Wavves
« on: 02 May 2009, 05:08 »

Does anyone actually like these guys or is just their F&F and blog zombies?

Anyone else think Nathan Williams is a talentless hack rehashing early 90's slacker DIY, lo-fi indie (Pavement, Sebadoh, GBV etc.) riding on the curtails of No Age and all those other trite 'shitgaze' bands?

Does anyone understand the hype these guys get 'cause I don't understand hipsters anymore?

Hey Pitchfork, why give Wavves an 8.1 and a "Daytripping" segment only to give Crocodiles, another band doing the exact same thing (no lie) a 4.1 and getting pissed off at them for trying to be "the next Wavves"?

WHY??? FUCK U SHITGAZE!!!

I like Crocodiles more than Wavves, but I do like the Wavves single. Watching a video of him performing live is fucking awful though. I don't think he is talentless though, he has written some nice songs.

Also Pitchfork loves to be contentious, do not listen to them. Sometimes they find cool bands, that some other blogger probably found first and they just re-posted, but that is good enough for me.

And Shitgaze is the worst name for a genre and I think it is just Vice Magazine having a laugh as usual.

Shitgaze is very, very hit or miss with me.

Mostly miss. It is called "shitgaze" for a reason, folks.

I like Wavves well enough, but he certainly has gotten way more attention then some of the other similar artists like Crocodiles.

I don't really understand, cause in my mind Wavves only has 2 songs.  So Bored, and No Hope Kids.  Awesome fucking songs, but that album is definitely not an 8.1.

Sounding this shitty and intentionally lo-fi is what you do when you're in a black metal band.

Do you mean he is responsible for all post AJFA albums or just the last two albums?

I cannot tell I deal with many different subtle kinds of people who think Metallica sold out, for example I once met a man who thought Metallica had sold out their thrash roots after Master of Puppets (that is my favourite opinion about Metallica to date)

Very true. The noisy electronic parts are really pointless and crap.

It's just pronounced as Waves, that's the way he says it in the pitchfork video. He's playing in Glasgow in June, I'm not sure if I should go or not. Everyone says he's awful live.

You know, upon listening to Wavvves, I think you fellows might like his debut LP more. It concentrates more on the shimmering 60s revival that he's actually pretty good at, rather than his strange and kinda unpleasant genre experimentations.

I think Pitchfork is pretty alright. They don't really seem to pay much attention to the music I personally care about these days, though. I like Pitchfork.tv a lot and their featured articles are occasionally pretty interesting. I think the reason people seem to hate the site so much is because it has become difficult to view it as a group of individuals with their own opinions writing about music; it seems to have evolved into a monolithic taste-making beast and I don't think that is something many people want to have their opinions associated with.

I didn't like Wavves live really, but he DID make fun of my roommate's stupid boyfriend so therefore he's okay by me. Vampire Hands opened and I liked them a lot more. They're a psych-y kind of fun and were way better live than what I'm listening to online. IE don't sound like they're in a tiny metal shack.

I like the album, but I was a little disappointed in them live. It was so clean, and the fuzz on the album is what I liked about it. It doesn't take much to re-enact that either; you just need crappy equipment pushed to within an inch of his life. When I saw him he had a drummer and himself, playing a brand new, really expensive guitar through a Vintage Marshall  rig. I'm probably the only person who cares about this, but it's a real turn off seeing a scuzz rock band with equipment they bought with their parents money. I still like the album, and if they come to Baltimore again I'll probably go see them, but they're not the second coming.

I'll have to check out Crocodiles, though. Thanks for the rec.

Also, if anyone saw that live footage that Pitchfork posted, you should know that he's not as bad live as he is in that footage (at least he wasn't when I saw him). After I saw that my heart sank and I was genuinely perplexed. Still, I went to his show and was happily surprised to see that it was not as bad as P-fork.tv made it out to be.

It wasn't live changing, but it was alright. I went in with really low expectations and was surprised.
