Any metal lovers out there?
« on: 03 Apr 2008, 17:54 »

So i ran a quick search and couldn't find anything recent about metal, so i decided to make my own topic.

My favorite metal bands are: Lamb of God, Disturbed, Slipknot, Korn, Devil Driver, Dimmu Borgir, Pantera.

The bands i find slightly acceptable: Godsmack, Cannibal Corpse.

The bands i find horrible: Cradle of Filth, Children of Bodom.

The bands i do not consider metal: Limp Bizkit, Breaking Benjamin.

Just trying to get a conversation going, Ima leave it up to you all now.

I find it hard to believe that you searched very thoroughly, to not find anything about metal on THIS forum.

Also, you look like you need some suggestions, because most of those bands just aren't very good metal (ie. Korn aren't even metal, and Slipknot are nu metal).  Maybe you just haven't been exposed to enough.  Listen to Khar in particular, he should be along soon :]

I find it hard to classify bands like slipknot or korn, even disturbed gets hard, everyone seems to have a different idea of what they are, metal, nu-metal, who cares its all good, usually.

Also, Slipknot and KoRn are not metal. Not really debatable.

Plus Lamb Of God are Metalcore.

Anyway, I don't listen to much Metal in fact the only bands from the genre I listen to are Mastodon, Agalloch and Earth. They aren't pure Metal but some sub genres of it.

I would not always agree with metal archives. Whatserface, the admin, name slips my mind, she seems to have a bias against proto-metal, BOC kind of stuff. Sure, they aren't even as heavy as their contemporaries, but black sabbath is pretty heavy even for today. And then she puts some stuff that seems pretty much just hair metal in the archives too, maybe I just haven't heard their metal releases. I do agree on what you labeled not metal, though. I think Lamb of God is pretty borderline, though that could be my quality bias coming out.

No jeph, this thread is now about Agalloch. We can all agree on that, yes? Or do I have to get the hatchet?

The texture of the soul is a liquid that casts a vermilion flood
From a wound carved as an oath; it fills the river bank a sanguine fog
These arms were meant to be lost! Hacked, severed and forgotten
The texture of time is a whisper that echoes across the flood
It's hymn resonates from tree to tree, through every sullen bough it sings
These boughs were said to be lost! Torn, unearthed and broken
Earth to flesh, flesh to wood, cast these limbs into the water
Flesh to wood, wood to stone, cast this stone into the water...

Man the singer for Agalloch is so silly
And awesome. They get nervous in live performances, though, they couldn't get the effects right in the bootleg I heard. And in the DVD they are releasing, they messed up the volume so they had to play limbs *twice*.

Black sabbath is, same with deep purple, but not BOC or Uriah Heep, and Rush is on there, but I haven't heard anything from them that I would really describe as metal. Quiet riot is on there, I was surprised when I saw them under Q, I thought they were just hair metal, though metal health is an awesome song.

Ah, I see. Still, members of bands on there were in BOC, and they aren't on there, so that doesn't fit. I think there is just bias in selection.

edit: I wish I could be anywhere near as good at guitar as Don Anderson is, it is one thing to be able to play fast, most anyone can do it after enough practice, but playing well and beautifully is different.

The new In Flames album is pretty under whelming guys.
Maybe one or two really exemplary tracks and the rest are recycled riffs. While I do not expect them to return to the Colony/Clayman era, this CD is almost as bad as Soundtrack to your Escape.

That is indeed their best era and they've steadily gone down hill from there, but c'mon Reroute to Remain isn't as bad as people make it out to be!

Also 3 Inches of Blood is amazing and I am giving you so many internet high fives. It's like someone took Iron Maiden and made them even more awesome.

Iron Maiden have plenty of balls. Anyone who disagrees is looking for a fight. Also, 3IoB are fun, but they're not IRON FUCKING MAIDEN. Jeez. Kids these days. You are on the slippery slope towards comparing Trivium to Judas Priest and liking St. Anger.

Also, just because a band dressed up in the hair metal fashion doesn't necessarily mean they ain't metal. There's a big difference between 'Talk Dirty to Me'  and 'Burn in Hell'.

Also, seriously, In Flames? Does anyone still give a shit about them? They are by far the most boring gothenburg/MDM band. You'd do better with Edge of Sanity, Darkane, At The Gates and old Arch Enemy and Dark Tranquillity if you like music in that mode. Albums such as Purgatory Afterglow, Slaughter of the Soul, Rusted Angel, Burning Bridges and The Gallery piss all over anything In Flames has ever done.

No they're not Iron Maiden, but their vocal stylings have been compared to early Maiden and for the sake of simplifying the discussion I compared them to a more recognized band. Though I was wrong in stating that 3 Inches of Blood is more awesome than Maiden.

And yes people still give a shit about In Flames. While there are better groups out there, such as the many you stated, In Flames just released a new album so I figured it would be a decent topic of discussion.

No, no one cares about In Flames anymore.  They had Jester Race/Black Ash Inheritance, and everything else was piss.  Other, better bands have release new albums recently, so that's why we're not talking about them.

Alex, have I told you lately that I love you?!

No, but you have been eyeing my SG rather lustily. Maybe that counts. D:

Also, I have no idea why people still give a damn about In Flames. They were never really even that good to begin with. Most of the darker power metal bands are more musically interesting and instrumentally heavier, anyway, which reminds me that Gothernberg's melodic "death metal" may as well be called "extreme power metal". Where the hell is the actual death metal?

And guys if you want to listen to an actual death metal band that has a lot of melodic content, just listen to Amon Amarth.

Quote
You are on the slippery slope towards comparing Trivium to Judas Priest

People already compare Trivium to thrash-era Metallica.

Actually on the subject of Trivium it would be interesting if they, for once, wrote a song of their own. I mean, technically they have three albums worth of original songs but they kind of sound like they're, for instance, The Four Horsemen Pt. 2 or A Less Progressive Take On Metallica In General and Let's Steal A Megadeth Song For Good Measure. They can clearly play their instruments and that's a step in the right direction for mainstream music.

Okay, upon further thinking even shitty metalcore is probably a step in the right direction, but what I'm really saying here is that I have no idea why the majority of the new thrash movement want to rape their influences so hard someone hold me please
