Paisley rules, true facts, don't even try to hate.

When it's inside a jacket where it belongs, it is pretty cool.

RE - Anna's shoes. Those are fine. If I saw Anna wearing those I would not even look twice. They look the same as any other white trainers I have ever seen.

Jace, you can get away with a dark sportcoat and trousers that are not necessarily matched, and sometimes if you are trying to look haplessly academic try a navy blazer with khaki pants and a red tie, but a suit is basically what they mean. Go to the thrift store! Also, if you can't find a thrift store, go drop some money on a suit at a regular store. It will pay off, I promise.

I think you might be able to get away without a suit jacket if you are spiffed up otherwise. The office I worked at this fall was business casual, and most of the guys didn't even wear ties. But of course, err on the side of formality. That probably doesn't help you much, actually, but here are Virginia Tech's guidelines.

Unless you're applying for a 'hip' job, like at a cafe or a trendy clothing store, or something like that. Use your common sense. But generally a good rule to follow is to go one half or one full step more formal that what you would be wearing as dress code.

For example if you dress casual for a job then you'll probably want to wear business casual for the interview.

Well, the woman who called me to ask me to come in for an interview told me that the dress code was buisness professional, so I've got to make some calls back home and get some money so I can go buy a suit jacket (I only have like $4 on me). I've got quite a few pairs of slacks, dark navy blue and black mostly, white, light cream, and striped blue/white button ups, my uncle has a bunch of ties (I didn't pack any of my ties for some reason), I really just need to find an inexpensive coat or two that can last me for a month or two. Also, I've not seen any thrift stores when I've been walking and driving around this place.

Man, faulting Brooks Brothers for not being Brioni is pretty harsh. I mean, Brioni is the sort of company that charges $90 for a pocket square and calls it a sale. Their suits are unquestionably dapper, but at 5 grand for off the rack they better be.

I walk past a sort of posh gentleman's outfitters every day on my way between town and my college, and ever so often I am taken aback by the "£165 off" signs in front of the suits. I have never dared set foot in there; when I had to buy a gown, I bought it through college and they placed the order for me. Actually walking through the door would be terrifying.

Yeah, what Emaline said. I have a Visa, but it's a debit version or whatever, and it's excellent. I basically use it for everything, almost never carrying cash anymore, and I have used it online a ton.

There are advantages to credit cards, I guess, but a debit card should work just fine?

I just find cash a bit cumbersome, probably because I'm used to using my debit card for everything, and something requiring cash payment ends up being a hassle. But yeah, cash makes my wallet too bulky to fit comfortably into pockets, it requires actually having to withdraw (sorry for the deposit, I always mix those up) money beforehand (why not just pay with the card in the store instead?) and it takes longer at the store because the cashier has to count the money. And with decent bank deals, where you don't get fees for payments, it's a pretty sweet deal. Sure, there are security concerns, but I'm careful and the banks cover most losses anyways.

Pretty much the only stuff I pay in cash unless I for some reason have received cash from someone else, is the occasional bus fare when my bus card is expired or soda from soda machines :/

ETA: Which sites only accept credit cards? I have never run into that problem. I know banks here won't give people under 18 a normal Visa (debit), but they'll get a Visa Electron, which doesn't allow for online shopping, but which still works as a debit card for regular stores and in a lot of foreign places too.

Sean, I prefer cash. I typically carry cash. I feel like I am more aware of my money this way because I can physically see it getting depleted.

Tommy, I'm pretty sure most banks requirement for debit cards is that you have an account or are 18. And I've never come across a site that wouldn't let me use my debit card. Most debit cards/banks go through a major credit card company, and most sites only require that it be a Visa or Mastercard, etc. I do a lot of online shopping and I've never come across this problem, other than sites that are paypal only.

Keep in mind in the US Debit networks run on Visa and MasterCard backbones. Functionally they are exactly like credit cards, the main diff is the funding source for the cust and the fees for the merch. Funding source on US debit cards is a checking account, whereas a credit card can carry a balance.

In other places 'debit' has a different meaning. For example in Canada debit cards run on a network called Interac. I do believe in other locales Sirrus and Maestro cards are usable most places MasterCards are usable but I dont know as much about them. One thing to consider are things like GreenDot or CashX cards which are prepaid refillable credit cards. GreenDot is generally for online transactions whereas Cash X will actually issue a Visa/MC branded card.

I have a Debit Card (free with my bank account) and a Credit Card (it was a bad idea and I knew it but I needed cash in a hurry, I am okay with having to deal with the payments) but I prefer to use cash for buying normal things (food, bus tickets, nights out) so that I keep my budget in check. When I am buying online (only for special treats) I use PayPal and for paying bills and rent I use internet banking transfers.
It actually wasn't tricky at all applying for my credit card, I just had to supply a letter from my employer saying I had a full-time job.

Now I want a 3 piece suit of Awesome. Not fair! I am not a man with that kind of money! But if I am ever rich and famous, I will follow Katie's advice and not only have good lingerie, I will also have a really good suit! I will be all sorts of dapper because I'd also wear a top hat/bowler and a monocle.

Actually I want to make that happen regardless of whether or not I'm rich and famous, I want a 3 piece suit, fancy hat, and a monocle.

wait, seriously? in my experience i have found most banks will do anything to get you a credit card because they make a fortune off interest and fees. i have had a credit card since i was sixteen with absolutely zero effort because my bank literally just handed it to me since i had an account with them. i have tried canceling it a couple of times just for fun and i honestly don't think i could even if i wanted to.

but i don't own any other plaid shit so... opine on these? 1 2

you mean tommy's vendetta against plaid. if i am not mistaken, the outcome of the big stupid plaid argument way back was that the fashion advice thread loves plaid. because plaid is the best.
i think they both look pretty snazzy, the pattern on the second jacket is a little busy but as long as the rest of your outfit is not too crazy then it balances out. i see no problems here.

also tania, in the us at least you can't get a credit card now until you're 21 unless you have a co-signer or a "proven ability to pay", whateverthefuck that means. the new law went into effect today!

also credit cards and debit cards are like way way way way way safer than carrying cash. with a credit card in the us, if the card has fraud, you're not liable for any of it. you're fucked if someone steals your $500 in cash though. and you can turn them off immediately if they're missing, but if your cash is missing... you're fucked still. plus it's awesome for tracking spending cuz a lot of bank sites will give you a run-down of charges through the year so you can see exactly what you're spending on the most/least etc.

Hey everyone, I need to buy some new bookshelves. When I get back from Ikea and put them together you're all invited to the bookshelf launch party.

And if you played too hard it'd flop out and dangle around by the wire and that is just super ugly

In the UK this seems to be more common. I don't think you can book flights except with a credit card for example.

I booked my flights to America using a Visa debit card; I couldn't have used an Electron card though. I think it depends on the bank - Nationwide wouldn't give me a debit or credit card until I was 18, the Halifax gave me a Visa Electron which some places refuse, and Natwest gave me a standard Visa debit with my student account.

There's this really handy "other thing" I'm going to write as a footnote to my abstract that I can probably explore these issues in. I think I'll call it my "dissertation."

I really, really don't like pinstripes so that Brioni suit does literally nothing for me.

Anna, good jackets!
