Momo obviously needs a buoyancy compensator like that used by Motoko Kusanagi in the first Ghost In The Shell film.

I wonder if Momo could just download a swimming lesson and use it to negate any negative buoyancy she might have.

I don't think that physics of swimming work quite like that. IOW Momo cannot produce enough lift by any motion of her arms and legs to compensate for her negative net buoyancy.

We can swim because we have a bit of positive net buoyancy - at least when our lungs are full of air (many people, e.g. my wife, can just float on their backs without any swimming motion, but I cannot do that myself well enough to trust it). We can also drown, because that buoyancy is not enough to keep all of the heavy, bony head on top of the surface (and we eventually want to exhale temporarily losing that air filled cavity). My understanding is that swimming is mostly about bobbing near the surface and synchronizing our breathing with the bobbing motion.

So to be able to swim, Momo would need to have an inflatable cavity/bag/balloon inside her body. Probably judged not to be useful enough to be worth the effort (given that she is not in dire regular need of oxygen).

  • First I lol'd. But then I serious'd.

That brings up the point of how heavy her chassi actually is.
She could maybe produce enough lift by whirling her arms or by having a sort of extendable propeller but it would be quite dangerous for anyone around her, I imagine. Turning the water around her into a malstrom or something.
Anywho, apparently it´s easier to just walk along the bottom of the lake.

Well i suppose this also answers all those questions about if she can stand water, Along with the earlier time when she had a shower. that said if that happened to me i'd probably be terrified.

Not very, apparently -- or at least when compensated by the water.  We know from Steve that the depth at that point is enough for an adult to stand on the bottom with head above water, so in the last panel Marten's standing on the bottom and pulling her up. BUT Momo's not THAT short... if she was able to stably walk upright on the bottom with the water completely covering her head far enough so no floating hair gives her away, Marten would have had to be free-floating above, and noodle or no noodle he would not be able to just lift her with his arm, but rather he'd have been dragged under.

We know from Steve that the depth at that point is enough for an adult to stand on the bottom with head above water, so in the last panel Marten's standing on the bottom and pulling her up.

Steve was standing on a rock (or turtle!), and Momo appeared without her head above water; but your logic is right, that if she can pull herself up using Marten's buoyancy, then she can't be much heavier than water.  But enough to thoroughly unsettle Marten's equilibrium, both mechanical and mental.

Well, all we need is a height comparison with Momo and Steve.

This strip has a good comparison height between Marten and Momo. But then again, with that comparison, how could Marten pull Momo out of the water like that given her height, depth of water, and weight?

She doesn't have much volume: even being denser than a human, she might not weigh enough for a healthy adult to lift.

But this is Marten we're talking about, who can't even hold up Hannelore.

If she were physically strong enough she could keep herself above water.

I've seen her do it in both fresh water and salt water (or the Baltic Sea, which passes for salt water over here, but does not have the salinity of an ocean). She is near the petite end of the feminine spectrum, so that does not play any role. May be her lung volume to body volume ratio is advantageous? May be my problem is that I'm a moutbreather, whereas she only needs to have her nostrils a quarter of an inch above the surface. Nah, she is just better swimmer than I will ever be.

The sheer number of friends of mine who didn't "get" that this was an original attempt at humor and not a blazing callback to something else astounds me.

I thought my peeps were far more "original minded" than that.    Clearly I need to murder them all, sell their stuff on ebay and acquire new friends.

SCIENCE ALERT!! SCIENCE ALERT!!

Actually, the reason why you can float easier on salt water than fresh water is the salt. Because salt water is heavier and denser than fresh water, many things can float much easier than normal.

Or to put it bluntly, look up images of folk floating in the Dead Sea, one of the saltiest bodies of water out there. They float much higher in the water than normal beach goers in the rest of the world.

She walked into the water, walked along the bottom of the lake, and when she got to Marten, grabbed his arm and "jumped" up.

I don't think that physics of swimming work quite like that. IOW Momo cannot produce enough lift by any motion of her arms and legs to compensate for her negative net buoyancy.
I'm sure she could, but it would be very wasteful of energy. I was once challenged to demonstrate that I could swim 50m wearing a 4.5kg diver's weight-belt without a wet-suit or any other buoyancy/swimming aid. The weight was easily sufficient to allow me to stand on the bottom of the fresh-water swimming pool; flat-footed, completely submerged, with full lungs. I had no difficulty passing the test, but I had to work much harder than normal to stay close enough to the surface to breathe. With sufficient power, I'm sure Momo could swim, but the battery drain would be much greater than just walking along the bottom.

This is the kind of thing that I'd tend to assume pretty much everyone knows...
Anyway a fun and simple experiment to show the phenomenon to kids, is to put an raw chicken egg in fresh water: it sinks (hopefully - if it doesn't, it means it's rotten). Add salt to the water, the egg floats.
