And what is the actual reason why a virtuoso jazz musician is superior to a virtuoso rock or metal musician? That makes so little sense its astounding!

I imagine that the STYLE of music that you are a virtuso at makes a difference, since being a virtuso rock musician has different requirements than being a virtuso jazz musician.

But I don't listen to jazz, and I think I'm more into the "punk" school of music, so that means nothing to me anyway....

I dunno, Khar.  What I do know is that jazz drummers tend to kick the shit out of every other type of drummer.

Those samples kinda remind me of the music for transport tycoon. The second one in particular is quite impressive, but it seems really directionless, kind of an examplar of the criticism often levelled at metal virtuosity.

I'm just saying it seems pretty weak and boring compared to this.

I just youtubed Miles Davis, and he seems to have more promise, I will track down some more stuff.

I don't pretend to know anything about jazz. Pretty much the only things I listen to that have anything remotely to do with jazz whatsoever are Ephel Duath, Bohren and the Club of Gore and Coil's 'Horse Rotorvator'.

And none of those, as I'm sure you will know, are really jazz.

I don't know what's going on at any point in that video. It's more baffling than Yar's Revenge.

Murray Head makes not only the general locale and plot clear, but he also declares where he likes to get his kicks.

The two thirty second samples I heard, yes. They lacked energy, and they also lacked atmosphere. That leaves nothing but a mathematical arrangement of notes for me, and I have dyscalculia.

What else am I gonna judge him by? The samples on wikipedia, presumbably encoded by some fan who wanted to encapsulate two of his greatest and most iconic moments, left me colder than a polar bears cock, no way I'm buying an album, I've got a list of awesome shit I need as long as my arm. Maybe a download, but it still ain't a priority.

If I gave any musician in the world an honest chance, I'd never have the time to listen to all the music I actually like. If I look in to a musician and see nothing that interests me, why do I have to give them an honest chance? To satisfy your definition of musical taste? Fuck off.

Khar, his music is really something that takes longer than thirty seconds to impress, it has to build up to a crescendo to really amaze. This performance is what origanally got me to check him out; http://youtube.com/watch?v=q6WwuxqXPOg so i reccomend that if you want to give him a fair chance. Then again, you don't really have to, but I certainly didn't regret the seven minutes.

There's actually some pretty good moments in that, I agree, the crescendos are good, that kind of thing can actually sustain me through a song. If thats a common feature of this stuff, then thats good. I still thought the song didn't really get good until two minutes in, the piano was kind of shit at the start and the sax veered off somewhat at the end, but I'll admit, not a bad tune at all, it held my interest even though I still kind of felt it lacked some...something. Waaaay better than most of the bouncy upbeat jazz I've ever heard, which has always struck me as pretty shit.

Dream Theatre.  James Labrie can go fuck a snail or something.  I can't fucking stand his voice.  That being said, I don't mind their instrumental tracks as much, but I can't figure out why...

Dream Theater. They're Californian, not British. But I stand with you on that! James LaBrie should be fucking shot. And the rest of the band should be disbanded. They are all almost RIDICULOUSLY talented, technically speaking, yet they can't write one decent fucking song.

Anyway, that's not important. Sonata Arctica is a great band, and I can't stand them.

Thanks to wikipedia, we're both wrong. They're from Massachusetts.

I thought they formed at Berkley, not Berklee. One letter difference, completely different side of the continent. How do you like that shit?

The band formed at Berklee, but the 3 core members (Petrucci, Portnoy, and Myung) all grew up together in New York. So I suppose you could look at it either way.

I'll submit to your clearly superior knowledge of DT, as I only skimmed the top of that wiki. Man! If that's the case, they should have never gone to Berklee. Portnoy and Petrucci are a force by themselves, if either of them can take their hands out of their pants long enough to play a song.

You two are just too cool for school, I see.

What's wrong with Tool then? Is it the filler tracks? Let me take a stab at it. Oh, is Maynard not a good singer? Or maybe the lyrics are pretensious and - oh yes I've heard it before gasp - pseudo intellectual? The guitar is simple too, right? And they're commercial and fake, as well.

I would not go around making assumptions about whether or not people are Tool fans simply because they are making snide remarks in your direction. I am a massive Tool fan, its just in this thread I have absolutely no idea what the point you're trying to make is. I'm not sure what to think of you Nimrod, half your posts are reasonable, and at least a decent attempt at contributing and the other half are just painful shit.

I guess this may be considered a "trial run" trying to figure out how not to be ridiculed here or something, in which case, good luck.
