Would "No one" be a good option for this poll? A bit cruel to Claire, sure, but... Or is that covered by the waffle/spathe ham alternatives? I thought that waffles are covered in maple syrup and spathe ham is covering a thandwith, but whatever.

Clinton noticing and commenting would be nice, as he's the only other character other than Marten who knows she's transitioning. He might go all proud sibling and give her a big hug. He wouldn't have to say out loud why it's such a big deal, just show her and give her a bit of the kudos she's asking for.
Marten's been great going with her to have the piercing done, and his physical presence is supportive... but he's been pretty mute. He literally hasn't said much!

Originally, when Veronica first met Claire, here, she gave her the "I WANT GRANDKIDS!" speech, which the fans took as a little insensitive for the obvious reason.

Anyway, honestly, Claire should know better than to expect anyone but Marten (at this point, even Marten, really) to see this as a big deal...? Tai and Faye must be confused as hell right now.

If Emily heard Claire talking about getting her ears pierced, then she would know that Claire had been scared. If she knew or remembered about that, then she would probably have complimented her on her bravery.

At worst, she's self-absorbed. At best, she's clueless. What's more likely is that she's in between and just doesn't pay as much attention to her friends as she should. I usually don't mind Emily. I think she's sweet and interesting most of the time. But this just ... bothers me.

not necessarily; claire could have been thinking about it in the abstract at that point, with real anxiety only appearing once perforation became imminent.

also, i don't know much about body-piercing, but don't fresh ones get swollen up and bleed for a while?

Only if you don't properly care for them and they become infected (or, at least certainly not with ears). If they're swollen and bleeding, you need to get to a doctor to deal with the fact that you have an infected wound.

You've got it completely wrong. Jeph changed his mind on it almost immediately after uploading it because he wasn't comfortable with it. He didn't intend for the punchline to be "Haha! She can't have kids, so this'd hurt her!", so he changed it so it wouldn't be read like that.

Also, if that had been the case, there's nothing wrong with not being a jerk and listening to people.

Edit: Found his post on it. Basically more of Jeph being awesome.

Clairexplosion in 3... 2.... I would start running faster if I were you, Marten... Nah, honestly I see Claire being more the sort to just seethe angrily for a while. Which kinda goes against the 'red heads have violent tempers' stereotype. And I don't think Emily was being malicious. This would be high level meanness and she just hasn't shown that. It would be well within behavior that she's shown in the past though to hear only part of Claire's conversation and just randomly go "Oh, she's getting her ears pierced? I'll go get mine done too!" Either not sticking around to hear how nervous Claire was about it, or just not thinking about it if she did.

Claire's been talking about it on her Twitter for quite some time now. I just looked at hers for the first time the other day, and I saw Tweets about being scared about ear-piercing all the way back to July of this year. There are probably some that are from earlier, but that was as far as I felt like going.

I take Jeph at his word that he acted based on what he wanted. Supporting evidence is that he didn't make changes when poly people got offended about Tai being unfulfilled with polyamory, or when he got complaints that Claire's life is not showing the horrors often visited on trans people.

Poor Claire, how frustrating! Lets hope Tai doesn't try to comfort her with the 'imitation is the sincerest form of flattery' line. That one never calmed me down!

As for Emily, my gut instinct was to be angry at her... a similar thing happened to me with hair dye at school. But she honestly has no idea what she's done. Even if someone tried to explain it to her I'm not sure she'd grasp it. Trying to make parallels with the pea-pun incident might do it, but I was never entirely sure what Emily was reacting to in that run. Did Claire steal her punch line or ruin the experience of eating the peas with a pun she hadn't thought and couldn't reproduce?

I don't agree - you don't have to be trans for piercings to be a big deal. I was extremely excited and pretty nervous when I got mine done, and I'm cis. It's not an a=b not a=not b situation, and we've seen nothing in the comic which indicates that Claire was nervous or excited simply because she's trans (how does that even work? Does being trans make your ear lobes more sensitive?).

This is someone with an Ativan prescription. Pre-existing anxiety is the best explanation for why it was so difficult for her.

I agree with Barmymoo. It can be a big deal for no big complicated reason at all. A lot of girls get their ears pierced at certain stages, for example many as teens at 14/15/16 as a coming of age thing (where I grew up anyway)... maybe one girl in a friendship group will and then others will follow suit. I left it because I couldn't be bothered, so by the time I did get them pierced - about Claires age - it was a big deal. Not because I had a nervous personality, or because I had a big reason not to get it done before like being trans. But just because I'd left it ages and was finally getting it done! I could wear matching earring necklace sets for the first time! People could buy me earrings they thought would suit me!

My friends, and my mum in particular, made a huge deal out of it because they were my friends and were happy for me.
No reason Claires friends wouldn't be just as thrilled for her regardless of their knowledge of her personal circumstances.

If you're referring to my post about Emily being insensitive, then I apologize.

It honestly rubbed me the wrong way because it was very clearly a sensitive subject for Claire. It bothers me when people take things that are important to others and completely ignore their significance.

She doesn't pay as much attention as she should. That doesn't mean she's a terrible person. As Akima said, she just needs to step out of her "me-bubble." I really don't mean anything against Emily. Even Tai told Claire that she'd done a good job. Emily jumped straight to "we" as soon as she saw Claire's. She didn't give Claire a "me" moment in her conversation with her, even though she started off with her own "me" moment. I have no doubt that Emily would gasp and apologize and feel bad if she were told politely about jumping ahead without thinking about Claire's personal experience.

But if she were told right away, then it wouldn't create drama, and then it wouldn't be as interesting from a comic standpoint, so Claire probably won't say anything until after she's brooded for a bit and accidentally made Emily wonder what she did wrong.

If you weren't referring to me, then I'm sorry for jumping the gun. But I do think my point stands, regardless.
