OK so what are your favorite 10 bands, and why? I thought it would be interesting to get everyone?s takes and opinion.

(in no particular order)

Babyshambles (Pete Doherty is a great lyricist, and I love British music)
Reel Big Fish (amazing live shows, and the songs are full of energy)
Streetlight Manifesto (Jersey ska I rest my case)
Arcade Fire (Melodic and all around great)
Architecture in Helsinki (can't beat upbeat pop)
Playradioplay (happy electronic indie)
Jerry Garcia (I'm a hippy enough said)
Zolof the Rock and Roll destroyer (another upbeat band)
Sufjan Stevens (songs are just written very well)

Steve from Blues Clues

He actually has an album out and one in the process. Steve Drozd plays drums for him, and Dave Fridmann is his producer. I can't make up shit this wacky if I tried.

OMGZ DUDE!

A great deal of the music by both Blur and Weezer is as literate, eclectic and varied as Joy Division, Pink Floyd and Nick Cave.

In fact, I'd say that Blur have a lot more variety than Joy Division for certain.

But feel free to splutter at blink-182; they are a guilty, shameless pop pleasure for me.

1 Skyclad (Best lyrics ever, witty, satirical, human, eccentric Skyclad is everything I love about Britain as an anti-nationalist)
2 Sol Invictus (Incredible atmosphere, and again, brilliant lyrics, this time just hitting like a punch to the stomach)
3 Current 93 (Intricate personal mythology creates a fascinating and illuminating journey through beautiful soundscapes)
4 Edge of Sanity (One of the most innovative and under-rated metal bands of all time. DAN SWANO IST KRIEEEG!)
5 Coil (Gayer than Elton John sitting on a wedding cake, more experimental than William Burroughs turning Einsteins brain in to a cut-up poem)
6 Inkubus Sukkubus (My guilty pleasure? Ecstatic pagan goth rock. I don't really know why I like them so much, but I just DO)
7 Sopor Aeternus & The Ensemble of Shadows (A tortured, strange human heart opened up in music. Beautiful)
8 Agalloch (Post everything, a drift of smoke through dead forests, a leaf-strewn path of bones, the ultimate apocalyptic music)
9 Death in June (Layers of occult metaphor and meaning woven over some of the catchiest hooks and drum beats ever written)
10 Ewigkeit (Pure insanity, bought to you by one man and his basement, live from the doors of perception. I want to meet James Fogarty so badly.)

...possibly. But there's lots of worrying ommissions from that where I just can't remove another band. I can't believe Bathory, My Dying Bride, Ancient Rites or Pink Floyd aren't up there.

Hmm I think I could narrow it down to 10.

First and foremost.

Phish - Pure musical heaven.

Now everything else in no real order.

Pink Floyd - mostly for the Animals album.

Primus - As a young bassist they turned me to the world outside of punk.

Rage Against the Machine - Just excellent.

The Frog Brigade - This band is like the band to end all bands, awesome jams, Claypool, Eenor, Skerik. What more do you need?

The Living End - Ive seen these guys so many times and I still love them.

Yes - Especially the Rick Wakeman albums.

Mogwai - I only got into these guys in the last 6 months but I'm hooked.

Trey Anastasio's solo work.

Bela Fleck and the Flecktones - Bela Fleck and Vic Wooten in the one band. Oh, whats this FUTUREMAN. I think yes. (Going to see them in April)

Thats mine.

Pixies (Ridiculously consistent, perfect song writing, Surfer Rosa might be better mixed than any album ever)
Deerhoof (I love how they can write a great pop hook as well as they can dismantle one. They're one of the few bands that make me laugh with glee at their surprises)
David Bowie (What the hell am I supposed to say?)
Kraftwerk (Well electronic music would barely exist without them. Their work manages to be transcendent while encapsulating post-war cultural shifts)
Can (Krautrock legends, another band that makes me laugh without telling jokes. The weirdest act on this list)
The Field Mice (This band will probably never be on any official "greatest" lists. The were the top act on Sarah records which only put out singles- that doesn't really give you legend status. The singles aren't even THAT incredible, they're special for me though.)
My Bloody Valentine (Believe it or not Loveless isn't the only thing they good they put out. But yeah... that album)
The Fugees (One album. But its the best hip hop album ever- they manage to have excellent production to match the best rhymes of the 90's)
Q and Not U (post-hardcore from my home city. Partly dance punk without all the terrible things that dance punk became, partly beautiful guitar melodies and solid drumming that all fits perfectly)
Yo La Tengo (Consistent, superb noise pop (if you haven't noticed I have a thing for that sub genre)

1.  The Beatles (lyrics...sheer volume and variety of really great music)
2.  Led Zepplin (Amazing...just amazing.)
3.  Red Hot Chili Peppers (Sometimes fun and sometimes soulful.
4.  Miles Davis (Phenominal and brilliant improvisationalist)
5.  John Colhtrane (where Davis was cool Colhtrane had heart)
6.  Bob Dylan (Amazing lyrics and an addictive voice
7.  Pixies (Great just great
8.  Architecture in Helsinki(damned if I know why...its really different from what I normally listen to)
9.  Beastie Boys (they are so damn fun to listen to)
10. Gilberto Gil or Baden Powell i think...its tough.

The Decemberists (This is mostly because of Castaways and Cutouts. The combination of the lyrics and thesound they had back then just floors me. Their other albums have their moments too.)
My Bloody Valentine (Mostly because of Loveless, but I like how that sound on that album was developed over time)
Menomena (They have a unique sound and do it well)
Nick Drake (A great musician and songwriter)
M. Ward (he has a fantastic voice)
Architecture in Helsinki
Andrew Bird
Vetiver
Ted Leo & The Pharmacists
Arcade Fire
