31G? No fucking clue. It has something to do with A: Nazis or, maybe they just thought it sounded neat (Like the 3 5 0 1 2 5 GO thing)

EDIT: Looked it up. "31G 350125 was the PoW serial number assigned to Rudolf Hess after his capture", or so says this site:http://www.lwtua.free-online.co.uk/shadowplay/joyd/warsaw.html

Tell your brother that his taste in metal is absolutely FUCKING HORRIBLE. Seriously, Poison the Well are awful. Converge are horrendous. Norma Jean needs to die of AIDS. I'm serious here.

I'm going to agree with every word of this except the implication that Converge is metal. They're hardcore, not metal, and bad hardcore at that.

Nevermore - This Godless Endeavor

Maybe we should make a list of GOOD metal albums. I think we did already, but there is no harm in educating people further.

Faun again, this time the track's called Konigin

Except the "o" has those two little dots over it, and I spent so long trying to find the right button combination for that that the next song's playing now, which means I'm actually listening to Ilaria Graziano - "Christmas in the Silent Forest" now

Hey, I don't like Boston for no reason. They just have the distinction of being the poppiest band in my collection (unless you count the Beatles, of course), but their guitarist was still pretty fucking good.

Also, Rainbow - Man on the Silver Mountain

I've said it before, but this song needs an old-school metal cover like no fucking other.

I just take issue with Panic! At The Disco becuase they're so bloody derivative. And it pisses me off when groups have song titles which are longer than the bloody sngs and are quotes from films. 'We can reference obscure films! YES WE ARE UNIQUE AND COOL BECAUSE OF THIS." Plus I saw them live at a festival (and I was dragged kicking and screaming by my mates to the stage) and they sucked like the girls in Bangkok.

First off, I'm not being a snob, I actually think those bands are terrible.

Poison the Well and Norma Jean fall under the nu metal/metalcore genre hybrid, and while it can be done right (very, VERY rarely), most of it is absolutely terrible, and those two bands are included. The general gist of it is, these guys' idea of playing metal is not coming up with any remotely interesting riffs (or god forbid, solo once in a while), but instead mash mega-distorted power chords while the singer performs the least appealing part of metal (toneless screaming). Not to mention that the songwriting in nu metal/metalcore is always horribly unoriginal, derivitive, and quite frankly, really fucking annoying. Not to mention this type of band takes themselves utterly and completely seriously, which is really not what metal is about.

I wouldn't call Converge metal or even metalcore. They're more just hardcore punk. And they still suck, in my opinion, although I don't hate them nearly as much as Poison the Well or Norma Jean.

Basically, if you want to know what sort of metal to NOT listen to, go to this year's Ozzfest. Essentially, the entire lineup (with the exception of Lacuna Coil and Strapping Young Lad, the latter of which won't even be playing the entire tour) is a gigantic fucking joke.

Hey, Black Label Society and Between the Buried and Me aren't bad.

OK, let's break this down:

UTTER SHIT (ranked in order of decreasing crappiness):
Norma Jean
Atreyu
Hatebreed
Disturbed
System of a Down
All That Remains
Bleeding Through
Unearth

DECENT:
Black Label Society
Between the Buried and Me (I'm gonna take your word on this)

GOOD:
Strapping Young Lad (And they're not playing the entire tour anyway)
Lacuna Coil

Bands I didn't count but have absolutely no interest in discovering due to a quick browsing of their samples:
The Red Chord
Walls of Jericho
A Life Once Lost
Full Blown Chaos (although, they were touring with Exodus, so they may not suck as bad as I suspect they do)

The point is, Sharon and the other organizers of the tour select the bands on basis of how many tickets they'll move, not any imagined standards of quality. I mean, when you have Disturbed and System of a Down on your tour, and they're not even the worst bands there, then you know there is a serious problem.

And Ozzy is a pitiful shadow of better days that would probably physically pain me to watch.

Well I am just discovering metal, so I have no idea what is "real" metal and what isn't. All I can say is that I don't like old-school much, stuff like Iron Maiden, King Diamond and Testament doesn't appeal to me. As of now I have found four metal bands that I like, Entombed and the new Opeth album, The Psyke Project(which might be metalcore, I don't know) and that danish demo band Brudevalsen. I need to get some Edge of Sanity since I think I am partial to skandinavian metal and Khar said that they were similar to Brudevalsen whom I love. Oh and I also really want some Nile :)

After listening to Wolverine Blues it is quite nice to switch to:

The Notwist - Neon Golden

I haven't quite forsaken that elusive genre called indie.

The Red Chord

I actually quite like The Red Chord. They're pretty brutal, and not every one of their songs sounds entirely identical. They're not really metal, but they're pretty good, very grindy at points, and I likes the grind.

Basically for standard sort of metalcore/screamo/whatever stuff the only way for me to like the band is if they're absolutely ridiculously insane. Old Blood Brothers, SikTh etc. Also, I like Blessed By a Broken Heart, but they are a joke band (Their cover of the ABC song MUST be heard).

@Kai: I <3 Placebo. Get their latest one, Meds. 'tis good, and has one of my favourite Placebo songs on it (Infra-Red).

I dunno, I still kind of don't like Åkerfeldt's clean vocals, which is why you must avoid Damnation like the plague. Blackwater Park is supposed to be good, as well most of their old stuff.

It might be that you just don't like Opeth :)

Opeth aren't really that amazing, depends on what you've heard before. I LIKE Opeth, but I don't worship them.

Get 'Pale Folklore' by Agalloch if you want some really excellent progressive dark metal. They have the masterful, doom-metal derived understanding of the concept of good pacing that Opeth in many ways lack: Opeth has always been a band that has good ideas, but isn't quite sure what to do with them: many of their songs sound artificially put together. Agalloch not so.

And because as I wrote this I HAD to listen to that gloriously built-up intro:

Agalloch - She Painted Fire Across the Skyline Part 1

Oh, and now, because I'm just going out in a second,

Agalloch - She Painted Fire Across the Skyline Part 3

"I saw the nightfall,
It called to me like a river of shadows,
It sang to me with the cries of a thousand ravens
that blackened the sky as they took flight and sank SOOOOOOOOL"
