That music thing is awesome. You can open it up in multiple windows and stack all of the music-y goodness together.

Edit: stacking them together doesn't really do as much as I'd thought at first, but it's still sort of useful for keeping everything organized.

How? They're like the least techinical band in Metal. I love the band, but they ain't noting like actual tech death, like Atheist, Necrophagist or Viraemia. You know, (sometimes unnecessarily) techy. Well yeah I guess if some of the other genres on there deserved a guernsey then I guess djent might as well be on there as well. How old is this thing, though? It's been getting heat around the place lately but it might've been around for a while. Djent as a non-obscure term is like, a year old, tops.

And Gojira? Not technical? Really? I mean, they don't fit perfectly in the genre, but they don't really fit in anything that well. They have elements of a lot of stuff.

EDIT: Actually I've got Gojira in my iTunes Library as "Progressive Death Metal" which makes a little bit more sense. I guess when you consider tech-death as something like Cryptopsy or Atheist, the comparison doesn't make any sense. I mean, they're technical, but not in the same way that a band like Atheist is.

I don't really understand why everyone is hating on the whole Facebook Cartoon character thing. Are we not supposed to bring about awareness on a subject unless it is guaranteed to succeed completely? I don't see why people would mock something that is intended to be nothing but good, and doesn't inconvenience anyone in any way. It is pretty mean-spirited to mock people for not liking that child abuse happens.

Well, one of my friends said something to the effect of "Gee, it's great that I can get a sense of self-satisfaction by doing this even though I'm not really doing anything at all!" and I can understand the viewpoint. I'm definitely not against it though, cause while it probably isn't helping much, it's definitely not hurting the cause.

I like it mostly cause it gives me an excuse to have my picture be Dag from Angry Beavers.

The thing that really gets to me are the people that are like "Oh, well I donated to a child abuse relief fund" "Oh, well you should do this instead, it is much more likely to work".

Go you. Way to not be the same as the people who are "just doing it for self-satisfaction", although you are doing just that.

And might I just say, would these naysayers be donating to a child abuse awareness fund or posting pictures of child abuse victims on any given day, had this trend not spread? I somehow doubt it.

I actually seem to recall reading an article discussing whether the increased viability of armchair activism (due to Facebook and Twitter and the like) had in fact resulted in a diminishing number of people contributing to actual activism- basically, the article generalized that people who might otherwise be contributing time or money to an actual effort are now clicking "like" on a Facebook page and being satisfied with their work- especially because their actions are so much more visible. Certainly this is an overgeneralization, and I can't remember if there were any actual statistics backing up the argument (which means there probably weren't), but for an issue such as child abuse I'd guess most people are already aware of the problem. Something like the 2008 Iran election crisis definitely benefited from the increased visibility on Twitter and Facebook but with this campaign there probably isn't anyone saying "Oh god, I just saw a cartoon character and now I know there are children being abused! I'd better donate to a cause!"

What it boils down to (as it seems to me) is everyone already knows most people are against beating kids, but now someone who might have donated $20 to the Children's Protection and Advocacy Coalition will now feel like they already did their part by changing their profile picture. If that's even just one person, the profile picture campaign had a net detrimental effect.

Personally, I don't really worry about it that much or even think that this li'l facebook thing is really breeding complacency. But I do think that people should perhaps learn to sack up a bit if they can't handle the suggestion that they could perhaps do more than sport charmander for a week if they really care about the issue.

In my view, the point was to inspire people to do just that; donate to a cause, talk to politicians, whatever. I didn't view it as a way for people to feel good about themselves BECAUSE they promoted awareness; I viewed it as actually promoting awareness and inspiring people to give to causes or do something else to help.

And Alex C, no. It isn't okay for someone to get all self-righteous when normally they would have done NOTHING. That is exactly what these self-righteous people who brag about how forward-thinking they are would have done had the Facebook cartoon trend not come about; NOTHING.

While you are absolutely right in thinking that people should not be bothered by the suggestion that they give more to a cause than simply spread knowledge about it, people ALSO need to remember that not everybody thinks the same way. Believe it or not, there are people who want to do good, but can't find the time or money to do so.

I was just reading a recent study on this yesterday. The study (full text available here) found that when people had made a decision they considered "ethical," they were able to justify later unethical decisions. The authors call it "compensatory ethics."
