Those tie wallets would be amazing, if you could match them them to your tie & pocket square, that would be just super.

Yeah those are pretty cool! And you can send in your own tie for a custom one, which is awesome.

Here are some more I found that are kind of cool: a bunch of cool billfolds, seatbelt wallet, Wolverine wallet, and some cool trifolds.

Sorry I am responding to a post from two pages ago, plus it's off-topic, but I am just now catching up on stuff I haven't read yet. You guys, do be aware that if someone steals your debit card number and charges a bunch of stuff on it you're out the money. With a credit card you can dispute fraudulent charges, with a debit card you are SOL.

That is one of the advantages of credit cards that I was talking about. Some credit cards also have things like travel insurance, which is also one of them. But what pilsner said is correct if you've got a decent enough bank. And it's really quick to close off access to the account via the card, so if someone steals your wallet, that's generally the first thing you'll want to do (I've got my wallet in my pocket about 90% of the time when I'm out, so I'd notice quickly). Oh, and keeping two bank accounts in addition to the saving account(s), and using a debit card for only one of them, is something I've been doing which is pretty practical. It also makes the spending more noticeable, as you have to transfer money to the spending account, and you can tell much better how quickly that gets empty, so you get a better sense of money going out, like Emaline was talking about with cash. That also leaves a very limited amount to be stolen.

No, Joe, that's generally not correct.  Of course it will depend on your bank, but most debit cards have maximum daily withdrawal limits.  Moreover if your account has been fraudulently charged, most banks will return the money.  If you are curious, ask someone at your bank.

That must be a new regulation, that didn't used to be the case last time I checked, but then that was a long time go. And yeah debit cards do have maximum withdrawal limits, but you're still out the $500 or whatever that's the limit. I mean, you would be out that if the bank didn't return the money, which like I said must be a new regulation.

And it's really quick to close off access to the account via the card, so if someone steals your wallet, that's generally the first thing you'll want to do (I've got my wallet in my pocket about 90% of the time when I'm out, so I'd notice quickly).

Most people seem to think having your card stolen is the main danger but every time I've had my credit card number stolen I still had the card and found out because of the credit card company calling me to check about a suspicious charge. If you think about it, a lot of uses of credit cards just rely on faith that your waiter won't steal your number or whatever. (I'm not saying to become paranoid about that mind you; I use my credit card to pay for pretty much everything, including lots of meals out.)

Those wallets are all pretty bad, but the power lines and tie ones are the best. The rest are either hella childish, or don't close.

But those kinds of things most banks – here, at least – will cover, afaik. I haven't heard of anyone here who haven't had that kind of stuff covered, while I have heard of a lot of people who have. I guess it's just about weighing the upsides vs the downsides.. Using a debit card is not 100% safe, but neither is carrying money (you lose your wallet, you lose the money – if you lose the wallet with a card, most likely you'll be able to close off the card without anything happening). And withdrawing money requires using ATMs, and there have been plenty of cases where people get their card info stolen from skimming devices on ATMs. Not that I never use one, but I try to be careful when I do. And I rarely eat places where the waiter will have to handle my debit card, most places I eat at either take the payment at a counter or use portable payment terminals. I'll definitely consider (and probably will be) getting a credit card when I'm no longer a student and see situations where one might come in handy, but debit cards are definitely also worth considering if you can't or don't want to get a credit card.

I don't think they're dumb. Quirky, yes, but not dumb. There was one on there that was a red wine stained leather one that was really quite nice, but he said he didn't like leather, which narrows things down a bit for men's wallets. A dumb wallet would have Robert Pattinson's face on it. Like these. Now those are dumb.

But really, I got my current wallet at a comic store. (That I got when I was hanging out with forumites in Boston.) Find a shop you like that sells accessories and get one there if you don't want to get one online.

Hockey clothes will not cut it, it is a hockey dinner and therefore hockey kit is about the most day-to-day, informal thing ever!

I was looking it up on the internet and got even more worried when I saw that Oxbridge balls were being cited as examples of what to wear to black tie events. If I am going to be a fashion guru I have to actually get it right!

I think I'm going to have to wear the one ball gown type dress I own, and then buy another one for the summer balls. GAH I was trying to avoid doing that! But I'm going to the ball with the hockey team too so they would recognise the same dress twice (I'll ask some people whether that's a faux pas or not).

Sometimes I wish I'd gone to Chester to do advertising and media, like I'd always planned.

Liberty Fabrics.
Liberty Shirts.

They're not the company they used to be, sadly; nor are they the Liberty that Mill had in mind, I think.

I LOVE liberty print, I have re-made all my mums old dresses that she was smart enough to keep. I always get asked about them when I wear them.

May, is it 'true' black tie? Like, is this a gowns and tux affair? Or are they just using the phrase to say 'formal'?

Formal as you can, try and find a nice basic solid colour dress that is elegant and is more about flattering you than about the dress itself. Minimize jewelry, wear your hair up.

I think to black tie on a budget, or for the not extremely fashionably inclined, is to really look for elegance and simplicity. You can really go all out and really be bold and dramatic, but it's very easy to screw up and look like a moron. So I'd recommend going for something simple, black, slim, and either to the knee or ankle length-gown.

In this kind of situation I think it's better to find a dress that looks great on you and is elegant, than to find that 'fabulous' dress.

Well, nice dress is pretty ambiguous but you most definitely have to wear a tux. A suit is semi-formal.

"Formal Wear" is dinner jacket territory for men. There is no real room for debate there.

A nice evening gown should do the trick for women both if they actually mean "Formal" or "Nice dressy clothes".

When I hear the term "black tie" for any event I may be going to I just grab the nicest clothing items I own, match them up the best I can, and slap them on and pray to god somebody's dressed worse than me.

Usually my prayers are answered by some gross-looking couple who completely lost touch with reality about 30 years ago.

So should I go with the dress I wore to a party with the same people recently:

because it is black, and wear some kind of shawl around it,

or is it better to go with the purple, longer sort of chiffon ballgown that I was saving to wear to a ball with the same people? It has straps and I think I would feel more comfortable in it, but it is purple.

I would love to go shopping and buy a new dress but I really don't have time today :(

Do you have a different belt or some bright tights you could wear to change the look of it? That's a great dress as wel, I could think of a whole ton of ways to wear it!.

Also Black Flag logo ripped off in serveral ways, I don't totally hate them: http://giveemtheboot.bigcartel.com/. Would you automatically hate someone wearing one of these T shirts? (I know hate is strong word, just work with me here....) I can't make my mind up!

Do not wear brightly coloured tights with that dress, that would be fine for a semi formal or a party with your friends but it is not appropriate for a black tie event.

May, how bright purple is this dress? I'm leaning towards it because longer is generally easier to make formal, but the black dress would be entirely fine, in fact lovely. Whoever said asking the girls on your team was entirely right.

The only colored tights/hose to wear with that to black tie is either black or skin tone. But I'm leaning towards the purple dress simply because it's longer. Really either would be fine, but usually longer dresses are more formal, but yeah, ask the other girls too.

I think I'm going for the purple dress :) It's not bright, it is defintely intended to be a formal dress. So far I've asked two girls what they're wearing; one has said "the black dress I always wear" and she is correct, she wears the same black dress regardless of the event because she only owns one dress, and the other said "I have no idea yet". Purple it is!

Now for hair, or do I have to change threads for this? I'm thinking up on a sort of elegant bun, is that about the right tone?

Also Black Flag logo ripped off in serveral ways

So I know this guy Jacob who I've decided has my favorite Black Flag ripoff shirt ever.

(it is the camera phone picture that most perfectly captures the wild hipster in his habitat--at a punk rock show, with a pbr pounder, and a beard with lots of tattoos showing.)

Also May, a nice sleek low bun would be perfect probably. I haven't seen the dress but yeah, it's a classic simple updo that'll look nice.

Yeah, simple low bun is pretty easy, there's another one that is super easy that I could do a tutorial for you if you want something that looks a bit more complicated but isn't. But if you're not up to either task of putting up your hair, you could just do a nice loose romantic 'down' hair style if you wore a hair clip with curls or something.

Oh what do you know I have a use for this thread awesome

So! I have a bit of a dilemma. This weekend, an annual event commemorating the founding of my college will occur. In previous years, the event has been a strictly formal-dress occasion. This year, however, the college has decided to change the angle a bit and celebrate the college's history and indulge everyone's retro-fetishism by making it a '70s themed event. The recommended dress code, therefore, is formal or "'70s threads." Now, the adverts and assorted other things leading up to the event have been pushing pretty heavily the disco/funk angle, but I don't want to spend money on a leisure suit or any of that nonsense, so I was thinking of DIY-ing myself up some tattered punk clothes. I should probably consult with someone else I know who's going too, but at this very moment I am unable to do so, so I'm asking the fashion thread: would this be acceptably contrary/punx, or am I just being a party pooper?

Edit: Having thought about it for a minute I am pretty close to concluding that going punx is the only acceptable outcome.

So I know this guy Jacob who I've decided has my favorite Black Flag ripoff shirt ever.

I literally just applauded.

Guys I do not know what to wear to my gig in L.A. on Sunday. It's at a church (playing with a gospel choir, WHO KNEW?) and I don't exactly have anything really nice right now.

I am basically trying to decide whether to wear a button-down shirt + tie or a button-down shirt with a nice sweater over it.

For bottoms, my only choice is skinny jeans. All my normal-fitting jeans are fucked up and my slacks are too short in the leg.

What I'm saying is "Oh fuck I have nothing at all what's the best I can do" and I will be posting photos tomorrow.

Sweater. With the skinny jeans, you will be some kind of hipster/choir combo.

Yeah dude, sweater. Don't wear a tie without a jacket and definitely don't wear a tie with jeans.

(it is the camera phone picture that most perfectly captures the wild hipster in his habitat--at a punk rock show, with a pbr pounder, and a beard with lots of tattoos showing.)

Yeah, that works for me, I would try to touch your friend Jacob, he pulls that shirt off good.
