Mother of Pearl! Those MM albums have left me with exactly ZERO soxxx. Also, Ugly Casanova is Issac brock's (SP?) side project right?

Oh, and the punk prince album is bananas.

Uh Huh Her - I See Red EP
One of my favourite albums at the moment, I'm saving my pennies to get hold of the new full-length album on CD. Uh Huh Her are a female indie electro pop duo from LA, the music's really cute, relaxed and easy to listen to.

Code: [Select]
http://www.mediaf!re.com/?mn1nznfgdmd
Quote from: Last FM
The Los Angeles-based Uh Huh Her is the brainchild of musician/actress Leisha Hailey, formerly of alt-pop band The Murmurs, later reformed as Gush, who currently appears on Showtime’s hit series The L Word, and Camila Grey, bassist and keyboardist with lo-fi rock band Mellowdrone, who has also worked with Dr. Dre, Busta Rhymes, Melissa Auf der Maur, and Kelly Osbourne. Introduced through mutual friends, Hailey and Grey began making music together at the beginning of 2007, writing the emotionally charged electro-pop tunes that make up I See Red.

Ready to form another band after a five-year hiatus from music, Hailey went to see Grey perform with Mellowdrone. “I had been waiting to meet someone who had her talent and drive,” Hailey says. “After hanging out a couple of times, it was obvious we were a great match.” For her part, Grey says she was ready to leave behind session work and focus on a creative collaboration. “I’ve wanted to write and produce my own music, but was too busy touring as a background performer.”

The result of their efforts is I See Red, which was recorded over several months in a bedroom at Grey’s Los Angeles home. (“Vocals were done in the bathroom,” Hailey says, “it was very sexy.”) Produced by Grey and mixed by Al Clay (who has worked with the Pixies, Frank Black, and Blur), I See Red, with its laser-sharp melodies, ethereal harmonies, lush string arrangements, and muscular drums, is a great introduction to the duo.

She Wants Revenge - She Wants Revenge

Quote from: Last FM
She Wants Revenge is an American darkwave/rock band hailing from Los Angeles, California. The band is comprised of lead members Justin Warfield and Adam 12 and by accompaniment members TommySheWants and Scott Ellis.

They were signed by Fred Durst to his interscope imprint flawless records. However, as of Feb. 27th, 2008, She Wants Revenge now run their own record label called perfect kiss records.

She Wants Revenge draws inspiration from various bands including Bauhaus, Depeche Mode, New Order and The Sisters of Mercy. She Wants Revenge have been compared to Joy Division and Interpol in the music press. The latter of which is understandable as both bands draw influence from the baritone vocal range of Ian Curtis.

The band released two albums , first was the self-titled album ,wich hit the stores in 2006.’This Is Forever’ was the next album , wich was released in 2007.The band toured with Deepeche Mode and Placebo during 2006.They contribued to the track ‘Kindnap the Sandy Clauws’ wich was released in the compilation ‘The Nightmare Before Christmas Soundtrack’ in 2006.Next year , in 2007,She Wants Revenged was featured on the track Time , with Timbaland.

i think he meant mediaf!re with an 'i'

google hasn't quite updated for the fact that this board is different yet so this thread still comes up as a result titled "the mediaf ire thread!" but the link doesn't follow through. eventually it won't show up at all but that probably won't be for alittle while yet.

Yeah, that is what I meant. It'll probably be fixed over time, but I just thought I should point it out.

I feel I haven't contributed enough, lately.  So here's an EP by a band I saw open for Brand New and Anathallo a year ago.  They're really awesome, and are coming out with a new album in April which (according to the merch guy at the show a year ago) sounds kind of like Deerhoof, but without an Asian woman on vocals.

Anyways, enjoy:

Colour Revolt - Colour Revolt EP

In case you haven't heard it yet:

Colour Revolt - Plunder, Beg, and Curse

That merch guy was a filthy liar. It doesn't sound like Deerhoof at all! I am tempted to say it sounds kind of similar to the Constantines which is never a bad thing.

Robert Boyle, thanks for the new Bardo Pond.

Here is an old and basically impossible to find Nadja EP that I uploaded for a friend of mine. Probably the heaviest thing Baker has ever done; quite riff heavy and dark and ominous, highly recommended.

Some excellent post rock for you all today.

Wood and Wires was a Madison, WI band who made beautiful explosions / mono-esque music.  Sadly they are no more, but I would definitely recommend downloading this:

Wood and Wires -- s/t (although I'm not sure this is all of it...anyone else happen to have a full copy? let me know.)

I figure it's my turn to add something.

Miles Davis- Agharta

Code: [Select]
http://www.mediaf!re.com/?q60xjmxmmmcConsidered one of his best live recordings and done on the same day as Pangaea.  This was done in 1975, so it's one of Davis's fusion albums.

On the other end of the spectrum...

Park Ave.- When Jamie Went to London... We Broke Up

Code: [Select]
http://www.mediaf!re.com/?b1ggbzdjmpm
Conor Oberst's band before Bright Eyes.  It's a nice "indie pop" album with Conor on drums. The band also includes Clark Baechle (The Faint), Neely Jenkins and Jamie Williams (Tilly and the Wall), and Jenn Bernard (Magic Kiss, also Pretty Baby on the Domestica album cover).

Aluminium - Aluminium

Quote
Aluminium is the name of a music project based upon an orchestral reworking of the music of the band The White Stripes. Its members are Richard Russell and Joby Talbot. Jack White, of the White Stripes, has endorsed the project.
Rob Jones has also produced an exhibition of artwork based on the album.
The album, of avant-garde orchestral music, was originally conceived by Richard Russell and Joby Talbot. After working on some tracks - including "Aluminium" (the White Stripes' original from the album White Blood Cells retained the American spelling "Aluminum") and "I'm Bound to Pack it Up" - they presented the work to the White Stripes in Cincinnati.

heres somethin a little jazzy....

dZihan & Kamien - Live In Vienna

from allmusic:
Quote
The sound of Vienna-based duo dZihan & Kamien (pronounced Jay-hahn and Kammy-en) can easily be compared with the downtempo, soulful house sounds of Jazzanova, P'taah, or the Naked Music compilations. The duo hit popularity in 1996 with the single "Der Buch," which went big in European clubs and made appearances on several compilations.

If you like chill stuff like Thievery Corp, you'll probably enjoy this too. It's in two parts, cover is in the there.

This is the debut/self-titled EP of Sydney band, Bridezilla. I've been meaning to post this record for a while

Quote
Sydney quintet Bridezilla's exciting indie-folk sound has gained them an ever-growing army of admirers, and has seen music press tip them as the next big thing. All whilst still being teenagers! While they take influence from Cat Power and The Dirty Three, the refreshing truth is that Bridezilla stand out by the fact that they look and sound entirely different to any other band around right now. Led by vocalist Holiday, their energetic live show sees each member bringing individuality to the stage, as mesmeric violin and sax solos are woven through interesting and accomplished guitar work and drumming. A tasty new treat on the music scene.

This is the Dears first album (No Cities Left is their second) End of a Hollywood Bedtime Story.

Quote
With song titles such as "Where the World Begins and Ends," "There Is No Such Thing As Love," and "Jazz Waltz No. 3 in B-Flat," it's tempting to write off the Dears' debut release as a pretentious exercise in melodramatics. Granted, the decidedly melancholy subject matter serves to ensure that the appeal of End of a Hollywood Bedtime Story will remain limited. However, for fans of slightly skewed, introspective pop, there is much to recommend here. Lead singer and songwriter Murray Lightburn plumbed the emotional depths of his soul to create a kind of song cycle to lost love, heartbreak, and pain, reminiscent in lyrical and musical content to such diverse artists as Air, Belle and Sebastian, the Flaming Lips, and the Smiths. The most inspired moment occurs with the track "Heartless Romantic," where Lightburn, all but indecipherable as he sings through what sounds to be a broken megaphone, performs the equivalent of a nervous breakdown over a simple piano/organ line and a driving drum beat. While not a disc for anyone looking for instantly memorable tracks, End of a Hollywood Bedtime Story is one of those rare works that rewards the patient listener with each subsequent play.

Their 'experimental' EP Protest

Quote
The Dears - Protest is the concept mini-album for attention deficit disorder sufferers. 500 handmade copies of Protest were released in 2003, but the demand for the Canadian band's music is almost as high as the demand for Canadian pharmaceuticals, so Ace Fu Records re-released Protest late last year. The Dears were formed in 1995 by Murray Lightburn who has been the one constant since. They are endlessly compared to The Smiths and Blur and their full lengths do explore the same sonic territory, but Protest is a different matter.

The concept is nothing less than apocalyptic revolution and destruction and it all takes place in the course of three songs. The fulcrum of the album is "Summer Of Protest" and the musical cues come from The Doors "Five To One" and Joy Division. It's heavy and hypnotic and undeniably powerful. The Dears orchestral grandeur and bleak pomp on this disc could be the soundtrack of the next riot or just be a soundtrack. There is ambiguity in this art for just as you've decided to run off and join a movement, any movement against authority, the lyrics lead to "start up a revolution, revolution for fools" and the jackboot nightmare is only a shout away. The album finishes with "No Hope Before Destruction" and we're left with a description I once read of the ending of The 400 Blows - bleakness of the penultimate shot. There is no sweet and chewy center, only a piano flourish at the end that I wish would have become a boogie-woogie riff. That would have been some sweet irony.

Rolling Stone magazine has picked The Dears as a rock band to watch, but don't let that scare you away from experiencing them. Murray Lightburn and cohorts are definitely on to something. Eschatological music has never been this much fun.

Today's review was made possible by a grant from Soulfish Stew - go and get you some!

And Orchestral Pop Noir Romantique

Quote
With its convenient self-defining title – I don’t know about the orchestral part, but ‘pop noir romantique’ says it all – this disc arrived in rows stacked 10 thick at HMV stores in downtown Toronto and thus marked the start of the Dears ascent from local cultdom to indie superstardom (at least here north of the 49th). This 22-minute 4-song EP is chock full of the Dears brilliantly inked lilting, lamenting takes on love and romance.

And though it may lack the sheen of their stellar disc No Cities Left - Orchestral Pop Noir Romantique comes off as a less mature, more rough-hewn baby sister to its more grown-up LP sibling – it is no less stunning. For instance, ‘Heathrow or Deathrow’ opens with a decidedly grungy guitar placed high up in the mix and ‘Acoustic Guitar Phase is’, well, a somewhat lethargic acoustic Bowie-esque ballad. But it is on the other two tracks where the Dears finally begin to hone their sentimentality, especially on the delicate ‘No Return’, which works off a maudlin soap-opera piano riff and is then layered with guitar, flute and synth, the effect of which is absolutely brilliant. And then Murray Lightburn, with his trademark fragile/descending vocals, kicks in at the two-and-a-half-minute mark to make for one truly potent track.

Flawed yet still portentous, Orchestral Pop Noir Romantique is the sound of the Dears on the cusp of greatness, and as such the next step for those who may only be familiar with No Cities Left.

Please put the mediaf!re links into code using by using the code tags. Like this

[code ]mediaf!re link[/code ]

but without the spaces.

It stops people from being able to link the sharing of music to this site and is just generally better overall. It's stated at the top of every page in a big rules box so it would be nice if people paid attention sometimes. Kudos for the uploads but make sure you put them in the code tags next time.

Okay guys. Less chatty, more musicy.

Jurassic 5 - Power In Numbers

Quote
Like a few other notable sophomore records from hip-hop acts (De La Soul Is Dead, The Low End Theory), Jurassic 5's Power in Numbers is darker than their first full-length; not as fresh and exuberant, but much more mature and intelligent. Granted, fans may not be happy to hear they've changed the formula so soon, or that the production doesn't play a starring role as it did on Quality Control. Instead, DJ Nu-Mark and Cut Chemist play it close to the vest, setting off the rhymes with a few well-placed beats and split-second samples (as well as the usual flute loops). Of course, allowing more room to hear four of the best rappers in hip-hop twisting tongues and telling tales has to be welcomed, and Jurassic 5 prove up to the added responsibility. Displaying a focus and intensity basically unseen in rap music during the past decade, the group practically bursts with message tracks; the skeletal first single "Freedom" finds Chali 2na and Akil delving into the concept as it relates to everything from Third World poverty to the American penitentiary system. "Remember His Name" and "Thin Line" (the latter with Nelly Furtado) are dark tales of urban passions, and they're a step forward in that it's not just the raps that are intricate, but the storytelling also requires a few listens to understand. The group still has plenty of time for a few old-school anthems like "What's Golden" and "A Day at the Races," with Big Daddy Kane bringing his alliterative ammo to the track. And the instrumental jam "Acetate Prophets" shows DJ Nu-Mark and Cut Chemist refining their skill for merging turntablism and excellent productions. Perhaps the best statement of Jurassic 5's purpose comes from the group itself, on "If You Only Knew": "What we do is try to give you what you ain't used to."

Bedřich Smetana:  Má Vlast

1. Vyšehrad
2. Vltava
3. Šárka
4. Z českých luhů a hájů
5. Tábor
6. Blaník

Quote from: Wikipedia
Má vlast (traditionally translated as My Country or more literally My Fatherland) is a set of six symphonic poems composed between 1874 and 1879 by the Czech composer Bedřich Smetana. While it is often presented as a single work in six movements, and outside of Vltava almost universally recorded that way, the individual pieces were conceived as a set of individual works.

In these works Smetana combined the symphonic poem form pioneered by Franz Liszt with the ideals of nationalistic music which were current in the late nineteenth century. Each poem depicts some aspect of the countryside, history, or legends of Bohemia.

"Adagio for Strings" is a work for string orchestra, arranged by the American composer Samuel Barber from his first string quartet. It is Barber's most popular piece. In 2004, Barber's masterpiece was voted the "saddest classical" work ever by listeners of the BBC's Today program.

Instituto Mexicano del Sonido, which my computer and GIS insists on translating to the Mexican Instute of Sound are a dude who took to reviving the style of the throroughly kitsch music of 70s mexico along with electronic music. Surprisingly he managed to make it not suck! It is humorous but not "ironic". Fun but not "oh-so-quirky". Well produced but not artificial sounding.

also Metro Area. This is Morgan Geist and Darshan Jesrani and allmusic tells me that they avoid "any strict sense of stylistic pigeonhole, Metro Area's releases pay tribute to the bygone glory days of '70s and '80s boogie, old-school R&B, disco, and house; all the while keeping this timeless melting pot fresh with a modern edge that has skillfully avoided any trends that have coincided with the duo's existence." But really, all you need to know is that they make awesome music in the Italo Disco vein

Unclassics, which is either subtitled "obscure electronic funk & disco 1978-1985" OR  A Collection of Italodisco, Euroboogie & other sonic rarities mixed by Morgan Geist". and it is exactly that! You should all get it

Your rules confuse and scare me.

Really? They seem pretty easy to me…if you can read.

I am continually amazed by all the squawking that goes on in this thread about rules & etiquette. There must be 1000's of forums out there that don't care. If you choose to participate in this one, then isn't that a tacit agreement to abide by its rules?

Why don't you cry about it some more? Or I could call you a Waaaaaaaaaambulance if you'd like to help you feel better.
Please excuse my complete disregard for your forum's rules and regulations.

Man, thanks for the She Wants Revenge.  They're the only band I genuinely like while simultaneously thinking they are an elaborate, hilarious parody.

Don't bother making fun of me for it, I'm sure Malorie will have it covered if she sees this.

Yeah I've always thought those guys sounded too pretentious, but I've also always thought they were pretentious for comedic effect.  I never could figure out which one it was.

So I know this is a little late for the, uh, holiday, but you can use your leftovers from the big day and listen to this killer cover album.

Easy Dub All Stars - Dub Side of The Moon

Code: [Select]
http://www.mediafire.com/?guzm9zmaxji
From wikipedia:
Quote
Dub Side of the Moon is a dub reggae tribute to the Pink Floyd album, The Dark Side of the Moon, by the Easy Star All-Stars. Included with the liner notes are instructions on how to synchronize the album with the 1939 film The Wizard of Oz. The album has sold over 85,000 copies thus far and Easy Star All-Stars have been regularly touring in support of the album.

This is definitely one of the best Dark Side of the Moon cover albums, plus what could be better than merging pink floyd with reggae?
