Gauss rifle? HELL YES! All the cool toys and all the cool places are great. My favorite part of the game is exploring new places, and man, fallout 2 has so much more to see and do in it. I highly recommend you try and get past those first few hours.

Amen.

I'm notorious for not completing open ended games. Morrowind and Oblivion are 2 games that I can't finish due to my character creation fetish. Well, that and there's technically no finish to them. Fallout 2 I have beaten dozens of times, and every character build is great. There really is nothing like beating the last area without firing a single round. Or having a highly intelligent conversation to another character that also has an intelligence of 1 or 2.

Then there's punching someone with a Power Fist and watching half of there torso fucking EXPLODE.

I completely agree, on a lot of games the character creation portion is more fun for me than the actual game.  I think Fallout 2, Morrowind, Oblivion (especially if you got the facegen trial and did it to yourself and adjusted the sliders in Oblivion accordingly to make a really close replica of your face), and Neverwinter Nights 2 were like this.  The Sims a little bit too, although I didn't care for the game play of Sims all that much just the character creation.  The later Myst games were good for this too.

Fallout 2 was my favorite though because once you play through it a few times you have an idea of how the build you do is going to help you in specific situations. I actually started using cheats in that game to adjust my stats so I could see all the different reactions to situations based on the strengths and weaknesses of your character.  Also, was anyone else surprised at how much cheaper it was to play through the game as a female and exchange sex for things instead of money?  That saved me so much.

Fallout and fallout 2 are two of the best computer games i've ever played...
I bought Fallout: Brotherhood of Steel and i enjoyed that somewhat too... but i could only advise renting that. :-D

Brotherhood of Steel blew so much. I do have to admit Co-Op was mildly entertaining though.

Tactics was probably the only good game outside of the core 2 honestly. Outside of the continuity issues, i think a sequel would have polished everything that was wrong with the first one.
