I motion that thread title change to "Let's have a fashion advice thread, let's not have a practicality/fiscal responsibility advice thread"

Listing what you carry in a purse doesn't relate to fashion anyways. That's about practicality. While looking fashionable, I guess.

Well I do need to find myself a purse that fits all my junk while still looking good. That has something to do with fashion!

I find my purse habits are cyclical. Small clutch -> Small Handbag -> Bigger hand bag -> Huge tote -> Fuck this noise (Small clutch).     I have been using what amounts to a wallet with a handle for 2 years now, but it looks terrible now.  I need a new purse thing but I can't find one like.  I keep finding small handbags, and I guess I could use one of them, but I still want another one of these to go in it so that I can just take the essentials with me to work and what not.
To make this advice related again:
Does anyone have a suggestion for a wallet with a strap?  I think they call them "wristlets."  I want one that is long enough I don't have to fold bills to put them in and that has slots for cards so everything isn't just tossed in there and preferably a little pocket for change.

Something like this could work.

You can find all sorts of bags like that on Etsy.

Look this is kind of a bad example because this is a Church's boot that undoubtedly costs exactly 1 arm+1 leg but look, I posted this a few pages ago

It is a similar style boot to the one you posted, except that it does not have a junior-prom toe (<3 that term so much Sam). They're out there.

Men, look at this toe! Learn it, love it, this is the shape the toes of yr dress shoes should be.

Personally I wouldn't want anything bulky in my jeans pockets, like a phone or anything, because it digs into my hips uncomfortably. Nodaisho, you have to remember that men and women have different shaped hips, so different hip-covering requirements, and that's generally where the pockets go.
Only on women pants. On men pants, the pockets go down at least onto the thigh, I imagine it depends on the inseam length of the pants. But yeah, girl jeans the pocket tends to end while still on the hips. I wouldn't want to be carrying anything there, there's too much motion and whenever anything in my pockets works itself up there, it really digs in whenever I sit down. Especially when I'm driving. On the thigh, as long as you don't have a key angled to jab at your thigh, it doesn't really dig.

And until recently my lower-body silhouette looked more like you would think of a woman's looking than a man's.

If you really think that the lack of pockets in pants for women is a practical thing, why is it that a lot of jackets for women have fake pockets?

I carry a bag everywhere, and if I'm going out to dance or something I usually keep my stuff in a tiny messenger purse, which works perfectly! Well, except last Saturday when everything flew out of it and I lost it, but you know, that could have happened with pockets too. Usually when I go out I don't wear clothes with pockets anyway, so.

On the top of my wishlist for Christmas this year is this backpack though, because I carry so much stuff to and from school every day, my shoulders are starting to hurt. Plus, it's so adorable, really durable, waterproof and practical.

Dudes. I have the hardest time buying shoes and it really fucking sucks. See, I have huge feet, size 13.5 US and wide too. I find almost every brand too narrow and I don't have the patience to properly break shoes in.
And my right foot is slightly smaller than my left so all my left shoes fit perfectly and all the right one rub badly and suck shit in hell...

HOW CAN I SOLVE MY SHOE WOES?

Since only one person has offered any other solutions to this, I will go ahead and suggest shoe inserts.

Also my handbag is not exactly a handbag, it is a black canvas messenger bag from an army disposal store, and I sewed a liner that has lots of nice pockets in it. I keep looking at handbags (and sometimes buying them) but I will never love a bag more than I love my big ugly shoulder bag. It fits everything.

lol kris I know like 20 people who got those this summer, they're cute! big thing on my very hip campus.

I have a northface bag that I got at the outdoors shop. I looked forever for a cute, functional, vegan bag that I liked and couldn't find one, and sometimes I ski with a pack/hike cliffs so i can tie my boots/skis to this bag and it'll hold my lunch so whatever. added bonus, once I spilled beer on it and you totally can't tell.

Yeah, I wanted to post something like that boot last night but the first one that I found was from a Neiman Marcus link and cost like $500 because some Italian sounding dude apparently doesn't have enough money yet. So I said fuck it and went to sleep instead.

I have a bright pink one at home, and I like it, but only during the winter when I have a fairly thick layer of clothing between my shoulders and those straps. At least if I'm going to carry something more than an extra sweater and a water bottle, because they are not very comfortable at all. But they're good for going skiing and stuff.

(My best friend's on the right.)

My backpack for school ended up being a fairly unfashionable Jansport backpack, just because I couldn't find any affordable, nice-looking backpacks I liked that actually seemed like they would be comfortable with lots of stuff in them.

I bought chinos (black)

and such as a western style shirt with pearl snaps (black)

Fashion thread, I am now Johnny Cash. This is Good Thing.

Also I came really close to buying a pair of brown Levis cords, but they didn't have them in my size. Fashion thread how do we feel about brown cords?

They are pretty ok but need to be washed often or they completely lose their shape.

I used to wear brown cords when I worked at the coffee shop, it was great, you could never tell when they were dirty (which was all of the time). I liked them but some people called me on them being unfashionable. Or maybe that was because I wore my filthy work pants out afterwards. I dunno. I like 'em. I think I threw them out though.

I don't carry a bag when I go out at night. I just wear jeans or a jacket with pockets. You only need some cash, your ATM card, bus ticket, ID, front door key and a lipgloss then.

And phone, passport (at least I do, it's my only ID), a little more makeup than lipgloss since I'm vain and my face gets shiny when I'm drinking and dancing, and a small pocket hairbrush. I can't fit all that in my jacket pockets, and I usually hang my jacket in the cloakroom anyway since carrying a giant winter jacket on the dancefloor is not very handy. I guess it's just a matter of priorities, I find small messenger purses really practical.

All you ladies complaining that jeans don't fit you because you have curves and that skinny people have it easier because that is the shape jeans are generally tailor to, I would like to complain.

I am a skinny person. I am generally the shape that people are referring to when they say things like that. I am not overly curvy, and generally have no problem getting clothes that fit me. In fact, I have a pair of jeans on right now that I had absolutely no trouble in choosing and they fit really well. I tried on about twelve pairs of expensive jeans today (I actually lost count because there were so many) and walked away with none of them. They were either the wrong size in general, or had a big gap at the waistband, were all baggy around my bottom, or were baggy around my legs.

I even tried on some that were supposed to be tailored more at the waist so that they wouldn't gap (and they didn't) and I could barely get them on over my hips and they were all baggy at the back. At the end of it I was exhausted and didn't really overly want any of the jeans I had tried on and was upset. Why is it I can buy $80 jeans that fit me well easily, but the more expensive jeans that are supposed to be better quality and fit are all stupidly cut and make me feel bad about my body shape? How does that work?

Please, next time you are complaining about how things don't fit you, think of me and know that skinny, not very curvy people are having just as many problems as you.

Heaps of skirts and dresses don't have pockets, dogg. I think I have one skirt out of about 10, and no dresses out of about 6, that have pockets. They are easy to sew in if you're making your own skirts though.

I have a skirt that has pockets in it and if I put my phone in there it makes that side bulge out and the skirt doesn't sit properly. If it was a thin jersey-type dress like some of the things I sell at work with pockets, the weight o the phone would drag the material down and it would stretch and sit funny. Most of my jeans have back pockets not deep enough to fit my phone properly so it sticks out the top of the pocket and is easy to see and easier to steal.

I am not going to leave my phone at home just because it doesn't fit into my clothes properly.

edit: now my rant about clothes has been lost to the previous page. Dammit.

And there are a lot of things that look like they have pockets, but actually don't. Kind of like some suit jackets for men.

And I have seen girl jeans that could barely fit my 2"x3" mp3 player in the pocket, you can't fit much of anything in those. Credit cards, ID, phone? Nope. Those tiny pockets also have the problem of being placed poorly. You know how when something rides up in your pocket and ends up near the top it's uncomfortable to sit down until you fix it? Girl jeans only have that part of the pocket, which is why some girls don't use their front pockets at all, which is why there isn't any demand for full-sized pockets, which is why there aren't any girl jeans with comfortable pockets, which is why some girls don't use their front pockets alt all.

I'm not sure how rear pockets are, I never use mine so I never think about them.

You do uh... know that in most of those things, you can open the pocket and cut out the stitching so that your pocket is actually functional, right?

I keep my iPhone in the front left pocket of my jeans. It's pretty comfortable and I get upset when it's not there. I don't ever use my back pockets because that ruins my butt aesthetics.

Actually it is.

Cords, eh?

You probably don't want to know that my favourite jeans in the early 70s were a pair of Levi flared hipster (the old meaning) cords in maroon with a 2 1/2" wide tooled leather belt; worn with an Indian cotton seersucker shirt (buttoned as a ladies' shirt, though sold in a men's store).

Heh!

I found a site! It's pretty centered around a very classic men's wardrobe appearance but it's got some really nice stuff on suits, which are one of the things that really should just look classically good.

Jens I must've linked that thing like 100 separate times in this thread previously. PAY ATTENTION.

Some of them you can, some of them you can't. I don't know why these things make me so angry, they just do.

That A Tailored Suit site is run by one of the Thick As Thieves guys, right? Or am I misremembering?

Nah, it's a separate MTM suit/shirt/coat site run by a guy named Antonio, who is also the style columnist for artofmanliness.

Okay. I thought there was a link between AoM and that website. Not sure why I thought TaT and that website were linked.

And I didn't even mention wearing the hippie bell on a ribbon that my brother brought me back from his year in California at the end of the 60s... (he had a sabbatical working at UCLA)

Cords, eh?

You probably don't want to know that my favourite jeans in the early 70s were a pair of Levi flared hipster (the old meaning) cords in maroon with a 2 1/2" wide tooled leather belt

We sell these pants, belt included, in the ladies' section of Macy's. I kid you not.

I am getting this pattern:

http://www.etsy.com/listing/58661684/2-pdf-patterns-sewer-friendly-pattern-no

So that I can make a purse out of this fabric:

http://www.etsy.com/listing/64540292/mulberry-orchid-ereader-zipper-case-joel?ref=v1_other_2

Because no one seems to make what I want in that fabric ever.

It's gonna be so cute! I just need to decide on a lining fabric and a button or something to go with it.

i just found out warby parker ships to canada now! ...after spending like two days corresponding with a friend who went back to california for the holidays trying to work out how to ship a pair of glasses over to his house. oops. so, in light of this new relevation i finally ordered a new pair of glasses (these) which is great because my vision is actually really, really horrific now from reading pdfs and answering emails all day every day. i'm pretty much completely blind at night now. oh well! grad school may have destroyed my eyes but at least i'm still fashionable.

Hey Neko, if that is the style of bags you like, can I just suggest my aunt's shop? You might like some of her things. My sister has one of her bags (as she says they are smaller than they look on the dress form) and she uses it all the time now. http://www.etsy.com/shop/jhfabriccreations

Hi fashion thread! I got cowboy boots!

I'm actually in a hotel in Tuscon right now, so pictures will have to wait until I get home tomorrow. Actually, sometime next week. You know, Christmas and all. but still. Boots!

bainidhe: Thanks, I'll check it out!

I seem to have a thing for purses. I've spent a good few hours looking for them on the internets lately. Once I can get a decent sewing machine I think I'll start making them to sell - unfortunately that's probably a ways off.

Edit: Heyyyy you guys are in Maryland! So am I. Woo.
