I don't really see how this stuff is destroying that album, in fact I think if anything it's making people curious enough to want to hear it. I know it worked on me. I had never heard that record even though I walked past it about a million times when I worked at a record store. Anyways, so I picked up the record finally and I thought it was ok, but not really anything to get excited about.

Point being, I probably would've never sought it out to begin with if it wasn't for these punchlines.  :-D

I'd reccomend Tara by the band Absu. It is possibly my favourite black metal album of the month.

Agreed. 8-)

Is there some way I can trade listening to Slint for maybe listening to 2 other forum favourite bands? What if I listen to Skyclad and Broken Social Scene? Will that do?

I'd assume so, especially since both are vastly superior to Slint.

Sir, you sound like you may enjoy the band Squirrel Bait. They were a totally awesome punk band from Louisville in the 80s. Great, great stuff.

Unfortunately, they broke up after their second album and none of the band members have done anything noteworthy since.

khar: well, from what i can gather, you pretty much banned jawbreaker from punx, which was a move based solely on your opinion on jawbreakers sound, and the sound that a punk band should have, and judging from your punk recommendations, which consist mostly (seven out of eight) of punk bands from the 1970's uk, a punk band should sound like one of those from the 1970's uk. it's a bit of a stretch, i'll admit, but it's a point that i wanted to make. as well, the illegitimacy of the sex pistols' message and all, though somewhat irrelevant and extraneous, was another. And i realize that most bands do not have legitimate politics, but some do. those are the ones i listen to. also, most bands do not gain a fanbase by preaching about the counter culture and anarchy, only to sell it out. this brings us to against me, supersheep.

Quote
And look at the bands that are 'anarchist' punk - Against Me! anyone?

they are not an anarcho punk band. sure, they garnered shitloads of support from the d.i.y. punk scene and got to where they are now by writing songs about anarchy and all things associated, but they quickly killed that good thing and signed to one of the major labels they once fought against. thus, and for the same reason why i don't listen to the sex pistols, i don't listen to against me. and yeah, you're right in thinking that music does not have to be political to be good. half the bands i listed in this thread alone don't say shit about it. but, if a band decides to have their politics define their music, then i would prefer them to actually believe in those politics.

Quote
If you want to listen to new punk listen to Leftover Crack or something.

i do listen to leftover crack. besides, jawbreaker isn't even new, they broke up ten years ago.

Quote
seriously, what the fuck is an anarcho punk?

when i say anarcho punk, i mean people who don't believe in the system and therefore do not allow their lives to be used to further it. drifters, squatters, people who don't eat processed and artificial foods and don't buy from harmful corporations, don't watch t.v., who eat from dumpsters and hitch rides. people who believe in and practice the politics they preach. the band crass as opposed to the sex pistols.

Quote
Man, you went to The Fest V. I am envying you so hard right now.

yeah, it was fucking nuts. its the one time of the year when it pays to live in florida. you should go to the next one, dude, totally fucking worth it. i had a friend fly in from arizona, and i met kids from north carolina, indiana, new york . . . . myself and a few friends drove 5 hours for the thing.

i think we've just shown why no one should ever try to discuss punk music. it always dissolves into senseless arguing.

Hey guys, I was just wondering if anybody knew of any other music around like Belle and Sebastian's "Night Walk".

It's really good music when I want to have an afternoon nap or for when I'm studying, and it just kinda makes me sit back and go "Wow...Everything is right with the world".

I have alot of George Winston, however you can't just listen to the same piano pieces all of the time!

So, any ideas?

(Oh, another good one is "Sunshine And Clouds And Everything Proud" By CYHSY)

Augie March's "Sunset Studies" is a nice, quiet album that helps you relax. For actually going to sleep, I recommend Lisa Miller's "Car Tape." Can't really help with the studying thing. I was one of those annoying smegheads that could just sit in class, absorb the information, and then walk into the exam, do it, walk out, and end up getting a much better than average mark. However, for "Gee, the world is pretty ace, isn't it?" music, I recommend "This Beautiful Life" by Big Bad Voodoo Daddy, or pretty much anything by Even. Or "The New Transistor Heroes" by the now sadly defunct Bis...

OK, I'm pretty sure that Khar will agree with me here - that is NOT what makes you an anarchist. Anarchism is about your politics, not your lifestyle. Of course there are a lot of anarchists within the whole crusty/freegan/squatter movement, but you can be an anarchist and still buy stuff - the most important part of anarchism (IMO) is building communities inside the system. There's no point preaching to the converted. The reason I think Against Me! aren't anarchist is because of "Baby I'm An Anarchist" - the culmination of 150 years of struggle is not a broken window in a coffee shop.
I don't wanna derail this thread and turn it into POLITICS EET FUCK though, so I will refrain from commenting further upon this.

^ Full agree. I believe in evolution not revolution. To be frank, though I admit it may be a much freer way of living in some ways, the full 'opt out' never really made sense to me politically or in any other way. By placing yourself completely outside the system, you lose any ability you have to change it, but you don't really affect the systems ability to censure you via the agency of the police. And it isn't really freedom, because you're still allowing the system to define your existence: just by omission. It does seem awfully attractive sometimes though.

Tommy: if you don't understand the theory of property within anarchy (which it seems you do not) then do not comment on that.

Yeah, only teenagers

I am no longer a teenager, and I am an anarchist. So there Tommy. Now you must revise your statement HAHA! Thpppt bleah. Also, possessions /= property. (Anarchist definition of property is means of production, not personal belongings.)

Also, kudos to Khar for putting the problem with "opting out" much better than I did.

Just as a matter of interest, what would you think would be give someone a credible claim to be an anarchist?

FIGHTING THE MAN SINGLE HANDED AND WINNING!!1!1!

I don't quite get your 'credible claim' thing. Anarchy is a political position, a spectrum of beliefs on the political compass. Lets imagine some other terms put there: 'I've never met anyone with a credible claim to being a conservative', 'I've never met anyone with a credible claim to being a vegetarian', 'I've never met anyone with a credible claim to being a fascist', 'I've never met anyone with a credible claim to being a christian', 'I've never met anyone with a credible claim to being a cat lover'.

It's a facetious statement. You can't evaluate someone elses belief in a cause or ideal, and you can't judge via peoples actions either. Especially if, as I suspect, you do not have a clear or exact concept of  the system of thought you are referring to. Like if you thought vegetarians couldn't eat bread. It's like the people who tell me I'm not a pagan because I don't wear a toga and worship at a temple of Diana, or some bollocks like that. The worst thing about such people is that, in a large amount of cases, they hold themselves to have a greater insight into the ideas and philosophies than the people who actually hold them, who are of course self-delusional idiots because they believe something that the person does not believe or understand.

Victory was never a good label. It's had one or two good bands over the years I'll give you that, but come on, One Life Crew? The only change is that these days Victory's nothing but crap without the occasional Deadguy record to break things up. Sadly unlike Revelation, which used to be awesome but is now utter drivel.

Yeah, a friend that works there gave me a promo CD.  I found 2 of the songs tolerable.  That's of the whole 10 track CD.... which, I guess now that I think about it, is usually the average amount of tracks I can stomach from your basic "indie rock" band (see: the Boy Least Likely To)

No.  Victory actually has a more diverse roster than most people give them credit for.  However, the man who runs the label, Tony Brummel, is a total assbag, and their bands are treated like shit (especially the ones who take issue with Tony's business practices, who are punished by having any promotional support cut out from under them).

In the case of Deadguy, this is a mistake. Even the best of the rest are pretty unessential.

The reason I think Against Me! aren't anarchist is because of "Baby I'm An Anarchist" - the culmination of 150 years of struggle is not a broken window in a coffee shop.

i wasn't trying to say that that is the only way to be an anarchist, i was describing my view of, based on my encounters of, anarcho punks. of course you can be an anarchist and still buy things. with the way things currently are, its very hard to live without doing that. but beyond that, i feel that ones lifestyle should reflect their beliefs or politics. i just think it's sort of silly for a punk to talk about their anarchist beliefs and then go buy a shirt from wal mart. i suppose it's a personal thing. i don't feel comfortable buying from harmful corporations, just as a vegetarian doesn't feel comfortable eating meat, regardless of the fact that their refusal of it will do absolutely no harm to the trade.

and about against me, have you ever heard any of their other songs? preferably pre-reinventing? like, crime, vivada vis, the ep? i dont think you should let that song define them for you. i dont think it was intended to be taken seriously. i don't even think that he was implying that the whole of the anarchist system of thought could be summarized by a brick in a starbucks window. im pretty sure that when he wrote the song, he had in mind that almost anyone who was going to hear it already knew whatever he could say on the subject, so instead, he talked about some right-on things that are fun to sing along to. i dont think tom gabel is an idiot.

I don't wanna derail this thread and turn it into POLITICS EET FUCK though, so I will refrain from commenting further upon this.

yeah, i agree with that, so in the interests of the topic, i further recommend that everyone here listens to the pink lincolns.

I'm amazed that nobody's mentioned OM yet.  Basically, it's Sleep's bassist and drummer picking up where they left off back when they made "Dopesmoker."  "Variations on a Theme" and "Conference of the Birds" aren't "doom" per se, but people who like doom will probably enjoy them.

Seconds to Boris, SUNN0))), Sleep, Orange Goblin, Grand Magus, Bongzilla, Ufomammut, and Witchcraft.

Also, look into Witch (J. Mascis's new project) and Bardo Pond (which isn't really doom at all, but again, is very easily accessible to doom fans).

Clearly, I am a bit more into the stoner side of doom.  That said, I fully expect to be referring back to this thread for recommendations for quite some time.
