Jon, my hair is much longer than yours and obviously I'm a girl, but otherwise my hair basically does the same thing when I leave it alone (wild, loose curls).
There are a couple of things that I've found to help:
(1)
Paul Mitchell's Super Skinny Serum is incredibly good at calming frizz & relaxing wave.  I know there are other straightening serums and gels and whatnot, and probably some of them are just as good, but this was the first one I found to work and I've been pretty happy with it.  And it's not that expensive (comparatively, and considering that you use only a dime-sized amount per day).
(2) Blow drying, while using a comb to pull the hair away from your head, straight, is pretty effective.  Of course, you do run the risk of heat damage, like with a straightening iron, but it's generally faster than straightening the whole thing.  And maybe you already have a blow dryer?
