KharBevNor:
Partly, partly...

Seriously though, try out different stuff. From where you are, I started listening to Metallica, Arch Enemy and Cradle of Filth, which has in a round-about way led me to all sorts of metal, rock, folk, neo-classical, goth, darkwave, punk, electronic, progressive, experimental etc. music that falls outside and, in my opinion above, a lot of what you'd see in your Pitchfork media. It's the fact that I can't imagine my life without all this highly interesting and amazingly kick-ass music. I can't imagine how I'd get my inspiration for art and my own music without music that celebrates the power of individual spirit and imagination, I can't imagine what ideas I'd have about spirituality and religion without hearing, to me, breathtakingly beautiful works like 'One Rode to Asa Bay' and 'Song to Pan'. I can't imagine who I'd BE without my music. I would just like to see other people take that route.

I dunno, I suppose everyone would like people to see the world like they do.

Kai:
I'd love to send people down my route of "Woah that music is weird. THey're on shrooms and household cleaners". However, I don't even remember how I got here, so just go get some Zappa and Residents and Primus and whatnot.

Schmendrick:
Do Make Say Think
Most Serene Republic

I love them, but let your ears be the judge

destructotroninator:
I'd recommend Facing New York. The following is their description of...themselves. "Rhodes-heavy punk-prog artpop that channels Zep, the Police, and Dismemberment Plan." Their debut full length is out soon too, so if you like, it's not that long a wait before you get even more goodness.

Hey!  Two thirds of that band was Aussie!

And the same guy was in Split Enz too, they still count as Kiwi bands tho ;)

As for more bands: Warren Zevon and Shihad [aka Pacifier] are also pretty good.
