Hey Tania! I have those boots too!

After a year of hard cafe working the front got really awful and scuffed down to beige and covered in crap that I can't get off, so I don't wear 'em anymore. :(
If you take good care of them and don't get them filthy with kitchen muck they will be okay I hope!

Mai, honestly I think every one of those boots are awful and I would not ever wear them. Of all, the Bellevue boot are the least ugly, and probably would be best for hiking. The first three probably wouldn't be any better than Chucks in a wet, dirty or slippery situation. Go to a hiking/sports store and pick the least ugly!

I also don't think running shoes look too bad when you have a nice outfit (or some sexy tight running clothes) on with them.

lunchy i remember! i had been ogling them in the window at one of my favourite shoe stores in toronto the last couple of months and my logic was essentially "man those are expensive but if i can look even a quarter as badass as lunchy does in them then they will be so worth it." i had to get a size bigger than what i normally wear cos i have wide feet and as a result i feel sort of self-conscious and like maybe they look kind of like big clown shoes on me but i'll see how they look once they break in a bit.

I have been wanting some nice raw denim jeans for a little while now, and I've come to a point in time where they won't break the bank. I'm getting black APC petit standards. If you're gonna get all denim geek on me, I know there's cooler stuff out there, but I can't afford PBJs or Sammies, and the fit has to be pretty slim or else I'm swimming in fabric, cus I'm not a very large person.

they look like this

this is some dude on flickr wearing them

I don't know. I guess I like my guys to have a little bit of meat on their bones, or muscle. Something.

*Which isn't to say that skinny guys are gross, or that this guy is unhealthy in anyway, or that any skinny guys are. I'm sure that dude is totally fine(in more ways than one). It just struck me how freaking tiny his knees are. Keep in mind this is coming from a lady with extremely muscular calves and thighs. Seriously. I regularly impress people at the gym with them.

Yeah, I dunno how I feel about stacks. The wear looks interesting, but so does a little cuff. Then there's always having pants that are actually the right length.

@emaline I totally sympathize with occasionally being weirded out by people with radically different body-types from one's self. Some people are so huge! But also I weigh like 125 pounds so a lot of people seem huge to me.

So denim geeks, Sam's comments about the opportunities presented to me by being in Japan have gotten to me. What brands should I be looking out for when I'm over there, i.e; that I'm unlikely to see in elsewhere

I'm going to rule against Tommy's plaid bias, but I still get that maybe it isn't the best-lookin' jacket. How about fit? Last time I measured myself, I was only about 33", and that coat is a 36R. Seriously difficult finding anything tinier than that, but it felt okay slipping into.

fraser dogg i just do not feel posi about a blazer in that context. wearing a blazer is a pretty neat idea but it never seems to work. wear a flannel it would work a million times better.

I think it looks too big, it will make you look smaller. If it's an option you could get a blazer shortened (the shoulders aren't as bad as the length). I don't have anything against plaid but a patterned blazer is a risky choice.

Question that has nothing to do with the current discussion: A friend of mine recently got a hoodie w/zipper from Threadless, and when it is completely open, the handle-thingy on the zipper is on the right side. This confused us immensely, and I know we have discussed the zipper and button row-thing here before, but I don't think I've ever used a piece of clothing that had the zipper on the right side, so I don't think it's a gender thing either? Is this common in the US (or other places, just not here), or is there another explanation?

ummm, i have been told before that hoodies with zippers on the right side are "mens" hoddies and ones with zippers on the left side are "ladies" hoodies. it's a completely bullshit idea, seeing as how hoodies are one of the most gender-neutral articles of clothing i can think of. the hoodie i have now though zips on the left and i got it in a ladies section cause that was the cheapest one. that is at least my explanation, as somebody from the US.

fraser branching out is cool but blazers are not. *thumbs up*

I have heard the men's and ladies' explanation before, yeah, and have noticed it with buttons and which side the "fold over" on zippers is, but I just have never encountered a hoodie or jacket with a zipper on the right side, neither had the one who got it (until now). The jacket I'm wearing now is a men's jacket, but the zipper is on the left side. So are the zippers on all my other jackets, both ladies' models and men's models, as well as the men's hoodies from H&M. I'm confused.

Not that it really matters, but a zipper on the right side felt all kinds of awkward.

I have a couple of hoodies and shirts bought in the men's section of stores here in Norway, and the zipper/buttons are always on the left side, just like on women's clothing. My AA men's hoodie that I bought in the US however, has the zipper on the right side. Maybe the gender thing is also an American thing?

I used to think so, but in the last week, I've found three pairs of pants and jeans that fit me well and look okay! I was sort of shocked, especially because their pants usually don't fit me, since I'm fat and short, but with a cuff, all three pairs fit okay. Also, they were cheap, which is a huge advantage when I can't seem to make up my mind about which size I am.

I love H&M's tops and dresses, but I am picky about pants and only buy them in certain places and that is not one of those places.

I am wearing a hoodie and the zipper is on my right. All of my flies open on my right. I can't remember about my button up shirts though, but I think all the buttons are on the left. But everything I have with a zipper has the pull tab on the right side.

Ok, I'm having a discussion with a friend. Two points:

First, which is better:
This
or
this (nevermind. this shirt disappeared. But still taking opinions on the first)

(bonus: the shirts were for my boyfriend, who is short and chubby, and vaguely goth)

Second: Military fashion. Always in style?

(Bonus: Can/Is fashion timeless?)

First:

Link #1 is awful. Absolutely awful.

Link #2 is broken.

Second:

Depends on the situation but if I had to generalize I would say military fashion for chubby goth dudes is timeless.

First:
Ok...so...the second link was working. And now, even following it from when I sent it in im, it doesn't work. And the shirt has disappeared off the site completely now. Strange.

Second:
I'm not just talking goth military fashion, or just for my boyfriend. I mean, peacoats, various military jackets, and boots, etc. I tend to think that the military will continue to inspire fashion.

And the friend does not think that fashion in general can be timeless.

The military hasn't brought anything new to fashion in a hundred years.

But combat boots, peacoats and epauletted jackets are timeless.

The military hasn't brought anything new to fashion in a hundred years.
Trench coats as we know them were created during WW1.

And, to pick less nits, the M65 jacket design has been made by dozens of companies, and it was created slightly before 1965 (who would have guessed?). I can't find a decent picture of a fashion M65, but you know those epauletted jackets with the two big chest pockets and two big pockets right around the hips, with the jacket going slightly onto the thigh? Yeah, that's the M65.

I suppose no fashion is timeless, but there are some fashions that last a hell of a long time. For instance, suits, a dark blue suit could be made anywhere from the '20s to modern day and it wouldn't be horribly out of fashion anywhere. Might not be the trendiest, but it wouldn't stand out as godawful. Same with the solid color T-shirt and jeans, although that combination would only go back to the '50s or so, that is about when they stopped being thought of as solely work pants.

I wore a different zip up today and it had the zipper on the left. The first was from Old Navy and the one I wore today was Tommy Hilfiger. Both are American. All my other zip ups and jackets have the zipper on the right, so I don't really know about this whole zipper thing.

That is just ridiculous. Why would you ever pay $900 for a gore-tex jacket that looks like a $20 surplus jacket?

This reminds me, though, what are some good options for structured warm weather jackets? I have a camouflage field shirt that I like the look of, but sometimes camouflage isn't appropriate.

I'm not saying I would ever pay that for a jacket (maybe if I was super rich, but I'm not, and the Norwegian price for that jacket is $1182, which is even worse), but that jacket does not look like a $20 surplus jacket at all.

I want nice-looking jackets like that for women (only, you know, for a fraction of the price). I sort of have a really hard time finding good jackets I like, especially because I don't like wearing super feminine stuff.

Man, if I ever spend a ridiculous amount of money on a jacket, it'll definitely be a Rick Owens leather piece.

Guys, what is this style of coat called?

I'm after a black jacket, thigh length, big lapels and long cuffed sleeves basically. Similar in style but not colour to the above.
