The characters are enough like real people and there are enough forumites that it's guaranteed a character will remind at least one forumite of an old enemy regularly. Add the artistic need to include conflict and the human tendency to take sides.

Wow, character development!

Sven is like several of my old enemies, but with a soul and the specter of a chance for self improvement.

Nice bounce back though Claire, very cute.

At school, I used to be like Emily about maths-tests ("They're easy! They're fun! You don't have to write essays!"). She just isn't thinking outside the me-bubble.

I...I...I wish I had met a girl like you in high school.

And I still lapse inside a me-bubble in situations like this.

"The Abbott to her Costello" doesn't really feel right to me, given the personalities. "The Laurel to her Hardy" might be closer. "The Chico to her Groucho" might be even closer. (I don't see an obvious Harpo, but Marten's clearly the Zeppo....)

Hmm... Didn't angus just pull the same gag on Faye that she did on Claire like three comics ago? The punchline is vaguely different, but both times the joke boils down to 'intentionally observing and commenting on the wrong thing after they draw attention to the thong they are proud of.'

Fortunately Faye's badge says Assistant Manage, and not Ass.Man.(See the 6teen episode "Employee of the Month" for details.)

As far as Emily goes I wonder if she isn't somehow aware of Claire's situation.  Just a feeling I get from her telling Claire she looks up to her.

I find the lack of cleavage to be disturbing. With a shirt that low cut, it makes me picture faye as just having a single odd lump for boobs. Or combined with the scar at first glance, one big boob and one that's 1/10th the size of the other one.

I don't think Emily spends a lot of time thinking about gender. Also, I don't think Jeph makes every single thing that is relating to Claire a subtle reference to her being trans. Now that the arc where she comes out to Marten has finished, she is just a girl in the strip unless and until something happens which brings the subject up again (but part of me doubts it'll ever come up again, to be honest). That doesn't mean it's not a constant part of her life, but she is on the whole in a safe space around people she trusts who aren't obsessed with her gender, so why would it constantly be part of the plot?

I don't think it's that clear cut.

In http://questionablecontent.net/view.php?comic=2426 commenters did not see her as "just a girl", and I'm pretty sure they have a good point.  So does that count as "bringing the subject up again"?

It's a slippery slope ... if that does count as "bringing the subject up again", what does not?  Where do you draw the line?  Who gets to draw the line?

Faye doesn't appear to be wearing a bra, unless it's a balcony style strapless one, so it's not strange she doesn't have cleavage. Although not every bra makes for cleavage either.

I wonder if we'll see more of Faye and Angus tomorrow, discussing what her promotion might mean if he gets the job he wants, assuming he hasn't got it already.

Fortunately for Claire, the QCVerse is pretty idealistic (the people she interacts with are pretty chill about most things, and while everybody has their dramas, nobody really is going to knife them in the back over it (or worse)). The only two people who (so far) know about Claire's transition is Marten and Clinton, and both would rather dive into a shark tank wearing a meatsuit than see her hurt. Besides, I don't think Jeph is going to be THAT insensitive:

Quote from: Jeph from comic #2426
I've done a fair bit of research into trans issues while writing Claire, and probably the saddest and most frightening thing is how often trans people are victims of violence. As a straight white dude it is something entirely outside my experience, and learning about it has been sobering. Stay safe and be kind to each other, everybody.

On comic: Stay classy, Angus :)

Many people wish they do, GM. I mean, music and politics beside (and I appreciate both of those from her), I've read interviews that make me think she would pretty much just be a chill person to hang out with.

I can appreciate that not everything involving Claire revolves around her being trans, but the fact that she is trans does have a subtle affect on her everyday life. In many comics that feature or star a transgender or transformed character those gender issues and issues surrounding transitioning are often if not always in the fore front. Which is fine, as that is what those stories are about. Jeph on the other hand takes a more relaxed approach, I guess is the best way to describe it? Since Claire is only one character in the story, and her transition/transgender nature is not the most prominent part of her character, how Jeph is writing her I understand and appreciate.

I very much see Claire in a position that I am in... Years into transition my gender issues are not the biggest thing in my life, but they are always there, quietly part of everything I do. That is how Claire seems to me, at least.
