Andy if you're looking for the best way to get around that problem, buy a few disposable mascara wands and after you apply a couple of coats, run a clean brush over your eyelashes. It seperates them really well.

Also, I love these mascaras:
Cheap - Maybelline Full N' Soft (which is what I use pretty much every day)

More expensive (but definitely worth the money)
Kiss Me Mascara by Blinc. You can buy it at Sephora and it forms these little tubes around your eyelashes that don't come off even if you rub your eyes or go swimming or sweat or whatever -- don't buy the L'Oreal knock-off. Go with the real deal.
Bad Gal Blue by Benefit. This you can get either at Sephora, The Bay or Shopper's Drug Mart. It has a huge brush that defines really well and it's blue which a) adds a splash of colour if you don't really wear a lot of colour, and b) makes your eye colour really, really stand out.

I love makeup. Love it love it love it. I used to want to be a makeup artist, doing either high fashion or special effects. I have way too much of it -- the amount of money I've spent on makeup probably adds up to about $800. I'll post some pictures soon...

Also, one of my favourite quotes about makeup!
"I don't understand makeup, Gloria -- why wear it at all? Isn't it dishonest?"
"My dear, the reason we wear makeup is to prevent the world from seeing what we're like underneath."
"What's wrong with that?"
"What's wrong with that? My dear, if you allow your feelings to be exposed, people will hurt you with them. They will use your feelings against you. Something once private and sacred to you will be transformed into a weapon. Something precious will be damaged. You will experience pain."

I have fair skin and even though I'm more of a brunette, I can't really pull off heavy black all around the eyes. Instead I use pretty much any other color like dark brown, purple, etc.

For more drama I add extra volume black mascara and black liquid eyeliner on top. I feel like because its sparing it makes the eyes pop more. In more of a feline way rather than creepy undead way.

Generally I line the waterline with dark brown rather than black because black makes my eyes look smaller, although I may add a little black to the outerthird of my waterline. Underneath I use anything but black really.

I think eyeliner is one of those things that you definitely have to figure out thorugh trial and error what looks best for you and the shape of your eye. I'd say decide if you want to go with the natural shape of your eye, in which case you can just wiggle the pencil between your eyelashes on top and more gently follow the bottom ones. Or if you want it to be something else, try to envision what slant you want it to be like and draw it, this can be easier if you leave your eyes open while looking at the mirror and drawing a guide before closing them and drawing. Try different stuff--drawing on all or part of the waterline, all or part of the bottom, drawing the edge of your top eye above or along your eyelashes, etc. And keep in mind that like me somethings are better in a lighter or darker color depending on your skin tone. I feel like eyeliner is something I've only just figured out!

I had actually not known about that technique, thanks! My best friend from high school is coming over and we'll spend a very girly evening, watching West Side Story and playing with clothes and make-up.

On that note: How do you apply mascara without scrathing your eyeball? I once saw a TV documentary about different eye injuries. There was something about mascara-filled scratches of the eyeball which totally freaked me out.

Also: Can anyone of you friendly make-up pros recommend something (sorry, don't know the name for that again) that you can apply to your eye-lid? I'm looking for something that you can smear with your finger or a little brush. What colour would work with brown mascara and eye-liner?

It's really weird, I have worked as a model but I was usually reading a book when they applied the make-up and did my hair. I could have learned so much!

What color are your eyes?  There are SO MANY different shadow colors and technicques to use, depending on what you're going for.  I tend to wear different colors based on my clothes.  A girl I once knew would use the color identical to her shirt.  Lime green, hot pink... it looked good for her, but isn't something I'd recommend.

If I'm bored and in a rush, I will just use neutral tones (especially good with brown liner/mascara).  Beige, beige-pink, and browns tend to look nice and not draw too much attention.  if you go with a darker color shadow, use a lighter one right under your brow.  It will make your brows appear to be higher.

Krina:
This all seems as far out as brain surgery to me. How do you know how to do this? Is it all trial and error or is there some secret make-up-gene that I'm lacking?

My eyes are mostly green:
