As do I. Jens, I like the hair!

I am getting a haircut Thursday and I think I've decided to let it grow out a little this time around. We'll see what happens.

Okay, so the boy is after some kind of new hairstyle. He isn't overly fussed on anything that will be long and face covering and annoying, but he feels like he needs to do something different. I have suggested that instead of just getting his brother to buzz it all off short and let it grow out again, that perhaps he goes to an actual hairdresser, but he has no idea what he wants! Advice?

Here are some photos of his hair now:

If he doesnt know what he wants, let him grow it a wee bit longer, and haul him off to an hairdresser. Tell her to go nuts on his hair! See what you end up with ;)

Gene, yeah that is kind of my only idea seeing as he is refusing to do anything that involves some kind of hairstyle that involves hair over his face. I mean, he doesn't do a lot to it when he does his hair in the morning, just puts some product in it to do that spikey thing he's got going on at the front, which annoys him if it gets too long. I might have to try and dig up some photos to show him what can be done with slightly longer hair.

EDIT: I'll imageshack the picture or something guys, sorry. :(

I got a haircut today. I took some advice and went to an honest-to-goodness real man's barbershop.

They had old wood and leather barber chairs, black and white checkered floors, even a velvet-lined compartment in which went my glasses while I was getting my hair cut. The place smelled of sandalwood and pure, unbridled masculinity instead of the foul pomade and disinfectant smell of a typical salon. A guy named Jerry who was wearing a tailored suit and a Swiss wristwatch shook my hand, asked me in great detail what I wanted (I told him to go nuts because I had no idea) and then cut my hair with clippers, scissors, and a straight razor.

The price was super reasonable ($28 plus a generous tip- I had just gotten paid) and this is what I got. A+ would hair again.

Where is this? If I ever end up living in NY again I need to know. I usually end up going to the Astor Place barbers because well they're okay and reasonably cheap, but I've also been recently converted to just getting a good haircut done, and yeah... where is this?

71st and Lexington. I generally dislike the Upper East Side but it makes sense that they'd have a gentlemen's barbershop there and not in some hip downtown neighborhood.

Coincidentally, the guy who cut my hair has been doing it for twenty five years, and his first job was at Astor Place Hair during the heyday of the punk and rockabilly scenes there.

Thank you very much!

I've been considering learning to shave with a straight razor. I've tried pretty much everything over the last few years, tri-headed electric razor, disposable razor, Gillette Power Fusion with disposable cartridges and all of them irritate my skin and don't give me a particularly close shave.

While I'm a bit intimidated by the selection and maintenance processes, and somewhat afraid I'm going to slice my neck open, I feel like it would be a worthwhile thing to learn. Thoughts?

The slightly effeminate dude with the suspenders? I'm not entirely sure about it. It's a tiny bit like what I've had for many years now on and off. I do however quite like that it is pretty damn long on top now, so I can get some pretty serious headbanging going. I'd love to have something to throw around like I have now, when my band starts playing shows in a few months.

I have considered this one too. I look surprisingly good with that "haircut".

I mean, grow it out then. I'm of the mind that you look better with shorter hair.

Pores? I thought we were talking about manly things.

Having clogged pores, blackheads, and oily skin is not a manly thing. It's a shitty thing.

Everything I've read so far seems to suggest that extra virgin olive oil moisturizes really well though.

I was actually more thinking of getting the sides cut short, and retaining like 90% of the length on top, and slick it back.

cold pressed oils are actually really great for your skin. one of my favourite moisturizers that i adore but unfortunately cannot afford to actually use on a regular basis (this) contains extra virgin olive oil and it seriously does wonders for my face. it's the oil that comes out of your face that does more damage to your skin than the oil you put on it, and trying to strip it of oil entirely causes your pores to overcompensate and make even more, which causes breakouts.

Do I want to grow my hair out and just get a trim tomorrow or do I want this:

I can't decide. My hair is currently longer on top and in back and I was thinking of just having the back trimmed up and growing out the top a little more. But it's hot, so getting it a bit shorter all over is so very tempting.

If you're willing to put in the time and effort to style your hair like that every day, then absolutely go for it 1000%.

As it stands your short hair is kind of boring.

So having washed all the pink out for my real job, dyed it red, which has washed & sunbleached out to a pale strawberry blonde colour, which is very nice, but I kinda want another change.

I've been debating doing the whole "Put toner on it until it's a bit like a blue rinse" look. Is that completely awful? I really can't make up mind mind...Thoughts?

Ugh please don't.

Edit: My hair is sort of milder version of that right now actually. It got like this by accident and I really hate it. What happened was that I bleached it about 5 months back, and the regrowth since then has been dyed blonde instead of bleached, so I ended up with different shades of blonde. My hairdresser recommended me a silver/purple shampoo to make it less yellow and turn the regrowth into a colour more like my bleached hair, but the shampoo only worked on my bleached hair instead, so the yellow hair is still yellow and the bleached hair has a slight purple tint to it. My plan is to bleach it all soon and then continue using the shampoo, so I get a really cool and silvery blonde tone to my hair instead of the mess it is right now. Much nicer!

I kind of had that for a while but my hair was insanely short so it really just looked like it was incredibly light blue, and worked pretty well. I doubt that'd be the case for you, unless you want to buzz it all off.
