I'd probably listen to The All-American Rejects - The Last Song, just to listen to something with a quite litteral title :) Although it's really a hard question to answer, as there are far better songs in this world, but maybe not fitting for such a situation? Indeed, a thought of the day.

And hooray, first post.

You'd go out to a crappy Metallica song that's only real claim to fame is being the inspiration for the shut-down of Napster? Damn. This kid needs a Leonard Cohen injection, stat.

I have no idea what I'd choose. The only thing that comes to mind is Johnny Cash's cover of The Mercy Seat.

Today i listened to the chacarron song for the first time, I want to use that. I'm pretty certain that even if the gunman managed to keep his aim despite being convulsing due to laughter, i'd be laughing my ass of so hard that i would not mind being shot.

"My Way" could be a good goodbye song...But it must be the Frank Sinatra Version, not that hedious cover Sid Vicious recorded or the just as awful version made by Robbie "i-need-to-cram-my-videos-full-of-hot-ladies-to-reaffim-my-masculinity" Williams

The Horn Intro from Good News for People Who Love Bad News, 'cause it's like 9 seconds long. Why would you want to hear a song that's six minutes long? Wouldn't that just give you time to do nothing but contemplate the fact that you're going to die?

At least with a short song, you don't have to worry for long.

That, or something by 50cent... because then a bullet in the brain would be a sweet relief

Actually, I'd probably pick some song I know the words to and I know I don't have the vocal ability to sing right.

Hahaha... that's actually a pretty good one, there.

I retract my earlier statement, in light of the idea of torturing the person who's going to shoot you. I'd sing "Heat of the moment" by Asia, in the voice of Cartman from southpark (complete with handclaps ? la Kenny Dies episode)

It's a tough choice.

But I think that if I were ever placed in this situation, I'd realistically choose something joyful, long, and epic, and the very first thing that came to mind is:

Tchaikovsky's Opus 23, "Piano Concerto #1 in B flat minor"

Not only because the peice is about a half hour long, but becuase it's just so beautiful and spiritually uplifting. I truly think I'd die a happy man if this was the last thing I heard. The guy can blow my brains out right at the end of the flourish at "Allegro with Fire", in time with the music ;-).

BTW, don't get the impression that I listen to a lot of classical music, or any for that matter. In fact, I had to grab my CD and research Wikipedia to find out what the full title of these ogg vorbis rips I've been listeneing to all these years was ;-).

I guess in answer to my own question, I would say "Aqueous Transmission" by Incubus.

If you know the song, you know that it's about seven minutes long, but the last minute or so is just cricket noises and water sounds. Right? So, the guy keeps sitting up and clearing his throat thinking the song is over, but I'm all like:

"Oh, no, man ... deal is a deal, I wanna hear those crickets!"

Hell yeah.

Now I would say a song that is obscenely long, such as Third Eye (By Tool, at over 13 minutes) but honestly, I wouldn't want to sit there for that long in agony.

So I will say "With A Thousand Words To Say But One" (Darkest Hour) just out of the shear irony.
The last lines are:  "And walking through the rain
We'll see the beauty in life again."

No, really, I think I'd go with Sweet Avenue by Damien Rice. I haven't heard much else by the guy, the song isn't the best song evar OMG, and I don't even know how I got it, but I like it a lot. Seems like it would be a decent note to go out on, just feeling contented-like and happy.

Dude that is a song by jets to brazil. Someone spread it round on download as damien rice.

The lyrics go:
Tasting you and rain I walk down to the train...

That's actually a fucking brilliant song, and would be my choice.

Yeah I wouldn't really care about making some sort of final statement with a song, I'd pick a song that just has enough closure for me. Depending on my mood, I'd either pick

Joy Division - Disorder

or

Stereolab - Wow and Flutter

I'd probably want some Hymn to play.  Not really sure which, but definately church music.  It's just the only thing I could imagine listening to before taking a bullet to the brain.

thats very boondock saints of you, and i think appropriate... however, my choice would be jukebox hero by foreigner... i can listen to that 100 million times and never get sick of it

"London Bridge" by Fergie
I figure after listenin' to this a bullet to the brain and an eternity of damnation won't be as bad

but seriously "A Love Supreme parts I-IV" by John Coltrane not just because it's really long, but its possibly the most emotion that anyone has ever been able to express with a musical instrument.

Wow what a question!  I like the idea of Sally MacLennane - now that's a track to play at a club by the way, one of the DJs at my union has a habit of throwing Pogues tracks in and it works brilliantly.

But back on topic - if I was going to die, and could only listen to one song, my mind would go blank.  I think, and I hate to copy, it would be 'Fairytale of New York' by the Pogue and Kirsy McColl because it's just such an amazing song, and it has so many good memories for me.

Very good question...

I'd probably have to go with something like "Scream" or "Asleep for Days" by Seven Nations. Make it hard for the guy to find it, therefore can go sneakysneak away and get off scot free.
Maybe "The River" by Tapping the Vein, or the remake of "Little Sister" by Carfax Abbey. Get with the dark vibe, and all.

wow...i can just imagine some one getting asked that in a club getting a very strange expression on their face and walking away very quickly

i can think of four options here
1. i'm going to die in that case i should listen to my favorite song of all time in which case i would request
you sound like louis burdett - the whitlams
2. i don't want to die let's draw this out as long as possible
Dopesmoker - sleep (total time 1 hour and 4 minutes)
3. lets get this over with
You Suffer - napalm death listed in the guiness book of records as the shortest track of all time total time 1.316 seconds
4. try and send them a message
um theressa give me that knife - nomeansno, disarm - smashing pumpkins you get the idea

If classical music really is an option, then I'd probably opt for some Mahler (maybe his 2. Symphony labelled "Resurrection" - definitely NOT just because of this tag). But since each symphony usually consists of several movements, maybe this doesn't qualify as "last piece of music you'll ever hear". If so, then I'ld choose "Neptune" (i.e. the final movement of Holst's "The Planets") - it would feel like being -? already in advance - carried away to heavens (or whatever aetheric elysium one might imagine when listening to this women choire in the endsection).

Classical tunes aside it's even harder to make a decision. To choose one of my all-time favourites would make me sad, since I'd know that I would listen to it for the very last time. But finally I came up with "Blow out" by Radiohead - yep, sounds like another pun, but actually I only remembered the title when I just read it on the CD-Cover - the climax of that final guitar-riff, I think, makes for an excellent moment to pass out and away.

Other than the stuff suggested, I might go with "The Funeral", by Band of Horses. That is a song that might make me a little more comfortable before going down. "At any occasion, I am ready for the funeral." Mogwai would be close behind. I've always been a fan of "Hunted by a Freak".

the happy happy joy joy song as performed by Ren and Stimpy, I don't see how anyone could possibly take themselves seriously enough to kill anyone after hearing it? :-D

failing that, for my own benefit, King Crimson, maybe Lark's Tongues in Aspic, maybe some Opeth.
