I was once chatting with this lad I worked in a bar with about music and he asked who I'd been listening to recently and I said Bob Dylan, so he replied that he really didn't rate Dylan that much, and when I asked why he said...

"Because if you ever see any of his songs written down, they're just poems"

...which stands to this day as perhaps the stupidest comment I've ever heard on the subject of music. Anyone else heard any little gems that are worth sharing?

A girl attempted to justify to me why exactly she respected Britney Spears for what she's contributed to the music industry:

"Everyone seems to hate Britney but I don't understand why, I mean she's so pretty!"

No, she wasn't joking, and yes, she is my age, although this conversation did happen a couple of years ago.

Uhhhmmm yeah.

I once argued with a guy called Alex about his (ir)rationel love of Usher, his defence was a bit odd:

"I know his lyrics and the music is kind of bad but he sings well!"

or something to that effect. Keep in mind he's extremely mainstream-minded, his idea of rock is Linkin Park who he has recently discovered. I have actually played Enon, My Bloody Valentine etc. which he dismisses as either bad or weird. However he likes M.I.A, mostly because she's hot apparently. We have had many shit-throwingfest based on our different tastes, but we're still pals, just not musicwise.

I was explaining to a friend how something like Taste of Chaos only produces homogeny among the genres one day, and I don't quite think she understood, because all she said in response was "Yeah, I like all kinds of music."

I once played a girl Liquid Tension Experiment. She asked if it was considered "techno".

Also, I have heard countless people say that 50 Cent is a good rapper because he is a "real gangsta".

Also, I think I saw 50 Cent hawking off shoes on TV the other day.

I let my friend listen to In Flames, to try and break her out of her mainstream shell (im still fairly mainstream, but like some indie)
She died in my eyes

She said they sounded like a mix of My Chemical Romance and Mindless Self Indulgance.

Also, why stop at 2 shots in the face. They deserve worse.

Now, every day people saying that would be normal, because the Great Unwashed as a whole are stupid. But a TV documentary? Do your fucking research.

most of the ones I've heard are pretty standard, mostly of the "Good Charlotte is so punk"/"The Aquabats are totally a ska band" variety.

DynamiteKid, are you sure they said "first" or "debut"?  because those are two different terms.  if they did say "first", though, that is terrible.

My friend keeps thinking that Beck's Guero is somehow completely different than Odelay and is his most diverse record. She also ignores the fact that EVERYONE IN THE WORLD WHO IS SMART knows that Odelay and Guero are the SAME THING and that the former is better. She says that I have bad taste.

Someone I know said that "all current bands sound the same," but he is amazingly ignorant. He listens to mostly classical music, I think. He also got me in trouble during French class because he kept talking to me. Bahhh.

I'm devastated. I was talking to my dad the other day, the man who used to drive me everywhere when I was Dead Little with Led Zeppelin and Jimi Hendrix tapes in his car, the man who made me appreciate Miles Davis' Bitches Brew when I was only ten years old, the man who taught me to truly love music, and he was trying to copy some good rock and roll for a colleague, so I suggested The Ramones, to which he replied...

"The Ramones aren't really a rock and roll band, are they?"

...not as bad as the Bob Dylan comment, but still pretty disapointed about it.

Surely it depends on your definition of rock 'n' roll...

Oh, someone once told me that the Jet album was the freshest, most original debut he'd heard in years.

Haaaaa.

And yes they definitely said 'first' not 'debut'.

I herd something if not stupid then interesting on the radio the other day. Apparently they did a world wide poll of 700,000 people (Correct me if I'm wrong but isn't there 6 BILLON people in the world??? But apparently 700,000 is enough to be called a world *coughjusttheUScough* poll) anyways.... and they asked the question of what (in your oppoinon) is the best song ever...(also a stupid question because no one chould have heard every song so it fails right there).... I can only remember the top three

1. Queen - We are the champons (Good but the best??)
2. britany Spears - Toxic (At this point, I thoght the whole thing was a joke, but no its not.)
3. Michel Jackson - Billy Jean ( For some reson I like this one.. Don't ask why)

AND I THOUGHT THAT WAS PRETTY STUPID!

Some months ago, on a train ride to work, I overheard a couple of youngsters (about age 12) talk about music. One of them, typically the kind of kid the others would look up to, had a discman. He was telling the others how the song they were listening to was called "hey ho let's go" by the "Ramoness" (pronounced like that, yes, in Dutch). I felt like getting up and shoving the kid through the window of the moving train, but sadly, I managed to do nothing more than shake my head in disgust. I don't think I've listened to Blitzkrieg Bop ever since.

Bull. NIN are called industrial all the time, but their music is far too human to be industrial. Compare it to fucking Fear Factory or someone and there's very little correlation.

A mate of mine who I have known for many years made the effort of phoning me up from America in the middle of his holiday to tell me that I really, really had to check out My Chemical Romance. Oh, and Coldplay's new album. I'd desperately like to believe that, for the duration of the phone call, he thought I was someone else.

Also, at my young lady's the other day she put on Kelly Clarkson's album. I mean, fair cop, her place her music, but she brought it round to mine last night and tried to get me to turn off my Tom Waits. Not a 'stupid comment', I'll admit, but an outrageous breach of etiquette.

my friend Kieffer once alleged that one of the most common topics of punk rock songs was "raping women".

what makes this claim all the more baffling was that this was in eighth grade, when his perception of punk rock was Green Day and New Found Glory.
