So my girlfriend bought me a Martin for my birthday..

OH NOOOOOOOOO

dude I hate to tell you but the #1 rule of guitar buying is NEVER LET YOUR SIGNIFICANT OTHER BUY YOU A GUITAR. It's like getting a tattoo of her name- pretty much guarantees that you'll eventually break up and really regret it. It is a horrible horrible curse!

I think I even did a comic about this, but I can't remember.
Yeah, but you got a guitar out of the deal, didn't you?
And no, unless it was an indietits, I don't think you did. I don't remember the indietits ones so well, I think it has to do with the cut and paste artwork.

@Phaedra: Well, most people that can play guitar can play bass too, but don't because they are attention whores, which makes up most of the population of musicians. I can understand liking the lower end of the music, for me it really depends on the quality of the bass line or the guitar, I want to get a bass just to play stuff like Spacegrass, Orion, or For Whom the Bell Tolls, but that is going to come after a decent guitar and amp. Thanks for answering.

Well, she flat out refuses to be in a band with me.

It's pretty much a good thing 'cause it would raise the likelihood of a break-up.

I don't really see myself ever regretting it, regardless of what happens with the relationship.

Angst-riddled songs about other band members? On-stage quabbling and insulting?

That'd be a FANTASTIC band. Somebody do this now.

That Eastwood is pretty slick, although the green burst is kinda weird. Doesn't look like it'd balance very well either.

I finally got around to intonating my PRS 24 for drop-C tuning, since that's the only tuning I ever use on that guitar. Chords way up the neck sound really pretty now!

Maybe you're thinking of my McCarty? The lower output pickups on that one don't sound good below drop-D. My Standard 24 rocks pretty hard in drop-C though.

PRS are too polished and fancy and "Oh and here's my guitar polish" for my liking. I like a guitar where I don't have to care whether I get fingerprints all over the thing.

Patrick. Flamed maple. If you don't like that, we can't be friends anymore.

Ah, they have different pickups? I figured that they used the same kind, I should have known they weren't, but it seems logical to me to have only one or two kinds of pickups being used, a single-coil and a humbucker, simplifies production, but of course, you get different tones with different kinds, so efficiency isn't the most important thing. Is it the McCarty Soapbar or just McCarty?

Yes, you have awesome guitars, and your job is making QC, but there is something else you have that I don't have.

You'd love my standard 24. No fancy flamed maple, just a satin transparent black finish (which is slowly getting rubbed shiny by playing the guitar- the neck feels like JESUS now) over one-piece mahogany.

The McCarty, on the other hand, has a super shiny burst finish and a really nice flamed top.

I admit that I'm pretty jealous. While PRS guitars do give off a bit of a 'polished coffee table' vibe, that doesn't change the fact that they're still extremely nice to look at and have a rather nice tone, although I'd still take my old Les Paul over a PRS.

Have you seen the 'modern eagle' one of whatever it's called? Now THAT is a beautiful guitar.

I saw one in an ad one time. Really faded blue finish. Looked like someone had taken a pair of old-ass jeans and made it into a guitar.

Not a fan of flamey guitars either. I think it is the preponderance of crappy Epi LP's I've seen. Maybe it is just because I don't like it. Plus I feel like, ugh, it's veneer or a "cap" or whatever. It's a countertop to cover up your guitar might be some bs fuglier looking wood underneath. And if I am playing a plywood guitar, I want it to look like that.

grrr, some serious quality control issues with gibsons these days. hell, yesterday i went to the local shop, took down their $3000+ gibson les paul and played it and was not impressed. sure thats partially my opinion but for 3000 dollars i would want a flamed maple top to be properly bookmatched! that one looked like each side was from a different tree.

I hear you. I think it was some really beautiful Gibson I'd seen some years ago, ES-347 or something. This would have been late 90's or early oughties.  The one's they sent to be reviewed -and this was nearly a $5k Gibson were all flawed and had a bunch of just plain screw ups in the finish. I think that made me pause and think that if you send a guitar that screwed up to a national publication for review you might just be morons. I've played some nice ones. And any company is going to put out some bad ones. But dayum.

I could pretty much stop a battleship with my 70's 'stang. For some really peculiar reason it is heavier than a P or Jazz bass. I mean there is something deranged about that little bastard. Maria's neck through uber maple Carvin bass is the only heavier instrument we have I think.

Also,
All guitars should have stainless steel frets. It's on my evil dictator list with a complete ban on gold hardware. B F Skinner was right. we need to move Beyond Freedom and Dignity (he was really talking about nickel frets, and fugly gold hardware).

Yeah...the Modern Eagles kind of piss me off, because they're the kind of guitar that's so expensive it's not even meant to be played. Just hang it on your wall so your lawyer friends think you're cool, that sort of thing.

Gibsons have had quality control issues, expecially in their finishes, for years and years. I think it's probably because they still do everything by hand, whereas people like fender and PRS use robots for everything now.

So a hand built Gibson with a robot tuner = you are not getting it?
(I'd never use one, a robot tuner; that is- I'd have an ES-335 or some such)

And guitars not meant to be played. Wouldn't that not make you just jump on their couch, snatch it off the wall straddle the guitar and play it with your teeth until the barrister wrestled you to the ground? I bet that guy has a Harley worth more than all three of our vehicles.

You're actually complaining about design flaws here, though.

It doesn't matter if a creaking CNC machine or George D'Angelico himself makes a guitar if it's built from a flawed design.

Gibsons have had quality control issues, expecially in their finishes, for years and years. I think it's probably because they still do everything by hand, whereas people like fender and PRS use robots for everything now.

I just looked at Gibson's photos of their process; it looks like they use robots as much as PRS, that is, for CNC rough cut of body and neck and cavity routing. Finishing isn't automated at PRS; looks like Gibson just isn't very good at what they do. Also, their neck shaping method is retarded.

You're actually complaining about design flaws here, though.

It doesn't matter if a creaking CNC machine or George D'Angelico himself makes a guitar if it's built from a flawed design.

Sure, but there's compromises that can be made without sacrificing the structural integrity of the neck while improving that of the headstock. But I can go for years about this.

Can I go back to masturbating over Squier instruments now?

Please donate the dano on the far left and the LP to me, I am poor and in need of guitars.

Edit: Also, what's the model of the dano? I am actually dying to get my hands on one.
