Iggy "you think can do better?"
Crowd "Hell yeh!"
Iggy "then get the fuck up here then"

i'd say it is supposed to be music on an independent label that is popular.

these days it seems to mean 'music that is influenced by/ similar to music on an independent label that is popular/ has blatent hooks and melody etc'.
in other news, music categorisation continues to be stupid.

I think thats actually what it originally meant. Its "in a perfect world, this would be a hit". Sometimes it is- Aussie Augie March has a top 10 hit here now, but usually that dosen't happen. There's also a guy named Bob Evans, who's really the dude from Jebediah. he's got a Top 10 hit with something that sounds like it was written by Burt Bacharach
For me its music that pretends pop songs are still written like they were in the 60s, with a sweet melody and hooks and lyrics... not so much electronic production or booty shaking, though you can get a bit of that.
Lyrics tend to be either clever or really cute... sometimes sarcastic, often 'aggressivly innocent'- like I said to dad, i don't need Soul. i need Scottish people writing songs about reading books. its an escape

er.. fan wankishness aside, it can simply mean "music that would have sold a million copies in 1960, but is now indie". thats why i include bands like Fountains of Wayne

Punk is defined by ethos and intent.

We've been over what I've said before as well: that comparing the Sex Pistols (formed as something like a performance art project) with the Monkees (formed for a package TV series/merchandising deal) is completely ridiculous; that the cultural impact of the Sex Pistols, in as far as actually getting punk out there, making the entire British establishment shit their pants and having a life performance that pretty much led to the formation of bands including Joy Division and Siouxsie and the Banshees, and in completely overturning notions of what could actually make it as a '#1' record, did far more for cultural life and for music in general than ten perhaps more proficient and prolific lesser known artists. Also, that Anarchy in the UK, God Save the Queen, (I'm Not Your) Stepping Stone, are great songs. Despite their morals, intentions, whatever, The Sex Pistols accomplished more than any other punk band in history.

I will also point out now that Jawbreaker are bland rock that does not deserve a place in a thread about punk.

So is this genre defined as music made by iggys that is popular, or is it music made by iggys that has 'pop sensibilities'?

The Sex Pistols were a band of Hairdressers.
Their music was inconsequential in every sense of the word.

Now Johnny Ramone, he was more worthy of our attention. He was much more politically minded.

Since it's been a while since Jeph's post is it alright if I semi-hijack the thread and ask for BM reccomendations for those who hate fidelity/structure/melody/music?

Misanthropy, Belketre, Vargshelske, Enbilulugugal, Crossodomiser, Sarnath, Cumming Jehovah, Schizoid, Abyss Angel, Wolfsburg, ...Aaaarrghh..., Chainsaw Gutsfuck, Graven, Profanatica, Gosforth, Total Genocide, Varnacht, Woods of Fallen, Ixtab

Some at least should suit.

Much like the Stones vs. Beatles arguments, the Clash vs. Sex Pistols is something few people seem to be able to refrain from picking sides. I am a Clash man myself and think Johnny Rotten is a complete and utter ass.

Now there is officially no shortage of threads in which I can recommend the purchase of Please Kill Me: An Oral History Of Punk by Legs McNeil and someone else. Full of great stories about Iggy, and really about punk in general. It's great. Read it. Seriously. Dammit.

Anyways, I recommend his stupendous collaboration with Sum 41, "Little Know-It-All"!

Come on...an obvious one.  The Misfits.  Oldies but goodies.  I mean, punk music with the most unpunk lyrics...that, my good sirs and ma'ams, is punk.
By the way, I mean Misfits '77-'83.  Not the new crappy incarnation, '95 - now.

But Joy Division were literally formed because of the members attending a Sex Pistols concert. As were goodness knows how many other bands: people saw the Sex Pistols, they started bands.

Yeah... sometimes bands do break. Augie March are probably the biggest example around here- literate lyrics that'd make Colin Meloy blush, melencholy melodies, playing tiny clubs for 4 nights in a row... and then 'One Crowded Hour' drops and they're featured in every TV ad everywhere. And I met a gal from Glasgow who reckons Stuart Murdoch is a celebrity and acts like it.

Its still indie pop if it gets big, since its in the aesthetic, I think.  Belle & Sebastian and Fountains of Wayne have had hits, but if you say 'recomend me some indie pop' i'll still be okay with them, 'cause alot of their  albums weren't hits and they had hits with literate songwriting craft

to be fair that's not all he listens too.

i'd be prepared to bet kharbevnor listens to a much broader range of music than 95% of this forum.

I never said it was all he listens to.  But black metal is, at best, a novelty, much like much gangsta rap.

@kharbevnor- Jawbreaker is not bland.  I don't know what makes you say that.  Oh, and Joy Division is not better than Nirvana.  Yeah, I know that's from an old thread, but I can't believe you think that.  Nothing against you personally, of course.  I'm not aiming to start a flame war.

the difference being that black metal started in the early 80's and is still going (i'm referenceing lyrical theme's rather than sound at the momnet ie. venom, mercyful fate and the like)

Grunge is, at best, a novelty, much like the hair metal it replaced.

Only with less musicianship and cocaine and more heroin and plaid.

As to Jawbreaker: all I have to go by is a song from the forced listening thread, and what I could find on youtube. Their one video 'Fireman' is just about tolerable until the soul-less singing kicks in alongside the most mind-numbingly generic 90's pop-punk riff I've ever heard outside of Green Day. The live stuff is better, if only because they seem to possibly have a different singer, or at least their singer has smoked about ten kilos of hash before the show, judging by his more gravelly voice. Still, it's nothing that I haven't heard about a hundred times before. I think this band must be something like Deftones: one arbitrary band from a completely worthless form of music that everyone has decided to love.

As for Nirvana: Kurt Cobain would have agreed with me. Hell, Kurt Cobain would have agreed The Field Mice were better than Nirvana. There is nothing special about Nirvana. They wrote some pretty good grunge songs, some stuff thats just objectively not bad, then Kurt gave his shotgun a blowjob. Nada.  Though, I can't trash Nirvanas legacy completely: if not for them, fifteen year old stoners world wide would ALL wear that one Led Zeppelin shirt, instead of half of them wearing that one Nirvana shirt instead.

Also, I'm going to seriously question the purpose in criticising me for listening to black metal (a genre I would be surprised if you knew jack shit about), if you equate it to gangster rap and then say yourself that you listen to gangster rap

I'm an acquaintence with the guy behind Enbilulugugal and Chernobog, he has issues and far too much time on his hands. He sent me a demo tape of Enbilulugugal once back in '98 and it was limited too like 13 copies and he numbered them in blood.

Actually, the reason his voice is softer on "Fireman" is because just prior to recording the album it's on (Dear You) he'd had throat surgery (his second or third, actually) because he'd fucked up his throat to the point where there were polyps on his vocal cords, and thus he had to take it easy.  If you were to hear a live version of that song, from after his throat healed, he'd probably be singing it all loud and gravelly like usual.

I never said it was all he listens to.  But black metal is, at best, a novelty, much like much gangsta rap.

If you wanted to make me bang my head against the keyboard you have suceeded, congrats...

I'm not even going to atempt a reply to this as I assume it was some pathetic attempt at instigating a flame war.
