Yeah, but do you guys wear actual armor for the most part?
There isn't actually any armor requirements in what I do, so, getting hit with a full swing of a metal weapon is going to break some bones. Generally, having your bones broken turns you off of the sport. (Yeah, we call it a sport, it's less of a LARP more of a fight)
We're pretty much the same way about the whole sport vs. LARP thing - if it was LARP, then I'd go around calling myself Jonlaug of the Kongshird (king's guard), the freeman who fight to defend glory and home... whatever. We're just guys and girls who likes fighting with metal weapons a lot. And we don't require armour at all, but then we don't hit each other full force - the idea is that the hit should be felt, but is shouldn't hurt. Which means that we're pretty skilled in hitting fast and hard, but slowing it down just before impact. This has, over time, led to the sport evolving to something not looking anything like real medieval fighting at all, except from the equipment and the general idea of defeating the opponent.
Besides, I don't think we would be able to break bones. The swords are pretty authentic, except from the bluntness, which means that they weigh between 800 and 1200 grams (2 to 3 pounds - historically they weighed 2,5 to 3,5). These things were made to be fast and cut, not to break anything. Fighting with a sword which would be able to break bones even if it was blunt would make you unable to recover from a strike fast enough not to get
stabbed in the face.
We've been in this pretty great location fighting the last weekend, so I'll probably have some proper pics to post in just a couple of days.
