Got a sharter haircut, want to reshave the sides but I gotta go to a wedding and get a job. So now I have a respectable super dykey haircut. Post job and post wedding is pride week so I'll reshave it then.

my hair is always perplexing but it is even more perplexing than usual lately

I honestly just don't know what to do with it! I definitely am just tired of having a big ol' shaggy mop in the back, but I don't feel like asking my lady to just buzz it all off again because I have a funny shaped head and super short haircuts accentuate this fact. I always get flustered at haircutting places though and am never sure what to ask for so, uh, what should I do? What do you think would look good on my noggin?

My tactic tends to be to go to the hairdressers and say "I want it to be a bit shorter but no shorter than [however long you want it to be], what do you think would work?". Usually I end up with the same kind of style each time, so I guess it is the one that suits my face shape? Try doing that.

I've had the same problem you're having for years. My hair would get shaggy and shapeless (and the bangs would do that infuriating flippy thing) but if I cut the front too short I would look really awkward on account of my high forehead.

Go to a barbershop (not a salon, here's why) and have them trim your back and sides short with a clipper. Keep the top shaggy at your discretion, maybe invest in some simple pomade or styling gel, and you're golden.

I wonder if there are any decent barbershops near here. I think that before the next time I go on a date, I'll get a proper straight-razor shave if there is a good barber near enough to me.

that aom thing has me missing my grandpa. he would always go to this one barbershop here in town, and i'd go in with him. and yeah, there always were a bunch of dudes in there just hanging out... hmm.

for me though, as a lady, the thing that has helped me the most is being friends with hair-bitches (self proclaimed). i just kind of tell my friend carly what sort of maintenance i do (she already knows though), how much shorter i want it, and what's the biggest thing i care about with it. then i just go "make me cute". ie i have kinda wavy hair so it has nice spirals, which she already knows about so i tell her i don't blow it dry hardly ever, just put some product in and go, i'm trying to grow it out, and i want to cover my grays but to be honest i probably won't be coming in all the time for touch ups, but i do want it to be fun and creative. but this is a person who already knows my hair and has seen it and me many times so knows my tastes... having a relationship with a hairdresser (like if you have a great haircut once, keep going back to that same person!) makes it SO much easier

So I decided to follow Mr. Ballard's advice and I went to a barber!

I'm not even sure how good of a job he did but I'm glad that all that mass is gone now. And he was pretty charming, especially considering how he remarked after all was said and done that "You looked like a Beatle on crack walking in here. You're welcome."

You look good man. You'll begin to notice an awesome change once it starts growing out. I can't say I was instantly pleased when I walked out of the shop but in a few days to a few weeks, depending on your style and preference, you'll likely be really happy with it.

You should get some sort of light hair product (no goopy gel crap, just some really light pomade or styling mousse) and spread a little on your palms and fingers and run them through damp hair after a shower. Make sure to towel dry it first.

If you experiment with this and a comb you might find something you like. I never used hair products until I got a nice proper barbershop haircut and that opened up quite a few possibilities.
