Essential metal albums?

<< < (7/9) > >>

KharBevNor:
Bolt Thrower are a great band, but I wouldn't see them as essential. I mean, they play good fucking death metal, but they didn't revolutionise much. Then again, I'm a bit of a philistine when it comes to DM, so fair enough. Same again with Deicide: yeah, it's fun to sing along with 'Blame It on God' or 'Scars of the Crucifix' but it's pretty mundane stuff. Nile though, fuck yes. Behemoth as well, in the same vein.

Helmet I could never really see the appeal in, but over-all I suppose I just don't really like the classic 'american metal' sound that much. I mean, I like swampy deep south sort of stuff, in particular Acid Bath and Danzig, but also Alabama Thunderpussy and the whole southern sludge scene a-la Eyehategod to an extent, but not so much say, Pantera, or a lot of Bay Area thrash. My main hots have always been mainly for British and Scandinavian shit.

Also, am I really the only person alive who prefers 'Panzer Division Marduk' to 'Heaven Shall Burn...'? Yeah, I know it's fucking heresy, but I can't help it, Panzer Division is so fucking fun.

Catatonik:
Say what you will, but I have always actively despised Deicide almost as much as Cannibal Corpse and cannot for the life of me get their appeal.

Maybe I'm just different that way.

Bolt Thrower I will admit are awesome. :D

That list is a combination of stuff I think is essential, and stuff that I've been listening to constantly lately.  And I'll add to it.

Cynic - Focus (To quote a review I read, "it's like three Dream Theater albums playing at once."  But better, 'cos I don't really like Dream Theater.)
Vader - Litany (my Vader-appreciation is very new, from what I understand it's not their best, but I had to start somewhere)
Agoraphobic Nosebleed - Altered States of America (I would say this is pretty damn essential, it's one of the sickest straight-up, pure grind albums I've ever had the pleasure of hearing.)

I'm surprised that you despise Deicide and Cannibal Corpse, yet said nothing about Exhumed.  Those guys very much have their tongues in cheek.

And yes, Bolt Thrower fucking rules.

Thrash is one of my favorite subgenres, along with power and prog (thanks for recommending Ayreon, btw, I love what little I've been able to find), but that might just because I haven't been exposed to other ones. Thus, a lot of my favorite metal bands are American. Except I hate Slayer, which has got me into many a heated argument.

I won't argue about it here, but man, whenever I hear a metal fan say that, there are words exchanged.  Oh yes, many words.  At least you didn't say you hate Motörhead.
