Coldplay - X&Y

People were expecting so much from this album; less than raving crits of genius and sales under 5X platinum would be considered a disappointment. Although more than satisfying, Coldplay's new album is still leaning towards their old 'sound' - although with a more mainstream edge. Not exactly revolutionary. They seem to erk from being even mentioned in the same sentence as U2, but Chris Martin's vocals in a number of the songs on X&Y completely mirror Bono's in the likes of Joshua Tree. They've lost the surrealist ethereal dream feel from Parachutes and A Rush of Blood To The Head. It's as if someone has shot Chris Martin in the head and let him drift down to earth. I'm sure you've all heard Speed of Sound on the radio it's the most 'Clocks-esque' on the album. All in all - it's still a damn good 'driving in the rain at night' CD. Buy it for a pleasurable listen, not an OK Computer revolution.

Growing-Live CD
These guys are one of my favorites right now, though one thing I've always wondered about is why they are so often compared to instru-metal groups like Isis or Pelican when their sound on records seems a fair bit prettier and more ambient. This Live album answered my question. The first few tracks sounded not vastly dis-similar to the recorded versions I've heard on their albums but on track five they simply exploded into a barrage of truly crushing droned out riffs.

Mammal and Hive Mind-I've Been Sick CS
Really depressing noise jams. Made me feel like it was a gloomy january day in june.

Total Life-S/T CS
One of the members of Growing does some solo jams. First side is pretty noisy and repetitive. Like the second side better, a great deal prettier but by no means ambient.

Rossz Csillag Allat Szuletett is an outrageously awesome album, and the fact you own it makes me happy. Also, Tosca, Thievery Corporation, M.I.A, Boom Bip, and Roots Manuva get you yet more bonus points, even though the Cosmic Game wasn't great. It has a few good tracks on it, but the hundreds of guest vocalists were a mistake, no doubt.

That and the fact that there were no songs with Pam Bricker, which is just sad considering she killed herself right before the album was released.

It's weird to me that one man can put out a decent album and then release an unbelievable piece of excrement like "Winnipeg is a Frozen Shithole" within a two month span.

Don't forget that he put out Infolepsy in December as well. The man has a gruelling release schedule. It's not great either, too much of the Gabber end of breakcore, and not enough of the Drill n Bass. I like the beats to be all over the place, not 230 times a minute.

In other news, I just bought the Reagenz album. That shit is what ambient is all about, my friend. Awesome.

They're coming out with an album and releasing it in 3 different versions. One is the regular style, another is with a full band (guitars, keyboards), and the third is a female cover record or something. XP

I don't mind my beats being chopped and broken and played with, but I think that the Amen is a bit played out. It's 2005, find a different sample.

Gabber is the reason that people who hate electronic music, hate electronic music.

My favorite ambience lately: Fennesz - Venice, Marsen Jules - Herbstlaub (although the latter is borderline fluxion in its minimalism).

ISIS : Celestial

Isis = awesome = enough said.

Same as above w/ cool remix track by JK Broadrick who also has a remix on the Oceanic: Remixes & Reintepretations double-disc.

ATMOSPHERE : Seven's Travels

Really cool hip hop/rap CD. Some awesome samples went into it, and more than a few parts reminded me of Sage Francis for some reason.

TEAM SLEEP : Self Titled

Waited ages for this, not dissappointed. Really cool mix of trip-hop and acoustic/electric rock. Chino has a lot more room to show off his vocals and the guest appearances are just as impressive. He also gets a chance to act just as an instrumentalist on Tomb Of Liegia, where he does the piano/keyboard work. Vocals on that track are taken care of by Mary Timony, awesome voice. Random fact, bass work on the album is done by the former bassist of Tinfed.

Fairly good epic doom-death from America of all places, but the lameness of the lyrics make me cringe. "Watching and waiiiiiiiting, waiiiiiiting and waaaatching!"

Shape of Despair-Angels of Distress I love funeral doom, and SoD is one of the best new funeral bands out there. A wall of depressive heaviness.

and Enslaved-Below the Lights Maybe my new favorite black metal band. Progressiveness mixes perfectly with songwriting, and brutality and melody in all the proper portions. Classic, though I hear that Isa is even better.
