If you like classic rock, you could hop in chronologically to metal...start with the classic NWOBHM bands - Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, etc. (look on www.allmusic.com for info).  Then maybe get into some thrash (Metallica, Slayer) or power (Kamelot, Sonata Arctica)- something with less edge than death or black metal.

I don't know at all about how to get someone interested in metal, I'm sure there are other people here that will be able to help you much better.

Additionally, I only listen to a few hip-hop artists, mostly just the catchy ones and a few underground bands.  I like trip-hop better.

As far as hip-hop goes, the one man I'd point anyone to at any time is Whitby, Ontario's K-OS. The thing I like about him (other than writing great songs) is his ability to assimilate various other styles into his sound. One person on another board describing him as "everything ive ever wanted from hip hop the outkast couldnt give me."

If you want to ease yourself into metal from your classic-rock upbringings, I say start yourself off with some Black Sabbath and Uriah Heap, if you haven't already. I wouldn't call Uriah Heap "heavy metal," per se, but it sure as hell sounds to me like the grandfather to power-metal.

And just for shits, check out King Crimson's In The Court of the Crimson King and/or The Power To Believe. Then start checking out Yes's pre-1980s material ("Owner of a Lonely Heart" can kiss my ass, but albums such as Close to the Edge, The Yes Album and their s/t 1969 debut, among others, are nothing short of pure aural awesome). Frank Zappa is also rather good, but despite how great he could be on one album, he could be rather shitty on another. I'd say allmusic.com is actually pretty accurate in their ratings of his albums.

If everyone else here insists on suggesting Slint's Spiderland to anyone and everyone asking for recomendations, then I'll have to insist on suggesting the Ramones' first album to anyone and everyone. In fact, check out bothe albums.

If you're a fan of power-pop and you have yet to hear either Milk 'n Cookies or The Pillows, then stop wasting your time here and search those bands out! (The Pillows might be kinds tricky, seeing as they're from Japan. Check out some torrent sites, and be forewarned that everything before Please Mr. Lostman has a certain balls-lessness that was solved once the guitarist found himself a distortion pedal.)

Get Paranoid by Black Sabbath.  It has a lot in common with the classic rock of the time period it was released, but it features a much darker tone and more powerful guitar.  Given your background, I think that is the best place for you to be introduced to metal in general.

You should listen to Hum!  Spacy, loud and oblique!

If you want to stop listening to indiepop cold turkey, I recommend It's Good to be Alive by Busytoby.  That record made me hate indiepop for about six months.  It might turn you off of music all together, though.

Dipping your toe? I've been listening to the go! team a lot (non-stop) recently, it's some energetic indie-pop-rock with hints of hip-hop. Might ease the transition.

If you're going for K-os, Joyful Rebellion is the album to go with (though I think he has a new one I haven't heard yet?). Jurassic 5 is also good hip-hop (and they come right before K-os on my mp3 list by artist!). I'm not sure which album to recommend, but I think I have Power In Numbers.

And remember, the difference between hip-hop and rap is that hip-hop doesn't suck! At least that's how I define it in my head; if it's ambiguous and I like it, it's hip-hop.

Yesh.

Or Dangerdoom - The Mouse and the Mask. Collaberation between Dangermouse (from Gnarls Barkley, and his brilliant Grey Album) and MF Doom.
And since we mentioned MF Doom, try to find his other alias: King Geedorah - Take me to your leader. Quite brilliant, horribly overlooked.

Oh. And Deltron 3030, very laidback hiphop. You might know the rapper (Del the funky homosapien) from The Gorillaz too.

... Khar will sort you out.

But i bet that he'll include Skyclad as a recommendation. And I'd like to preemptively second that. For they are good. And folk-metal like this is easy on the ears, I find, for loads of people, even if they come from different musical backgrounds.

i think if you played someone the arcade fire when they had requested 'indie pop' (i'm assuming this means 'popular music on an independent label', which it was at one point) i don't think they'd be disappointed.

Yes, but like it or lump it that is not the common definition. I would define 'pop' as 'popular music,' but by and large when people think pop they'll be thinking hooks these days, and I'd not put Arcade Fire into this category.

Of course, it's down to the thread starter to tell us which of these he was actually after.

If no-one's mentioned them already, I say The Pariahs. Big, dumb, old punks from Kingston, Canada. Brilliant. Should be mentioned here partly because their self-titled album from last year is great, and partly because 1995's Mouthful of Headache is one of the greatest album titles ever.

You should ignore the BM genre altogether. There are many bands that support or write "lyrical garbage" and you might not even notice. So, just to be safe, steer clear of the entire genre.  :-D

Check out some torrent sites, and be forewarned that everything before Please Mr. Lostman has a certain balls-lessness that was solved once the guitarist found himself a distortion pedal.)

If you searched for 'FLCL' or 'Furi Kuri' on file sharing sites 3 or so years ago you could find heaps of songs since they did the soundtrack for an amazing/cult anime that Jeph recently parodied in QC.
So 'way ahead of you', i guess

I'm into that sort of stuff, but does all the 70s Zep/Sabbath count as metal? i've got friends who are into it.. and Guns N Roses and Crue and all that... but its much less heavy then the metal people are talking about now

Go! Team are fun.

I agree, and would also suggest Iron Maiden - Piece of Mind. They both have similarities to classic rock bands like Deep Purple or Led Zeppelin while definitely being metal in their own right. I can definitely attest that they're excellent 'gateway' bands, as I was actually once in the same position as the original poster.

From there I moved to thrash, and then on to the heavier stuff. It helped me to go in stages.

So you know the really good indie record labels, and you know how you can find a label that has a bunch of bands you like, so you can pretty much tell that basically every band on that particular label is one that you will probably like, right?

I recommend Rhymesayers. Especially the artists Atmosphere (he introduced me to not-as-mainstream hip-hop), Brother Ali, MF DOOM, P.O.S. (equal parts hip-hop and punk. Try his cover of All Along the Watchtower), and Soul Position. Aesop Rock, Ghostface Killah, Heiruspecs, Mr. Lif and the Sneakerpimps are also pretty awesome. cLOUDDEAD is good, but Yoni Wolf's other project, Why? is way indie-pop.

Also: The grandpas of the genre, Public Enemy (but do NOT under any circumstances come anywhere close to their new stuff. It's all Flava Flave being really obnoxious), Run-DMC, Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five, The Sugarhill Gang (because I'm pretty sure Rapper's Delight is one of the greatest things ever written... but I think that's their only worthwhile contribution? Correct me if I'm wrong) and Kool Keith.

I'm an indie-popper too, and that is basically an ordered list of "How Brittany Got a Groove". Don't go for gangsta rap right away-but eventually you may want to look more into that.

I assumed by indie-pop he meant "Dudes and ladies who have a huge boner over Phil Specter and probably Brian Wilson, as well, who release music that is not mainstream". Like pop music (bubblegum pop or otherwise) that is a little too weird for the top 40. I'm the sort of person who thinks of pop as it's own genre with a certain sound though.

The Sugarhill Gang (because I'm pretty sure Rapper's Delight is one of the greatest things ever written... but I think that's their only worthwhile contribution?

I oughta slap you, boy!

Ok, so they aren't the most brilliantly consistant hip-hop group out there, but I would at least recommend picking up their best of, or at the very least, The Showdown: The Sugarhill Gang vs Grandmaster Flash, it is one of my favorite party albums of all time.

Also, while we are just recommending things that aren't Indie Pop willy Nilly:

TISM - Great Trucking Songs of the Renaissance (if you are more prone to punk) or alternativly
TISM - Machiavelli and the Four Seasons or www.tism.wanker.com (if you are more prone to electronica, except it is also kind of punk except they aren't really punk at all, look its hard to explain, they are pretty dang good)

Tism is kind of my Skyclad.

As for metal, I would recommend

Iron Maiden - Powerslave
Black Sabbath - Paranoid
Dio - Holy Diver
Devin Townsend - Infinity

These are all pretty good albums.

It is also pretty fantastic that in both this thread and the Indie Pop recommendation thread, someone has recommended Spiderland. I endorse this event.

My introduction to Iron Maiden was Live at the Rock in Rio - that might offend the purists, but its still one of favorite Maiden albums. So if you are into live albums, thats preety awesome.

So I'm thinking we need to reccomend some electronica, but I'm not really sure where to start. Early stuff is usually a good bet though, so I'm going to reccomend Kraftwerk's album The Mix. At least, I think thats the one. Actually, its all preety damn good, and you probably see where some of the indie-pop dudes get their ideas from. Because almost all forms of electronica has been influenced by Kraftwerk, you see.

I will also second the Pillows reccomendation.

I recommend Rhymesayers. Especially ... Atmosphere (he introduced me to not-as-mainstream hip-hop)...

What's a good record of Atmosphere's to get into?

Also, if you haven't heard Slint's Spiderland then you should get right on that.

Try Seven's Travels or God Loves Ugly.
