I want a tele with two mini-hums in it. Either that, or some combo of mini-hum and p90. Bigsbys are always good. I installed one on my $199 fake-LP-style and it's great. I like the Bigsby sound even better than the trem on my Jaguar. (I know it's really a vibrato.)

we'll never know. she's one of those Japanese 'lawsuit' guitars, and all I know about her is that she's from the late '60s and the brand is El Degas.

Ahh, gotta love the Lawsuit guitars. I have an Epiphone ripoff of a Strat from the 90's.

I had to replace the pickups, re-solder etc, but it sounds pretty good for a $50 guitar (with $300 of replacement hardware... :/ )

I've seen the first 2 of those before, but that last one, I haven't seen. On a display hanger of Fretted Friends, the guitar shop in my town that closed almost ten years ago, there used to be a Martin electric (I know, right?) shaped like an M-16 that had 2 humbuckers. It looks like this one has the pickup switch in the trigger, which the Martin also had.

Damn, now I really miss that place. It's been turned into a pizza slices joint now.

Ah man, I hated the Les Pauls I played, the neck felt awful and the body was way too heavy on the shoulder. And if I put on my vanity glasses, I've never seen a colour other than black that I like them in.

My housemate says it played like any other until he got it set up. I have played copies before and not cared for them but this... This was wondrous, and not that heavy either.

A good set-up really will change a guitar I admit, but I have never been a great fan of Gibson's in general, RD aside. My subconscious also always associates Les Pauls with 80's hair metal guitar solo's, and in their music video's they'll be playing them outside of churches in the desert, or on their knee's in the rain etc.

I am aware that a lot of my favourite bands use them too though.

Jeff Buckley made me like Tele's, but I think they need to have a decent set of pups, they can risk sounding a bit too weak for me, or sometimes too bright. My favourite shape is a Jaguar, which is why I own one.

Well guess I'll have to find a well set up LP to have my perceptions changed. But honestly, why did Gibson discontinue the RD? Such a sexy guitar... and all I want is a Ghost signature model.

haha, well, my point was that the guitar itself sounds like it's gonna rip the flesh clean away from your face. btw Hughie Flint is a fucking beast on the drums in every last one of those, and that's John McVie on bass, who later went on to co-found Fleetwood Mac.

oh and in case blues didn't sell you, how about Les Paul himself, who designed it in collaboration with Gibson to play jazz? he made sparklingly beautiful dulcet tones come out of the instrument that would become Clapton's warhorse for that legendary record shown in part above

Well I sure do like all those songs, and I haven't listened to John Mayall in years, the guitar sounds is indeed gorgeous. It has always been the feel of a Les Paul that I didn't like, and what it became in the late 80's and early 90's.

But then a band like Kyuss used Les Pauls, and I fucking love that guitar tone

Well his sound changed massively from Cream to solo, he should have used the right tool for the job, and if he really wanted to play a strat, he could have used an HSS or an HSH.

I mean don't get me wrong, I love Strats in the right context. and he nailed it on "Layla" And Other Love Songs. but he rarely got it right again after that.

Argh I'm not entirely sure I can agree, I like a lot of his solo work, and I do love the clean sound of a strat, John Frusciante got some great tones out of it to my ears.

For me though, Cream was his best work, and his greatest guitar sound. I haven't really taken much notice of Blind Faith before, though I know my Dad has a few of their LPs.

Let's put it this way: If I had $3500, I would pay for a Bogner Uberschall. If I had $1800, I would pay for that nice 1967 Deluxe Reverb one of my local GCs has sitting in a room somewhere.

I wouldn't pay for a Les Paul Custom. I'd probably just get a guitar built to my specifications by a smaller builder.

His 80s output wasn't too bad. He dipped in the late 70s, and the 90s is a blur to me, but I thought Journeyman sounded pretty good.

Best Strat players for getting a beefy sound tend to be Froosh, Eric Johnson and Simon Neil to me.

For me it's the neck that i like so much, they feel so comfortable in my hand and on my fingers, and I'm a bit of a fender fanboy, so keeping it in the family is always a bonus for me. I also love the sounds from the SLX series.

I guess it could make a difference, maybe not from one high end battery brand to another high end brand, but certainly between a cheaper one and a more expensive one if they are giving different, or more consistent output of power. Maybe it wouldn't change the tone so much as the power behind the tone?

I'm pretty sure if I had Cliffs of Dover money, all my batteries would be high-end. And I'd eat branded cereals cos I can.

Those are the most singularly pretty batteries I've ever seen, and want them, although have little use for 9Vs. Need to grow the pedal board.

Ehhh. Fuzz Faces (Especially old ones like he uses) actually work better with the shitty carbon batteries you can at a dollar store because they respond nice to being slightly under-charged. For almost anything else it REALLY doesn't matter.

This is why I wish I had a germanium big muff and a voltage knob. the germanium OD is already awesome, but gets too extreme far too fast and is wildly climate dependent and doesn't work well at all with a 9v adapter

And honestly, the only Les Paul I've ever played that made me think "this would be a great addition to my life" was my old teacher's '82 ebony. Played smooth as silk and sounded about as close to perfect as you could hope to get. Other than that, I don't consider Les Pauls to be that impressive.

In the end, the only Gibson that I'd really go out of my way for would be an Explorer E2. One came through a local music store here last year, and I was utterly in love. Then someone bought it, and left an Explorer-shaped hole in my blackened heart.

I'm working on installing the roller bridge I just got in the mail. Here's hoping this alleviates a lot of the tuning stability issues I've gotten since installing the Bigsby.
