It isn't hard.  Just bleach it first.  I did it purple when I was pregnant and it worked nicely.  Pain in the butt to keep up with, due to fading, but it looked nice at the beginning.

Any recommendations on ways to flatten my hair a bit? My hair's gotten to the point where it's about 4 1/2 inches at its longest point and 2 1/2 at its shortest and there is absolutely nothing I can do with it short of taking a straightening iron to it (I tried this a week or two ago and kind of liked it, but don't own one of my own and I know doing so on a regular basis is terrible for hair) in an effort to get it not puffing out.

I've gone so far as getting it thinned out multiple times, but am at the point where I'm being told thinning it out much further is just going to result in frizzing. The best I can seem to do short of an actual hair straightener is towel drying, combing and then putting it under a wool hat for a full couple of hours.

For a reference point, this is the disaster that my hair is right this minute:

I'm going for something along these lines with a little less effort and strain on my hair:

Any recommendations?

What you are going for is not how your hair is Meant To Be (TM).  If it's too much for you, shorten it rather than trying to make it something else.

Dying your hair is a bad idea. It pretty much says "my personality is so wacky look at me I stand out" aka " I am kind of a bland person, but if my hair is a bright color I can hide it"

Jon, I think you are a handsome fellow, but that is not great hair. It's a really dated look, if you want something like that I am sure it is possible without looking like an anime character.

I don't see the anime parallel in what I'm going for. I can easily see it in the disaster that is my current hair.

For reference, I know my hair is capable of falling flat. I used to have longer hair, but I used to shave it on the sides and that's a look I don't want to touch at my age. It's also been about six years since I chopped it all off.

Okay, that one I can see. It's a temporary thing, though, at least. I'm currently planning to go a good bit longer (At least down past my eyes, but no longer than my jaw line) and am trying to handle the transitional period without going insane.

Jon, my hair is much longer than yours and obviously I'm a girl, but otherwise my hair basically does the same thing when I leave it alone (wild, loose curls).

There are a couple of things that I've found to help:
(1) Paul Mitchell's Super Skinny Serum is incredibly good at calming frizz & relaxing wave.  I know there are other straightening serums and gels and whatnot, and probably some of them are just as good, but this was the first one I found to work and I've been pretty happy with it.  And it's not that expensive (comparatively, and considering that you use only a dime-sized amount per day).

(2) Blow drying, while using a comb to pull the hair away from your head, straight, is pretty effective.  Of course, you do run the risk of heat damage, like with a straightening iron, but it's generally faster than straightening the whole thing.  And maybe you already have a blow dryer?

Jon, if you decide to just say fuck it and not mess with it anymore, PLEASE invest in a straightening iron.  It may not be great, but it's a vast improvement from that fluffball on your head, currently.

Your hair is so poofy and fluffy! Honestly, I don't think you should flatten it, but if you do, either get a straightening iron or get it relaxed. Or just have a massive faux hawk thing just to be silly. Or listen to Ozy.

ok, here's a picture. It's somewhat old, but I don't look very different now, and it's a good picture. It should be noted that I can actually grow (some) facial hair, despite my appearance. Definitely not a full beard or anything, but probably a goatee of some sort. I say probably because I've never really tried.

so, what do I do?

I'd just say to trim up the sides, but leave the top as is. I like the curls a lot but the shape of your hair right now makes you look like Fenton from Home Movies.

I am in dire need of a haircut at the moment. After a certain length it just goes all... puffy. It's got a slight curl to it that makes any sort of product next to useless, so I just end up looking like I've got a bad 1980s semi-mullet.

I just don't know what to get, or to just shave my hair off and have done with it.

Hello hair thread. I have some pretty long-ish hair for a guy, and I am thinking I'm going to chop some of it off. So my question to you all is, how much should I take off/how short should I go?

Thoughts?

I'm not going to go like, really short with it I don't think. Was considering something like shoulder or chin-ish length.

I have some but you won't like them 8-) *stands ready with sheep shears*

seriously. I can't stand to let my hair grow. I've awlyas dreamed of having my hair that length, and so am somewhat jealous even if you look like Nigel in the Young Ones. Maybe you should just trim it in the back and leave bangs? Of course that's sort of Emo. You'd have to suggest what you would like to have up tehre. Just don't shave it, neh?  My point is yu have nice hair so don't fuck it up. You could also go with that look you used to see during WWII where they trim it shortish on the sides but it's still fairly long on top. That way you can do lots of stuff with it depending.

I'd keep it at least shoulder-length.  That's really the only suggestion I have.  You might be able to pull of chin-length if you got some interesting hats (re: beanies, bowlers, the type of hats that hug the top of the head and have a short brim).

But definitely take care of the hair.  I have a friend who looks a lot like you, except his hair is in a kind of disgusting half-dread because he typically never washes it and just in general does not shower very often (he is a crust punk/kvlt kind of kid and is rarely at his house long enough to take a shower).

Try for something original, Silver and two other colors, any two is probably good. Pink, purple, black, dark blue, that range.

It doesn't sound like an inherently bad idea Emaline, have you ever styled it like that before?

Also, long time no see hair advice thread (that I still don't know the rules to).

Umm, for a while now after my little fiasco several months ago involving a drunken night and my friend's hair trimmer, I've been trying to correct the mistake of buzzing my hair so short, and I've thought for a while now about growing it out super long (the opposite extreme of previously). The main problem with this is that my hair is tending towards the 70's way of feathered out hair, and I don't see it stopping anytime soon. Should I keep growing it out or give up and cut it back down to a more manageable length? (also possibly getting rid of the so called 'abomination' that came from me trying to bleach it for the first time about a month ago as well).

Shorter(plus neckbeard)

Longer and bleached(minus glasses because of computer monitor glare)

Mission accomplished.

Perhaps I'll grow the beard back out - I'll see if I can tolerate the stages before that.

GUYS GUYS GUYS HALP.

I'm 20 and I already am starting to get some grey hairs. This is making me super sad. Should I dye my hair, or just let it keep going with the random, sparse greys? Also, my hair is really long and a boring mousy brown color.
