I want to believe so badly that it is completely legit, and it looks like it could be. I haven't seen that many 'shops in my time, and someone else might be able to tell from the pixels (or from actually knowing photography), but it looks like he set up about a dozen sparklers beforehand, lit them one at a time and traced them across the image he had in his mind, one per smooth curve. You can see the lighter in his hand, and the trails from the sparklers as they're dropped, at the end of their life, to the ground, where you can see a few bounce before they burn out entirely. Judging that the life of a sparkler is about 30 seconds, it was probably about a 10-minute exposure, with the last (or first) few minutes occupied by him just standing in the center stock-still.
I'm not sure why I care so much about this particular picture and its "realness," especially considering my usual lurkiness, except that it's past 3am here, and I have homework I should be doing. Thanks for the distraction, internet!
