Been a while since I've posted, but I'll try to make it worth your while. Public Image Ltd., John Lydon's band after The Sex Pistols, is just so much better that it's not even funny. Sure, The Pistols were influential, but this is actually good. One of the greatest post-punk/experimental albums ever made.

Public Image Ltd. - Second Edition

Quote from: AMG
PiL managed to avoid boundaries for the first four years of their existence, and Metal Box is undoubtedly the apex. It's a hallmark of uncompromising, challenging post-punk, hardly sounding like anything of the past, present, or future. Sure, there were touchstones that got their imaginations running -- the bizarreness of Captain Beefheart, the open and rhythmic spaces of Can, and the dense pulses of Lee Perry's productions fueled their creative fires -- but what they achieved with their second record is a completely unique hour of avant-garde noise. Originally packaged in a film canister as a trio of 12" records played at 45 rpm, the bass and treble are pegged at 11 throughout, with nary a tinge of midrange to be found. It's all scrapes and throbs (dubscrapes?), supplanted by John Lydon's caterwauling about such subjects as his dying mother, resentment, and murder. Guitarist Keith Levene splatters silvery, violent, percussive shards of metallic scrapes onto the canvas, much like a one-armed Jackson Pollock. Jah Wobble and Richard Dudanski lay down a molasses-thick rhythmic foundation throughout that's just as funky as Can's Czukay/Leibezeit and Chic's Edwards/Rodgers. It's alien dance music. Metal Box might not be recognized as a groundbreaking record with the same reverence as Never Mind the Bollocks, and you certainly can't trace numerous waves of bands who wouldn't have existed without it like the Sex Pistols record. But like a virus, its tones have sent miasmic reverberations through a much broader scope of artists and genres.

My old roommate just came across this and I have been infatuated with it ever since.

Scissors for Lefty - Underhanded Romance

No quote on the album itself, but here is a write-up on the band in general:

Quote
AMG: Peter Krimmel (piano/vocals/guitar), Robby Garza (guitar/bass), Bryan Garza (vocals/guitar), and James Krimmel (drums/bass) comprised the initial incarnation of the flirty indie rock band Scissors for Lefty. Part Brit-pop and part indie rock, and with a campy persona and dreamy lyrics to match, Scissors for Lefty were a great addition to the post-punk revival of the new millennium. They played shows with the likes of Grandaddy, the Coral, Mary Timony, Pedro the Lion, and Diamond Nights. They self-released their first album, Bruno, in 2005. A performance at the annual South by Southwest conference in Austin, TX, followed in spring 2006. A few months later they added Stevie Garza (Bryan's brother) on bass and set to work on their Rough Trade debut, Underhanded Romance, which came out in June of the following year.

There is smiley vomit, there is picture vomit, and now it appears, there is also music vomit.

Ben, you don't have to up 10 albums at once.  If you really feel you must, then by all means, go ahead, but in this quantity, perhaps opt to not include photos as to lower bandwidth costs on jeph.

What the hell? Possibly the most baseless complaint ever. The guy used small pictures that were hardly obnoxious, and uploaded a lot of great music. Quit your whining.

Good job Ben! Strong boarding.

nah, there were no links or pictures at first.

Scissors for Lefty are pretty much the friendliest band ever, I have danced with Bryan twice onstage. They're cool guys, love to play Merced a bunch, a fun live act and make music that is good despite its obviously derivative nature.

I was just trying to be considerate...the mods lock the photo thread every once in a while because of bandwidth concerns, and I figured since he uploaded 10+ albums that he didn't need pictures for all of them.  At least not the ones that were already posted.  He's not doing anything wrong, I'm just trying to help lower upkeep in a small way.

You're uploading excellent stuff, I'm just a little paranoid, I guess.

Thanks to the person that posted Say Hi To Your Mom. I just heard one of their songs a couple weeks ago, definitely like them.

Figured I'd finish posting the music I downloaded from the radio station a couple weeks ago, before zipping up last week's batch. Don't know if anyone's into The Blow, but I've got three CDs from them. One of my friends is really into them, so I had to upload them for her.

This is really another gift post of Albums I have for Jackie (<3) that I thought I would share with the thread.

Telecommunication Breakdown by Emergency Broadcast Network

Code: [Select]
http://www.mediafire.com/?bczhd1v4yyx
Quote from: AMG
this is a tremendously ambitious side project for Meat Beat Manifesto's frontman Jack Dangers, who seems like an ideal producer for this album, one that is so deeply rooted in found samples, TV clips, and soundbites. Using existing media as a prime source of material for much of this album, there are hardly any formal musicians in Emergency Broadcast Network, but rather a collective of producers, programmers, and audio/visual operators that create new works by utilizing a musicians' ear, if not a musical instrument. Two tracks feature a slightly more traditional approach: First visiting producer Brian Eno gives a little creepy breathing room for the track "Homicidal Schizophrenic," with guest guitarist Jamie West-Oram, ex-member of The Fixx. Also on the guest list is the ever-prolific Bill Laswell, who puts in his two cents for the track "Shoot the Mac-10," an inner-city tribute to a lightweight automatic weapon that features the surprisingly gritty rap skills of '80s legend Grandmaster Melle Mel, whose teeth have only sharpened over the years. As for the rest of the album, Dangers typically likes to stuff a record to the seams with soundbites and audio clips, and here he also adds commercial interruptions between several tracks. Telecommunication Breakdown is an almost overindulgent showcase for his style, but, due to the nature of this concept album, its excessiveness is what gives this album its wings. Not to be missed.

Little Feat - Dixie Chicken
Quote
Following Roy Estrada's departure during the supporting tour for Sailin' Shoes, Lowell George became infatuated with New Orleans R&B and mellow jamming, all of which came to a head on their third album, 1973's Dixie Chicken. Although George is firmly in charge - he dominates the record, writing or co-writing seven of the 10 songs - this is the point where Little Feat found its signature sound as a band, and no album they would cut from this point on was too different from this seductive, laid-back, funky record. But no album would be quite as good, either, since Dixie Chicken still had much of the charming lyrical eccentricities of the first two albums, plus what is arguably George's best-ever set of songs. Partially due to the New Orleans infatuation, the album holds together better than Sailin' Shoes and George takes full advantage of the band's increased musical palette, writing songs that sound easy but are quite sophisticated, such as the rolling "Two Trains," the gorgeous, shimmering "Juliette," the deeply soulful and funny "Fat Man in the Bathtub" and the country-funk of the title track, which was covered nearly as frequently as "Willin'." In addition to "Walkin' All Night," a loose bluesy jam by Barrere and Bill Payne, the band also hauls out two covers which fit George's vibe perfectly: Allan Toussaint's slow burner "On Your Way Down" and "Fool Yourself," which was written by Fred Tackett, who later joined a reunited Feat in the '80s. It all adds up to a nearly irresistible record, filled with great songwriting, sultry grooves, and virtuosic performances that never are flashy. Little Feat, along with many jam bands that followed, tried to top this album, but they never managed to make a record this understated, appealing and fine.

Anyone who likes Exile On Main Street should check this out.

Gang Starr - Step In The Arena
Quote
The album on which DJ Premier and Guru perfected the template that would launch them into underground stardom and a modicum of mainstream success. Guru's deadpan monotone delivery was shockingly different from other early-'90s MCs, many of who were either substituting charisma for substance or engaging in hardcore "realism" without really commenting on black inner-city life or offering ways to alter the situation for the better. But it is Guru who sounded like the real clarion call of and to the street on Step in the Arena ("Why bring ignorance/where we're inviting you to get advancement," he intones on "Form of Intellect"). Step in the Arena was the first real mature flowering of his street-wise sagacity. His voice would grow more assured by the next album, but here Guru imparts urban wisdom of a strikingly visible variety. It's easy to allow yourself to get caught up in the fantasy of hardcore rap, but it is somewhat more involving and disorienting to hear truth that avoids exaggeration or glorification. Guru is not easy on any aspect of the inner city, from the "snakes" that exploit the community ("Execution of a Chump") to those that are a product of it ("Just to Get a Rep"), and the result is a surprising but hard-fought compassion ("Who's Gonna Take the Weight?" pleads for the acceptance of responsibility, for not taking the easy path). He seems to have somehow developed a hopefulness out of the bleak surroundings. DJ Premier was already near the top of his game at this early point. His production seems less jazz-fueled on Step in the Arena, opting more for spare guitar lines and tight beats, as well as his unmistakable vocal cut-up style of scratching for a slightly warped and out-of-phase soundscape.

Guillemots - Through The Window Pane

Quote
With their EP From the Cliffs, the Guillemots introduced themselves as daring, energetic, inventive performers for whom traditional pop notions of harmony and rhythm could be discarded, or at least tweaked, if a better opportunity presented itself. And despite all the warning signs of pretension and inaccessibility, the Guillemots were able to create in From the Cliffs something that was very listenable and fun. Of course, there were problems, but they were problems of over-ambition and -eagerness, and they seemed easy enough to remedy without disrupting the band's rather intricate overall sound. So it comes as somewhat of a surprise that their debut full-length, Through the Windowpane, is a little empty in comparison. Instead of following the lead of the standout EP tracks "Trains to Brazil" and "Made-Up Lovesong #43" (both of which were singles and both of which are among the best cuts on the album), most of the other songs on Through the Windowpane take a slower, more melancholic, and sparser approach, presenting an almost sonically disconcertingly juxtaposition. "If the World Ends," "Redwings," "Little Bear," and "Blue Would Still Be Blue" are all very quiet, relying more on the strength of leader Fyfe Dangerfield's voice -- which is often mixed at a very low level -- instead of any kind of instrumental arrangement, and in doing so the albums ignores the strength of the band as a whole and ends up as something fairly ordinary sounding, while letting predictable chords and phrases dictate the tone instead of the band's musical ingenuity. The fact that many of these songs are well over three or even four minutes doesn't help the fact that they seem to drag on without ever doing anything, or going anywhere, or showing us anything we haven't seen before. Because the Guillemots are certainly capable of giving us what we haven't got. They're interested in, even obsessed with, the idea of physical space (particularly through the imagery of a windowpane, which is alluded to numerous times throughout the album) and of making space where there is confinement, but it is these slower, emptier songs that are the most claustrophobic, the most constrained, and the most forced. However, and perhaps this just attests to the talents of the musicians and the arranging skills of Dangerfield, their faster, more complex pieces -- including and even exemplified by the 12-minute cinematic opus "São Paulo," which moves from Morricone to Brubeck to symphonic swells to a Latin groove -- give the feeling of expanse and freedom. Nothing is tied down, everything can move freely and where ever it wants, yet each comes together as part of a very well-constructed whole. It's adventurous but it's still accessible, and contrasts sharply with the near stifling silence of the other pieces. But there's still a kind of inconsistency in the development of Through the Windowpane, an inconsistency that can't quite work itself out in sweeping strings and vaguely dissonant chords, and unfortunately, this diminishes the power of what the album really could be.

The album is better than that review says, check it out for yourself.

This album is old and famous, but it isn't totally ubiquitous like some far less deserving albums so here we go:

Quote from: AMG
"It wasn't a hit, but Forever Changes continues to regularly appear on critics' lists of the top ten rock albums of all time, and it had an enormously far-reaching and durable influence that went way beyond chart listings. The best fusion of folk-rock and psychedelia, it features Arthur Lee's trembling vocals, beautiful melodies, haunting orchestral arrangements, and inscrutable but poetic lyrics, all of which sound nearly as fresh and intriguing upon repeated plays. One of rock's most organic, flowing masterpieces, every song has a lingering, shimmering beauty, including the two penned by the band's other talented songwriter/guitarist/singer, Bryan MacLean."
There's a favorable P4k review of the reissue? It's on a bunch of people's all-time favorites lists. Basically it's really fucking good.
Code: [Select]
http://www.mediafire.com/?0obwzdjbtx3Oh yeah, this is the 2001 reissue with 7 bonus tracks. Supposedly there's going to be another one this year. Anyway, enjoy.

I have decided to skip the uploading part and just search and post albums i wish to share, unless i cant find them, then upload them.
Sarcasm?

I thought so at first, but Goo already has 50 downloads and it's not on Mediafire.

That's not cool. Upload your own stuff, and check the tags and see if the file is decent quality. And complete.

(And sorry if you were being sarcastic. But people do this all the time.)

Balmorhea - River Arms

Quote from: pitchfork
think of Balmorhea as a freshman-level seminar in making pretty music that works on multiple levels. Most everyone should make it through class and carry something away, while others may use it as an inlet into deeper lessons: On the surface, Balmorhea's music is gorgeous, dynamic, and emotive, a bit like Sigur Rós with an interest in understatement. Rivers Arms combines piano, acoustic and electric guitars, banjo, strings, and samples into short passes, so that nothing's too consuming or exhausting.

Fetish by Joan Jett

Code: [Select]
http://www.mediafire.com/?dvy9ty2wmx1
Quote from: AMG
By 1999, riot grrrl pioneer Joan Jett was all but reduced to being a nostalgia act. The unfortunate thing was, she still had plenty of good songs left in her, even if her days of hitting the charts were long gone. In fact, she had more aggressiveness in her than ever, as Fetish proves. Placed on the compilation album of the same name, "Fetish" features Jett screaming lyrics that -- for the first time in her recorded career -- truly touch on the obscene. "You look good in latex, get it off, we're having rough sex," Jett rasps, increasingly bordering on dominatrix imagery with such come-ons as "relax while I pound your ass" and "restrain while I f*ck your head." Though Jett was never one to shy away from testing boundaries, this is easily her most blatantly controversial material to date. Sonically, Fetish is just as striking -- it's an unpolished, industrial metal affair that sounds amazingly comfortable, given the fact that it is being played by a middle-aged-'80s rocker. Perhaps that's what makes a song such as "Fetish" so intriguing -- while this is certainly not the Joan Jett of yesteryear, she sounds comfortable enough to make the music and lyrics work. It's a killer track, proving that Jett not only has plenty of life left in her tank, but she's still got an abundance of creativity and surprises in store.

Sorry, but I'm going to do this right now, because I don't plan on downloading and then uploading Destroyer's discography right now but I know there are people in this thread that would want it. From what I have downloaded though, it's between 192 and 256 kbps.

The song that I have from them has their name as Say Hi (To Your Mom), and that's what I've been seeing them as. Thanks a ton for all of these by the way. I have a CD to upload in the mother theme as soon as I get back to my external hard disk.

Boris - Statement 7"

Code: [Select]
http://www.mediafire.com/?ndcfshatmym
Quote from: Southern Lord
Boris returns with their first non-collaborative recordings in 2 years! The new track "Statement" is a preview of things to come on their forthcoming full-length album: "Smile" to be released by Southern Lord in April of this year! The B side of this 7": "Floorshaker" is exclusive to this vinyl and will NOT be available anywhere else. Pressing is limited to 3,000 copies total. The two tracks here are a appropriate progression from the sounds and direction on the last studio full-length: Pink.

Limited release on Southern Lord (3000 copies). I picked one up on eBay for like $10 or so.

That was my first go at buying vinyl on eBay (and also the first new vinyl I've bought in a LONG time). I wish I'd gotten in on the initial selling from Southern Lord. It was only $5.

This was just released today.  I did a search and didn't see it in here so I figured it was safe to post it, plus it is another opportunity to gay up the forum with <3s because Jackie wanted this album.  :)

be weary of Agalloch. It's not bad, just very tame. Ulver + Coldplay springs to mind.
