis is going all out with the Drama Tag in the near future...?)

So wait, what is Sarah trying to do?

I'm glad someone else picked up on that...
The way Joe says he "...know what (Sarah is) REALLY trying to do..."

I think it's gotten to the point where even Sarah doesn't know her own motives anymore.

It seems to me that all she is trying to do (ultimately) is HURT Raidah.
The debate as to whether she is being equally as manipulative/terrible as the person she claims to be *saving* Jacob from is doubtless a big discussion one could have.

But I think today's strip is one of the best DoAs I've seen for a while...
(And I get SICK to DEATH of all the Joe hating that goes on in their forum)

She's trying to hook up Jacob with Joyce.

A dangerously simple answer that fails to fully communicate several layers of motive, self-deceit and manipulation. One of the things that I suspect that we will learn from this scene is whether that is the entirety of Sarah's motivations or if she's using Joyce to hurt Raidah and trying to excuse herself by telling herself: "Hey, Joyce will get a great BF out of this so it isn't as if I'm hurting her by doing this!"

I think... for once... I'm kinda justified in claiming this as "called it!"
