I'm leaving in an hour to get my hair cut. Should I go with the old faithful (just above the shoulder and pretty shaggy) or do something different?

Depends on how gutsy you're feeling. I say go with something different if you're up for it!

Chowburger, the first one is nice but the second one is so beautiful it makes me ache (that could be hunger, but the point still stands). Don't chop off your hair if you are capable of doing pretty things like that to it! I'm also sick of ponytails and I don't know how to do that kind of thing, is it tricky?

There's this really handy "other thing" I'm going to write as a footnote to my abstract that I can probably explore these issues in. I think I'll call it my "dissertation."

Oh man, Chow, please come here and do that to my hair, I can never figure out how to plait it all the way around.

Also, RE: Long curly hair, you have the same options as straight hair to be perfectly honest, braids, buns, ponytails, etc. Please don't cut off your hair it is so lovely

Yeah, to be honest, I think it's going to be a looooong time before I can bear to part with my hair again. It used to be waist length, then I cut it to my chin, and now it's some of the way down my back and I love it and hate it all at once. My life is just so hard :/

It's not actually plaited all the way around up there — just two pigtails pinned up on top. I think it was this video that I copied it off. Supremely easy, and I'm pretty retarded when it comes to doing anything with hair (other than, like, uh, washing it).

I think if I saw a girl with plaited hair like that I would probably fall in love with them.

I could never just start plaiting my hair like that and expect it to look like anything other than silly. There is just too much hair. I always have to french braid, or do something like this or this.

They are just more time-consuming and more work, but so is having long hair, so.

Last night I put an egg on my head! Today, instead of this my hair was slightly other this and this. I am really annoyed that the camera refused to focus on me, because it makes it hard to see the difference, but basically it made my hair shinier and the curls are fatter and more spirally. I also think it made it fuzzier. Oh, well, I guess I will just have to get a gel or something.

It was a whole egg. From what I read, if you have coarse hair the protein can dry the hair out, but you still need it, so basically if you don't know if your hair is fine or not (like me) just mix it with a bunch of your regular moisturizing conditioner. If you have really dry hair, put in a tablespoon or two of some kind of oil (I used virgin olive oil, since I didn't have anything else except canola). It looks really awful but you mix it all together and I just kind of poured it all over my hair and stuff, left it for a minute or two, and rinsed it out.

You aren't supposed to do this more than like once every two weeks because the proteins will coat your hair and make it crunchy. Next time I am going to try leaving it on a little longer; there is something called porosity that I don't really know much about, but people with fine hair benefit from proteins and people with low porosity (I think?) need more protein than others, and black/African hair is both of these I guess so some of the sites where black ladies are trying to grow their hair out had recipes for two eggs, avocado oil (it has protein in it) and conditioner and they leave it on until it gets hard and then shampoo it out or something.

I dunno! I was just experimenting. I am really annoyed about the frizziness, though. It is worse than I thought and I am still not sure if that was the egg or the new conditioner I had to use, but I have got to fix it.

In truth you are better off eating all those things so the goodness goes into your body and feeds your hair that way. Eating well is one of the best things you can do for your hair.

I have just gone from bright orange hair with long sideswept fringe/bangs to a very normal looking for me brown with a very short straight across fringe.

I'm in shock & cannot get used to it :(

Actually the egg thing going directly on your hair is quite popular and common. I have done it every few weeks since I posted that and it is working pretty well, and not in a way that would happen if I were eating the eggs. It helps to shore up damage to your cuticle, because once your hair has already grown out past your scalp eating shit can't help it, remember? And even people like me who don't process their hair or even use a hair dryer have damage to the ends and stuff. That is what the egg is for.

Sean, as opposed to a couple of years ago: You look really grown up dude. What the hell.

Also, I feel like the long hair is kinda your thing, it looks good.

Edit: on the other hand, who cares what other people might think. Cut it short as you like. It feels good.

So, what sort of advice does the Serious Pony Discussion Forum have to offer to a guy who has really thick hair, and lots of it? It's not very long, and I try to model it, but even with specialist strong-fix gel I can never get it to stay the way I want it to, whether I use small or large amounts. It always sinks down flat. I have yet to try lightweight gel. That, or just let it hang and grow it out, although I'm not sure that would work for me. Halp?

My hair is getting really long, and I'm super excited about this.  However, 2 inches on the ends are dead and gross.  I'm so torn.  Do I chop them off and make my hair super healthy or just keep them there while it continues to grow so long.  I straighten my hair a lot, so even when I trim the ends, a month later, the ends are fried again, so I'm thinking I should just keep frying the ones that are already dead and not kill a new two inches and push myself into this cycle of death.   I use heat protective stuff on my hair, but it doesn't work well enough that it doesn't kill it quickly, so I'm not sure what other options I have.  Help?

Dear hairdresser,

I gave you very specific instructions. I even gave you the size you should use on your razor. I showed you how much hair I wanted left on my head by holding it.

You still managed to screw this up.

Hey guys, guess who's now sporting a Generic Haircut? I think I got what I paid for? But still, damn.

The buzz cut was dumb, the Beehive was dumb. I mean I 'get' that Natalie Portman made a splash but I would hardly give it a spot on the list since its kind of a haircut that has been around since they could sharpen rocks, and maybe the behind would have made sense, but not on a strung out musician.

I would have preferred this to be done as more of a retrospective. Giving us haircuts in a specific timeline with a when and why they became famous. Not just 20 random photos of different haircuts on different celebrities.

Completely agree.  Most of the photos were from recently (like the terrible Amy Winehouse decision), whereas the haircuts represented by the photos tended not to sync up with the time period of the haircut.

By the buzz cut, do you mean in general, or just on women? Because I see nothing at all wrong with it, but I could see why it could be argued that it looks bad on women (makes them look much more boyish).

Nobody said there was anything wrong with it, but the inclusion of it in a list of haircuts from the last 100 years is rather silly, since it's not really a significant haircut in popularity or innovation (since it wasn't really developed in that period).

Well I was going to ask some advice about hair colour but seeing as all the photos I have as examples are of me rocking a beehive (Which I've been doing since 2004) I think I may not bother.

In defence of the beehive I could find soooooo many awesome pictures but I'm going with someone who is the opposite of Whino-house:

Maybe I wasn't clear enough, as a should-have-been retrospective. The beehive would have been someone from the era in which it was innovative and popular, and especially not on a blundering regret of a contemporary celebrity.

For instance, the pixie was done right, the Rachel was done right, the whatever Farrah Fawcets haircut was called was done right. Certain haircuts like the buzz that predate civilization or the beehive of a product of 2005 kind of ruin the whole 'perspective.'

*edit*

Just looking over the pics to affirm my opinions and found this gem I neglected to mention:

Bradford Crusty punks have this, but more dredlocked & messier on the top. It's horrible. Also Gyspys.

Bassist: I reckon I can pull of a beehive. Esp. as it is more inspired by B52's & 60's girl groups (Maybe a little of Pasty Ab Fab) than that travesty of a parody of herself. It's normally pretty tidy. I'm trying to pick a picture to prove my point, but then it's down to opion & you might think I suck when I think I look slammin'

Amy Winehouse's beehive is awful and sloppy. Why is half of it down? Did it fall out? And why are there curls and wisps all over it? Didn't her mother teach her how to backcomb and smooth it over properly?

Beehives are from an era when the styles subtly indicated how much work went into them, because having the time to spend on yourself was such a luxury (or you had a maid or a hairdresser or something to help). Time still is a luxury, but the looks have changed to suit our busy lifestyles. However, if you look at wedding up-dos and stuff for women, they are still simpler versions of the artistic creations they used to be.
