Good. I'm kicking myself in the face for not downloading that blind willie mctell collection ages ago.
Mediafire sucks my ass.  I've tried twice now to upload my megapost and it has megacrashed twice about an hour into the process.

Vol 1 of that McTell collection is part of my post.  I'm just going to up them one at a time and edit the links into the post.

This is one of my first posts, the first with any contribution.  I'd like to give back to a site that has given me so much over the last months.  This is a compilation of some of my favorite blues records.

Blind Willie McTell - Complete Recorded Works, Vol. 1

Code: [Select]
http://sharebee.com/0576daebFrom allmusic:
Quote
Willie Samuel McTell was one of the blues' greatest guitarists, and also one of the finest singers ever to work in blues. A major figure with a local following in Atlanta from the 1920s onward, he recorded dozens of sides throughout the 1930s under a multitude of names -- all the better to juggle "exclusive" relationships with many different record labels at once -- including Blind Willie, Blind Sammie, Hot Shot Willie, and Georgia Bill, as a backup musician to Ruth Mary Willis. And those may not have been all of his pseudonyms -- we don't even know what he chose to call himself, although "Blind Willie" was his preferred choice among friends. Much of what we do know about him was learned only years after his death, from family members and acquaintances....Of all the compilations of McTell's early work, this is probably the most rewarding, because it includes both his Victor songs (including "Statesboro Blues") and his Columbia sides (which have been issued separately by Columbia-Legacy), and RCA-BMG seems to be in no hurry to put any of the Victor material out as a comprehensive collection. The songs all have some noise -- there are no "masters" to speak of on acoustic blues of this vintage -- but none of it is overly obtrusive, and the orderly chronology is very illuminating. Subsequent volumes from Document are also worthwhile, but Sony-Legacy does have superior workmanship in dealing with much of the same material.

Lightnin' Hopkins - Mojo Hand

Code: [Select]
http://www.mediafire.com/?5wtmbizneq4From Amazon:
Quote
One of Lightin' Hopkins' greatest & rarest releases is now out on CD. Mojo Hand (originally released on the Fire label late in 1960) is particularly interesting because it presents Hopkins in a context that ranges from blues to classic R&B. The album's title track, originally released as a single, has become one of the artist's signature tunes. While 'Have You Ever Loved A Woman' features Hopkins on piano, 'Glory Be' is characterized by Hopkins' trademark guitar playing. 'Sometimes She Will' is also characterized by Hopkins' instantly recognizable guitar & pronounced vocals, while 'Awful Dreams' is notable for its apocalyptic text. Features 15 tracks including 6 bonus tracks, 'Shake That Thing', 'Walk A Long Time', 'Last Night', 'Just Pickin'', 'Bring Me My Shotgun' & 'Mojo Hand' (Live At 1965 Newport Folk Festival). Packaged in a miniature LP gatefold sleeve. Universal. 2003.

Junior Kimbrough - You Better Run

Code: [Select]
http://www.mediafire.com/?b1gyvtyagfpFrom Amazon:
Quote
When Junior Kimbrough died in January 1998, part of the spirit of Mississippi hill-country blues went with him. He was a proud musician, aware of his African roots and his artistic singularity--perhaps the last unique voice in the genre. The sound of his bawling singing and unpredictable, serpentine guitar were as eerie as a warm wind humming through a field of tombstones, as hypnotic as the ancient village drum music it was based on, thanks to his complete command of his rhythm sections. This collection serves full notice of Kimbrough's authenticity, from his first recording, an impromptu-sounding "Release Me" played with rockabilly cult figure Charlie Feathers, through his last '90s albums for Fat Possum. It's in the latter cases that Kimbrough paints a colorful portrait of his hardscrabble life just above the Delta. Rape is wrongly equated with love (in the brutal-but-fascinating title track), and sexual prowess ("All Night Long") is the only true coin of manhood. Finally, "Done Got Old" serves as the best epitaph for this blues hell-raiser, whose decades of bootlegging, boozing, and womanizing seemed to catch up with him in his final years. Nonetheless, that song and the 11 others prove that no matter how tired and worn he became, Kimbrough's crackling music never lost its edge or its feeling of danger and menace. --Ted Drozdowski

And last but not least, my personal favorite:
Reverend Gary Davis - From Soul To Gospel

Code: [Select]
part one - http://www.mediafire.com/?yibzh9cjy9x
part two - http://www.mediafire.com/?byzc5notdvm
part three - http://www.mediafire.com/?l0vzqjonqj7
From Amazon:
Quote
From 1914 until his death in 1972, Reverend Gary Davis influenced a crop of future musical luminaries from blues to folk to rock ‘n’ roll. Born partially blind at birth in 1896, the self-taught guitarist fashioned his earliest instrument from a broom and pie pan. His style was later adopted by the likes of Ry Cooder, Jorma Kaukonen and Taj Mahal, all of whom studied under him for a five-dollar fee. This collection marks the last recordings made by Davis, one year prior to his death.

This is encoded in FLAC format, but don't be dissuaded by the large download.  It is well worth it:

Seeing all this Múm in here, I thought I'd up some Mugison for you.

Lonely Mountain
Quote
Mugison's music takes you to an oddball land of broken drum machines, acoustic guitars, blustered hushed/throaty vocals and tinpot drums. Occasional blasts of electricity will make your hair stand on end and sizzle your toes. Check the beautiful 'Ear', quite the best ever non-Radiohead, Radiohead song that i've heard in a long, long time. Eight sneakily flamboyant tracks in an old school style, 33 mins and 33 seconds. Truly wonderful stuff. Very big recommendation.

And Mugimama - Is This Monkeymusic
Quote
The third album by Icelandic one-man-band Mugison has nothing in particular to do with the ethereal art rock of his compatriots Sigur Rós and Björk: Mugimama, Is This Monkey Music? is as oddball as its title, its D.I.Y.-sounding songs interwoven with cut-and-paste electronic breaks, spoken word interludes, and homemade sound effects, like the frankly rather irritating sound of water being poured that forms part of the rhythm track of "Birds." The sonic decorations get kind of exasperating after a while, because they're both extraneous and unnecessary: much like Will Oldham or Vic Chesnutt, Mugison is a master of building bizarre lyrical constructs that suddenly reveal unexpected depths of emotion, such as "Salt" and "Sad as a Truck." The album's high point is its most straightforward song, the immediately catchy Beck-like alterna-folk of "Murr Murr," which features both a strong chorus and a great, funky country-blues guitar riff. It proves that Mugison can write and record appealing songs without having to futz with them too much in the process, a lesson that might be put to better use in the future.

I don't know if anyone wants this, but it was one of the rather random CDs I copied last week. Sometime tonight or tomorrow, I have a few CDs from The Blow to upload, plus a few other people.

Badly Drawn Boy - About A Boy

Code: [Select]
http://www.mediafire.com/?0vjjg4uiez9
Quote
Amg:
It was an odds-on favorite that Badly Drawn Boy's warped yet sunny vision of pop would fit in well with a Nick Hornby novel-turned-movie (especially one about a sensitive, literate, slightly confused man struggling with the responsibilities of most persons his age). Still, there were several unknowns going into the project. Could an artistic iconoclast like Damon Gough control himself when forced to conform by writing a set of songs for specific situations? Would his collection of eccentric production touches, pure honey to any introspective music fan, make any sense in the context of a highly anticipated, wide-release film? Could he even write an entire soundtrack, during an era when most artists hardly average an album every three years? While a first listen proves that Gough's songwriting smarts are so powerful and wide-ranging they work in any context (much less pop songs for movies), several listens are necessary for its real brilliance to shine through. In a similar fashion to the work of Harry Nilsson, his closest pop forebear, a Badly Drawn Boy song is deceptively simple; his pleasant melodies often cloak a set of sharp, thoughtful lyrics and many graceful harmonic turns. Gough's voice, emotional with just a hint of gravel, sounds perfect behind the Hollywood sheen of these arrangements, with Tom Rothrock behind the boards. The single "Silent Sigh" is the highlight, with Gough masterfully tripping over his lines and accentuating the title with his breathy delivery. It's the cumulative weight, however, that really impresses. Each of these songs works well -- even the tossed-off electro-pop pieces "S.P.A.T." and "File Me Away" -- in either the delightful context of the movie or as a stand-alone work. Though both artist and label hedged bets by explaining it away as an outside work and not the "official" Badly Drawn Boy sophomore album, it's difficult to imagine how Badly Drawn Boy could've improved on The Hour of Bewilderbeast any better than this astonishing work.

I totally agree. The movie was awful. I came across the cd last week when I was trying to find a couple more songs for my show, and I really liked the music. There's actually a better cover that goes with the radio pre-release that was sent to college radio stations,it almost passed for having nothing to do with the movie when I found it.

Dogbowl - Tit! ...an Opera

First album from founding member of King Missile, Dogbowl, aka The Reason King Missile Was a Lot More Interesting Before 1990.  He was kicked out the band for being "too crazy" (in other words, he got Frusciante'd).

This album is fantastically out of print and thus can usually only be found for less than $20 if you're insanely lucky.  It is somewhat of a cult classic and gem amonst those who like music that could be called by any of these terms:

Freak Folk
Acoustic Punk
Catchy
Pop
Only Slightly Less Lyrically Wacky than Roky Erickson
But Just as Talented at Songwriting

The tracks on the album are untagged, because it is old and look, people, it's free.  Tag them yourself if you're interested.  I'm the one uploading it, if you like it enough to keep it you can do the work of tagging it.  Also, there are 22 songs and piss off, I don't feel like tagging 22 songs because I've got alcohol to drink and I had a weekend that was a blur of playing the loudest, most experimental show I have ever played without getting naked, scotch, and gay bar karaoke so I'm a bit run down.  Thanks!   :-)

Here are the songs:

1 on the monkeybars
2 starving for love
3 obsessed with girls
4 oklahoma
5 under the water
6 the girl with the pelican hair
7 miss you so much (I can die)
8 growing up in a wheelchair
9 volcano
10 sad fellow
11 krystellina
12 when the romans died
13 anastasia
14 sex gorillas
15 dolphin
16 daytime
17 I had a dream of the plague
18 flowers for katrinka
19 marla sits
20 one so black
21 head caves in
22 blue eyes

After spending years on the dancefloor with Black Cherry and Supernature, Goldfrapp takes a breather with The Seventh Tree. Allison Goldfrapp and Will Gregory slow down the beats and break out the acoustic guitars on a set of songs that suggest chilling out in a field during a hazy, watercolor summer; this is music for after the party, not after-parties. "Clowns" opens the album with finger-picked acoustic guitar, birdsongs, and Allison's nearly wordless vocalizing, making a statement that's bold because it's so gentle -- the effect is like stepping out into a sunny morning after spending all night in a club. At first, it's a shock, and then it feels great. Avoiding the glammy dance-pop of the duo's previous two albums is a bit of a risk, since Goldfrapp could probably make endless variations on "Ooh La La" and still have plenty of fans. However, The Seventh Tree isn't so much a radical change for Goldfrapp as it is a shift in focus; even if it doesn't sound glam, it sounds glamorous. Sonic luxury has been the only constant in the duo's sound, from Felt Mountain's darkly lavish soundscapes to Black Cherry and Supernature's decadent dance hits, and there's plenty of it here, too. This is not Goldfrapp Unplugged, although acoustic guitars and strings waft in and out of the album effortlessly -- if anything, The Seventh Tree's electro hippie-chic is the duo's most polished and luxe work yet. "Little Bird"'s psychedelic trip-hop builds to a majesty that recalls "Strawberry Fields Forever," buoyed by layer upon layer of guitar, vocals, sparkling synths, and a massive, rolling bassline. "Caravan Girl" is some of Goldfrapp's finest escapist pop, capturing the irresistible appeal of running away with big hooks and an even bigger Wall of Sounds backing them up. Allison uses her voice more beautifully and expressively than she has since Felt Mountain, especially on "Eat Yourself" and the Air-esque "Cologne Cerrone Houdini," where her upper register shines. Goldfrapp expands their emotional palette as well as their musical one on The Seventh Tree, digging deeper into the vulnerable territory they explored with Supernature's "Number One." On "Monster Love" and "A&E," where Allison confesses "think I want you still, but it may be pills at work," the duo pulls off the confessional, folktronic singer/songwriter style with more flair than their peers. "Happiness," on the other hand, offers some surprisingly cheeky irony, pondering how to find "real love" (answer: "donate all your money") while coming across like a cheery cult anthem about trading your worldly possessions for colorful robes. With all the sounds and feelings The Seventh Tree explores, it's clear that Goldfrapp doesn't miss the style the pair perfected on their last two albums, nor should they -- this is some of their most varied, balanced, and satisfying work.

Thankyou! However, is this a leak or a rip from the retail album? This mastering sounds way too hot (on the primitive system I'm currently listening to it on anyway), and I'm wondering if this is what I'm actually going to get if I buy the album.

I don't want to buy this and have to put up with Allison's vocals smushed into being one sample short of clipping.

Requiem for a Dream...that's the anime about the writer who gets caught up with three spirits who essentially do Death's work, right?

Maybe. It's also the Daren Aronofsky film about drug addicts living near Coney Island. It's one of the more terrifying movies I've seen but it has a brilliant OST written by Clint Mansel and performed by the Kronos Quartet.

The Powerpuff Girls: Heroes and Villains

Quote
Bubbles, Blossom, and Buttercup sure know how to pick 'em. Their Heroes & Villains might be the coolest soundtrack of the summer of 2000, as well as the best repellant for Townsville's evil monkey, Mojo Jojo. Inspired by the Cartoon Network's The Powerpuff Girls series, this delicious disc delivers a handful of exceptional contemporary pop-rock tunes customized especially for the occasion. And the music's so good that it may supersede the cartoon itself. Produced by Devo's Mark Mothersbaugh and Bob Casale, with fave groups picked by Powerpuff Girls creator Craig McCracken, Heroes & Villains has nary a clunker in its bunch. Disc highlights include the Beatles-like "Walk and Chew Gum" (Optiganally Yours), Komeda's killer "B.L.O.S.S.O.M.," Apples in Stereo's hook-infested "Signal in the Sky (Let's Go," Shonen Knife's hard-edged "Buttercup (I'm A Super Girl)," and a fun story thread that runs between songs. Of course there's Devo's own simian cheer lead, "Go Monkey Go," clearly another de-evolutionary breakdown at the hands of the mindless monkey Mojo. Play it again and again at maximum power.

Isis - Mosquito Control

Quote
With this EP, their second release, Isis starts really developing their own style of dense, down-tempo hardcore sludge metal with electronic accents, possessed screaming vocals, and a generally bleak atmosphere. Their songs tend to be on the long side -- between four and ten minutes apiece -- and in addition to that, they are clearly meant to flow together as part of a start-to-finish listening experience. (The conceptual feel of this EP is also highlighted by the lyrics, which use mosquito/insect references as a metaphor for a failed relationship.) "Hive Destruction" showcases the band's riff-writing abilities at their best and is arguably the highlight here, but the whole EP is solid and should please anyone into this band.

I've been neglecting this thread for far too long now, so here's one of my favorite 2008 releases so far, and one that's been growing on me.

Times New Viking - Rip it Off

Quote
AMG: Times New Viking aren't for the faint of ear. The trio from Ohio has no time for subtle recording tricks like EQ, proper levels, or fidelity. No doubt their recording budget hovered around the low two figures with most of that going toward beverages. The resulting album is a 30-minute blast of over-driven organ, squawking guitars, rattling drums, and pushed-to-distortion vocals that sound painful when played loud, and like a far-off hum when played quietly. Despite all this, Rip It Off is an incredibly good record. Maybe because of it, even. Beneath all the noise are songs with pretty melodies, huge hooks, and singalong choruses

Atlas Sound - Let the Blind lead those who can See but cannot Feel

Quote
TMT: No matter how you approach Let the Blind Lead, it is obvious that Bradford Cox knew exactly what he was doing when he sat down to make this album. The cover art portrays a skinny, faceless young boy being comforted by two adults. Once again, this leads me to believe these songs represent an introspective collection of feelings and emotions that needed a voice. What better way for Bradford Cox to show the world he has what it takes to put the gossipers to rest than to release an incredibly beautiful collection of songs? The only controversy he’s liable to stir up now is people talking about his remarkable new album and wondering whether or not he will be touring their city any time soon.

Also if anybody who was uploading Jazz before has any Django Reinhardt or Charlie Christian should totally upload them.

Great thread. I'm currently organizing my collection and thought I'd post some of my favorites. Probably not a lot of groundbreaking stuff, but at least I can provide some high-quality rips.

Badfinger - No Dice

This is one of my favorite pop/rock albums of all time. I could put "Believe Me" on repeat for hours and not get tired of it.

Apologizes ahead of time if I post something already in the thread. I'm hoping that using the search function will prevent this from happening.

no hotlinking! do what i did right there without the spaces and then you'll be doing it right.

or; there is a code button if you don't want to type that in. it looks like this # and it's right above the afro smiley. if you hover over the button it even says "Insert Code" so there's no excuse.

do it. that is a threat.

Also I would like to point out that the combination of Sailor Moon and faux-Kerouac / Sonic Youth spelling is perhaps the purest distillation of what this forum is that we have yet been presented with.

No amg cause there is none. Poo. But this is a really good post-rock album, especially if you don't dig the whole crescendo thing. I highly recommend you give this a look.

I love El Ten Eleven with a flamboyant passion.  I'll up their s/t album tomorrowish.

And I have an Abandoned Pools album that I'm gonna put up.  For those of you who don't know, they did some of the music (and the theme song) for Clone High.  I wish there was an official Clone High OST... /sigh

Jesse Sykes & the Sweet Hereafter - Reckless Burning

Quote
Taking what talents they've garnered from previous bands such as Hominy and Whiskeytown, lead singer Jesse Sykes and guitarist Phil Wandscher are onto something far bigger than the two could have foreseen. The opening title track lends itself as much to Margo Timmins as it does to a latter-day Lucinda Williams à la "Lonely Girls" in its almost morose tempo and arrangements, making the nearly seven-minute song glide along effortlessly and, to the listener, far shorter. The following numbers offer the same barren sounds, evoking images of members recording the songs in a log cabin. The well-trodden but solidly produced tracks never waver, especially "Doralee" and the slightly upbeat, honky tonk of "Lonely Hill." Resembling a trace of Neil Young's "Harvest Moon," the tune discusses heartbreak over a cross between Appalachian music and traditional country twang. "Don't Let Me Go" is another fine gem that doesn't stray too far from Sykes' strong points. While not having a dynamic range, she certainly knows what works. Only on "Drinking With Strangers," with its harmonies and backing instruments, does it sound a bit forced and too over-the-top. Returning to the melodic, swaying sound of "Love Me, Someday," the band is very well versed in a quasi dirge-country. A very sound and gentle series of heartbreaking vignettes makes this album so adorable.
